11 Cahill, Jack. WORDS OF WAR.
Toronto Deneau 1987 0888791461 / 9780888791467 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
246 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w map, photographs. "Jack Cahill, a senior reporter for 'The Toronto Star', was a one-man bureau in all parts of South East Asia. He witnessed the fall of Danang and was there when the Khmer Rouge conquered Cambodia. In what remains one of the most harrowing and human stories of that dramatic period, Cahill escaped from Saigon as one of the first 'boat people' aboard a decrepit refugee ship. 'Words of War' is populated with colourful characters, from the 19th century British and American newsmen, who covered wars in the Crimea, the Sudan, South Africa and America, to the modern day men and women who continue to risk their lives for a story in the age of telecommunications and computers. There are also courageous drivers, the officials, the bar girls, the veterans and the homeless children. In the end, there is only the bitter tragedy of war's victims. Cahill returned to Vietnam in 1986. He gives a haunting portrayal of that sad country today and the reactions of the first American veterans to meet their former enemies face to face since the war. (A) reporter's book, full of the frightening facts of war and the journalists who reported them first hand. It is a compelling, dramatic memoir of places and people that will never be forgotten." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of spine, very minor edge wear, minor browning on flaps, minor rubbing.

"In 1928, the year in which Alcan began its own journey, the fledgling company's prospects were not bright, and within four years they had dimmed still further thanks to the Great Depression's deadly stranglehold. Alcan had, however, some gilt-edged assets: its employees, men and women of talent, loyalty and above all industry, led by a team cast from the same mold and headed by that brilliant entrepreneur-scholar, Edward K. Davis. (This) is the story of these people and their company. Through a blend of skill, far sightedness, luck and plain hard work they made Alcan what it is today: a world leader in the aluminum industry. From its modest birth through its precarious infancy they nurtured its growth into the giant Canadian multinational enterprise now recognized around the world, thereby realizing that dream of a a global mission which had inspired its founders." Historically rich, geographically gorgeous, shaped by colourful characters and events, Cognashene's allure is as powerful today as it was for the first hardy souls to arrive at its scenic shores. (This book) celebrates the uniquely Canadian island community and traces its dramatic journey from its native roots, through its industrial development to its days of pioneer settlement. In these pages you'll meet Champlain and his young protege, Etienne Brule. You'll find out what it took to be a success - or a failure! - in the lumber days. You can settle in for a visit at Longuissa, Whalen's or Blarney Castle, or, if it's Sunday - and you're so inclined - stop by the Church on the Rocks. And you'll discover throughout the breathtaking beauty that has captivated countless artists, including A.Y. Jackson and other members of the Group of Seven. Part historical document, part warm-hearted slice-of-cottage-life, (it) reveals a distinctive and winning personality. It is, quite simply, the essence of Cognashene."
