Here instead are the works of unforgettable individuals: the blind poet Ghandl, the crippled master myth-spinner Skaay, the cagey old historian Kilxhawgins, and other Haida authors who speak with crystal clarity though they speak from a vanished time." Includes the following Appendices: Haida Spelling and Pronunciation; Haida as a Written Language; Spelling of Other Native American Languages; The Structure of Skaay's 'Raven Travelling'; Haida Village Names; A Short Pronouncing Glossary of Haida People and Places. 3 Charters, Dean. Introduction by Angela M. O'Connell. MOUNTIE, 1873-1973: A GOLDEN TREASURY OF THOSE EARLY YEARS.
Don Mills Collier-Macmillan 1973 029734207 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
253 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "1973 marks the centennial anniver- sary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. (This book is) a pictorial tour of adventure through those glorious early days. One hundred years is not long when we are talking about history, but a glance at these photographs shows the phenomenal growth of Canada during that period. And the man who laid the groundwork for this phenomenal growth was the Mountie. Without his work of pacification, the task of settling and civilizing the Canadian west could not have been carried out. The photographers who took these pictures must have been imbued with the same spirit of adventure that motivated the Mountie. The proof is here. Wherever the men of the N.W.M.P. went, the photographers followed. The results of their work are here, a fitting tribute to the men of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police." Tiny soft bump at top corner of pages 163 to end of book, previous owner's small label on front pastedown, very faint tiny foxing marks on bottom of text block, minor wrinking at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - moderate on rear flap-fold, several edge tears (some with creases) archivally taped, light rubbing

TWILIGHT OF TRUTH: CHAMBERLAIN, APPEASEMENT AND THE MANIPULATION OF THE PRESS., Cockett, Richard.
4 Cockett, Richard. TWILIGHT OF TRUTH: CHAMBERLAIN, APPEASEMENT AND THE MANIPULATION OF THE PRESS.
London Weidenfeld and Nicolson 1989 0297795481 / 9780297795483 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
229 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "(A) study of how the British Government manipulated the 'free' and 'independent' British press between 1937 and 1940. It tells the story of a hitherto neglected aspect of Neville Chamberlain's ill-fated search for a 'rapproachement' with Nazi Germany and Italy, namely his assiduous and largely successful attempts to curb the hostility of the British press towards the Fascist states and enlist the newspapers as active supporters in his policy of appeasement. Soon after coming to power in May 1937, Chamberlain learnt that Hitler regarded a 'tame' British press, free of adverse criticism of Germany, as an essential prerequisite to any agreement between Germany and Britain; and for the next three years Chamberlain and his entourage at Downing Street set out to comply with Hitler's wishes - aided and abetted by the press barons. Chamberlain used a system of personal contacts to curb the press, fully documented here for the first time, and he also relied heavily on the 'lobby' system of non-attributable political reporting to completely mislead the British people about the state of European affairs. (This book) throws new light on the role of some hitherto obscure members of Chamberlain's entourage, including his Press Secretary at Downing Street, George Steward, and Sir Joseph Ball, an ex-MI5 officer who ran the Conservative Research Department. At Chamberlain's behest, Ball ran a scurrilous, anti-semitic newspaper called 'Truth' to slander his political opponents and even members of his own Cabinet. The involvement of Lord Beaverbrook, the most famous of the contemporary press proprietors, is also fully revealed for the first time. Using original material from the Public Record Office and private archives, (it) exposes the way in which the peculiarly English customs and habits that governed relations between government and press became institutionalized in the 1930s to the permanent advantage of the government. (It) is thus a study of the system of government manipulation of the press - a system that exists to this day - as well as of Chamberlain and appeasement." Light browning to pages and edges of textblock, light wrinkling at top of spine, very light rubbing on boards. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

256 pp, large 8vo, (9 3/8" H). B&w maps, photographs. "History's overriding view of the Dieppe raid in 1942 is that of a catastrophic disaster, with thousands of Canadian and British troops killed or captured. Often overlooked is No 4 Commando's successful supporting element of the raid to disable the heavy German guns that threatened the supporting ships at sea. No 4 Commando's training and preparation for their part in the raid was an excellent example of operational planning, its leadership was superb and its luck held. Quite apart from this first use of Commando's, this raid was also the first instance in which US troops fired shots at their European enemy in WWII. Will Fowler has been able to interview surviving members of No 4 Commando, and with extensive research of official records has pieced together a terrific blow by blow account of one of the most daring early Commando raids of the Second World War." Light wrinkling at top of spine, remainder mark on bottom of textblock, two tiny soiling specks on fore-edge of textblock, very light browning to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds, minor remainder mark at bottom edge of panels/flaps.

THE STORY OF CANADIAN ROADS., Guillet, Edwin C.
13 Guillet, Edwin C. THE STORY OF CANADIAN ROADS.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1968 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
246 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps, drawings. "From portage trails snaking their way through the wilderness to superhighways carrying the raw materials and produce of an industrial nation, Canada's roads have had a romantic but long-neglected history. The problems which Canada has faced in seeking to connect two oceans by road would have been formidable even in a land more densely populated. Early builders found their way blocked by forest and swamp, rivers, rocks, vast areas of grassland, mountains, and muskeg. Their gradual success is recounted from the woodland trail cleared by Champlain in Acadia on through the early construction by corvee in New France; the Temiscouta Trail between the Atlantic Provinces and the Canadas; the infamous corduroy roads and bridges which jolted passengers unmercifully and lamed their horses; the plank roads, Canada's first contribution to road-building science; the cart tracks cut into the virgin prairies by Metis buffalo hunters; the Cariboo Road, build through sheer canyons and over mountain passes to the gold fields fo the Upper Fraser; and the vehicles which travelled these routes - the wonderul assortment of sleighs, caleches, buckboards, Red River carts, wagons, and stage-coaches of the nineteenth century. Then came the automobile, and with it an unprecedented personal mobility. Today Canada's roads are one of her principal resources. The Trans-Canada Highway, a dream for most of a century, has forged a new tie of asphalt and concrete, unifying the country." Dust jacket has very light edge wear, tiny dent on front hinge.

14 Hennessey, Thomas. A HISTORY OF NORTHERN IRELAND, 1920-1996.
New York St. Martin's Press 1997 0312211120 / 9780312211127 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
347 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H). Book club edition. "Founded upon the partition of Ireland in 1920, Northern Ireland experienced fifty years of nervous peace under the rule of a devolved government in Belfast. This government was representative only of the majority Protestant unionist community while the Catholic minority sought union with the rest of the island. The Protestant fortress held firm until the emergence of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Movement in the late 1960s, following which the province subsided into the civil unrest widely known as 'the Troubles'. Hennessey's even-handed history attempts to understand the reasons for the long history of communal division, mutual suspicion, Catholic alienation, and Protestant siege mentality. It traces the sequence of events, decade by decade, in the history of the troubled province. The great value of the book, however, is in providing an overview of events since the outbreak of the Troubles up to and including the present uncertain peace process. It is the first comprehensive history of Northern Ireland for over fifteen years and brings a contemporary perspective to historical events, taking account of the scholarship which has developed in Northern Ireland studies over the last twenty years." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, very light edge wrinkling.

THE VAGABOND FLEET: A CHRONICLE OF THE NORTH PACIFIC SEALING SCHOONER TRADE., Murray, Peter.
18 Murray, Peter. THE VAGABOND FLEET: A CHRONICLE OF THE NORTH PACIFIC SEALING SCHOONER TRADE.
Victoria, B.C. Sono Nis Press 1988 1550390007 / 9781550390001 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good Maurice Chadwick.
260 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers. Sepiatone photographs, colour ship portraits. "This gripping history of Canada's unknown seal hunt is a saga of greed and subterfuge, of bumbling diplomatic intrigue that almost led to war. At the same time it is the story of brave men who battled stormy seas in aging ships, many of which had seen better days. Countless lives were lost. Many of the victims were native Indians recruited with their canoes and spears from villages along the west coast of Vancouver Island. The effect of these tragedies on the Indian population and the economic impact of the fur seal hunt on their way of life is examined here for the first time. Threaded throughout the book are stories of the colourful characters who skippered and manned the sealing schooners. After years of acrimonious negotiations, a four-nation treaty was finally signed in 1911 which saved the fur seals from extinction. It was a landmark agreement in the conservation of marine life which set the pattern for a number of other international treaties over the years." Dust jacket has small wrinkle at top edge of rear flap, very light rubbing/soiling on rear panel.
