2 Basbanes, Nicholas A. AMONG THE GENTLY MAD: PERSPECTIVES AND STRATEGIES FOR THE BOOK HUNTER IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY.
New York Henry Holt 2002 0805051597 / 9780805051599 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
250 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(A) delightfully discursive twenty-first-century guide to book collecting that combines a fresh respect for proven methods of acquisition with sound advice on how to use the exciting electronic tools now available. Drawing on the superb insight he has gathered from some of the world's most notable collectors, dealers, and librarians, (the author) offers a penetrating consideration of the pastime as it enters an era in which 'everything', it seems, has become collectible, an era in which the computer has become an indispensable tool. For newcomers, this book presents the rare opportunity to look over the shoulders of accomplished book hunters, all with their own successful strategies, as they pursue their prey, to glean some invaluable tips from the pros. Along with conveying the thrill of the chase, their stories remind readers that good books bought shrewdly are 'always' wise inventments. Traditionalists who believe that preparation and knowledge remain the soundest foundations for success will not be disappointed by Basbane's contention that for all the wonders of the Internet, there is still no substitute for going out into the field, meeting up with kindred spirits at book fairs, open shops, auctions, and flea markets, and learning how to 'handle the goods' from people who have been there. At the same time, he questions the relevance of a few axioms that have been accepted as gospel, while explaining the timeless wisdom of others." Tiny bump at top of front hinge, tiny scuff at top edge of front board. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

He fell in love with the country, its people and customs, and stayed there until his death in 1946. McPherson was a born storyteller. In the letters he wrote home, from which this selection has been made, he not only itemised his own life but illumined the history of his time. In Cairo as a teacher, he used his long ho l i d a y s t o travel all over the Middle East and Asia Minor. The First World War found him first at Gallipoli, brilliantly describing the doomed campaign, and then later in the Sinai desert. 209 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0139594388 B&w drawings. "Gerald Bull was a gifted designer of military hardware who, early in his career, seemed destined for scientific stardom. At age twenty-two he was a doctor of aerophysics, the youngest doctoral graduate of the University of Toronto. On March 22, 1990, at the age of sixty-two, he was dead; gunned down at the door of his Brussels apartment by 'a person or persons not currently known to the authorit i e s ' , a ccording to Belgian police. His murder remains unsolved, although theories abound: Iraq, another Arab nation, the C.I.A., Canada, and Israel's dreaded Mossad. During the intervening forty years, Bull did pioneering work in artillery t ec hn ol og y, le ading to a two-decade-long relationship with the U.S. Department of Defense; developed a system for launching projectiles into space using a giant cannon; became an arms manufacturer and dealer; spent time in an American federal p ris on for vo ila t ing the Arms Export Control Act and the United Nations arms embargo against South Africa; and became involved in Iraq's Project Babylon, the so-called Super Gun. This latter endeavor probably cost him his life....(This book lo oks) at Bul l's fami ly bac kground, his friends and colleagues; (attempts) to explain the technology involved in his military developments; and to show the effects of his work on events in Canada and throughout the world." 8 Hensley, Joe L. A KILLING IN GOLD.
London Victor Gollancz 1979 0575026200 / 9780575026209 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
181 pp, 8"H. "Coin-collecting can be a dangerous hobby in the United States. One important collector has just been killed in a car crash. His niece, who inherits, takes her uncle's valuable collection to her lawyer, Donald Roback, and Roback, a collector himself, realises they are fakes. So when were the genuine coins switched, and by whom? And was the car crash genuinely an accident? When he asks that last question, Roback also begins to wonder whether other recent 'accidents' to collectors were quite what they seemed: one drowned, though a good swimmer; two burned to death in their home. Roback has another hobby: detection. And now he begins to investigate. There are one or two very nasty customers among the dealers: in particular, one Alvin Andred, whose place of business is a fortress, guarded not only by armoured doors and electronic eyes but also by vicious thugs with guns. But Roback most ingeniously outsmarts him; and Andred plans a horrifying revenge; and the action builds up to a cataclysmic climax. This is a fast-paced and very tense mystery, which challenges Roback's intelligence and endangers his life. As a bonus we learn a lot about the world of the numismatist. And the author is a judge, who draws upon his own legal experience as inspiration for his novels, and for their detail." Minor wrinkling and sun fading at top edge of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, a few very small discolored areas on rear flap.

(This) is the incredible story of one man, FBI informant Anthony Tait, who accomplished what law enforcement officials had believed was impossible - on a bet with two Alaska police officers for a steak dinner and a bottle of bourbon, he became the only person ever to infiltrate the Hells Angels organization. In Spain the wandering minstrel has had a long and honoured tradition ever since the Middle Ages when the 'juglar' wandered from castle to castle reciting the epic poems. A modern 'juglar' has to wear a tighter belt and a more ragged coat than in the golden days of long ago, but he may still get his eye full as well as his ear full, and as he saunters through the countryside his mind becomes enriched with many a golden sentence and tune." 496 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "The first full-scale biography of one of Britain's most important twentieth-century painters. Edward Burra never followed fashion: in the thirties, when modern art was dominated by abstraction and landscape, he painted people; in the sixites, when landscape was completely out of fashion, he started to find it interesting. His life was an unusual one: profoundly disabled, he lived with his parents, and was in constant pain. Only when he was painting could he forget his body. At the same time he was a man with a rich and full life. He was a letter-writer of genius, writing every afternoon to a wide circle of friends. His letters are camp, witty, full of the energy and delight in life which he could not express physically. Inventive, entertaining, and extraordinarily original, his writing expresses a man who combined profound personal loyalty with distaste for any kind of emotional grandstanding."
