PUBLIC SERVANT, SECRET AGENT: THE ELUSIVE LIFE AND VIOLENT DEATH OF AIREY NEAVE., Routledge, Paul.
15 Routledge, Paul. PUBLIC SERVANT, SECRET AGENT: THE ELUSIVE LIFE AND VIOLENT DEATH OF AIREY NEAVE.
London Fourth Estate 2002 1841552447 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
392 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "On 30 March 1979 for the first time in more than 100 years an MP was killed in the precincts of the House of Commons. And his was a very violent death: a bomb, triggered by the ascent of his car up the ramp from the underground car park, detonated enough explosives to sever his legs from his body and render him unrecognisable. Airey Neave was a loyal Tory backbencher who had last held ministerial office in 1959. What, then, had he done to deserve such a vicious and bloody attack? Neave was an extraordinary man. Eton and Oxford educated, he served in the Royal Artillery and was captured and ultimately imprisoned in Colditz. He became the first Briton to escape. On the strength of his experience he was recruited by the security services to a divison of MI6 and was an advisor on escape and insurrection in occupied Europe until the end of the second world war. (After his work at the Nuremberg trials he) moved into open politics, as MP for Abingdon from 1953, without ever losing his taste for the covert. A shadowy figure on the right of the Conservative party, he ploted the overthrow of Ted Heath and the installation of Margaret Thatcher. (When Neave asked Thatcher for Northern Ireland, the) intelligence services found they had one of their men in a pivotal role at a crucial moment. To Irish Nationalists, Neave was a threat that could not be allowed to thrive. His life and death were enacted in the deep shadows just behind the glare of public life." Slight lean to spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny edge tear on page leaf 259/260, slight toning to edged of text block, tiny white stains on fore-edge of rear board. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, minor rubbing, moderate wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds - light wrinkling elsewhere.

203 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1853101664 B&w photographs. "There are few airbases that do not possess a gate guard - an old aircraft, usually positioned near the gate of the base and 'up a pole' in an attempt to portray the normal flying attitude of the aircraft. Enthusiasts in the United Kingdom are particularly lucky that the RAF has such a positive attitude towards the preservation and maintenance of the often historic aircraft in its care. Ranging from WWII f ighters and bombers - Spitfires, Hurricanes, Shackletons and Lancasters - to more recent sophisticated jet aircraft such as the English Electric Lighning, Jaguar and Phantom; these aircraft represent a living piece of RAF history." JULIE ANDREWS: A LIFE ON STAGE AND SCREEN., Windeler, Robert.
17 Windeler, Robert. JULIE ANDREWS: A LIFE ON STAGE AND SCREEN.
Birch Lane / Carol Publishing, Secaucus, N.J., 1997.
262 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1559723912 B&w photographs. "Since her professional singing debut at the London Hippodrome in 1947 - at the age of twelve - Julie Andrews has been a star. In the half century since th ose last days of British vaudeville, through her smash Broadway comeback in 'Victor/Victoria', she has triumphed on stage, in the movies, and on television. At thirteen, Julie gave a command performance for the Queen of England, at nineteen she b e c ame a Broadway star in 'The Boy Friend', and she became a theatrical legend before she was twenty-one, as Elize Doolittle in 'My Fair Lady'. By the time she was thirty-one, Julie was the best-paid and most beloved actress in the world, with a n Ac ad emy Award for her first movie, 'Mary Poppins', and an international box-office championship with her third movie, 'The Sound of Music'. Her remarkable body of work up to this point stamped her with an indelible image she came to resent: who le som e, innocent, the nanny next door. Worse, at the peak of her enormous success, Andrews was unhappy enough to submit to daily psychotherapy. Her first marriage, to childhood sweetheart Tony Walton, broke down. After two flop movie musicals, 'St ar!' an d 'Darling Lili', the press and the public seemed to turn on her. Julie became box-office poison in Hollywood but even in her semiexile starred in critically successful, Emmy-winning television variety series, wrote two children's book s, a nd pe rfor med live....Here at last is the whole sixty-two-year life story of Julie Andrews - her meteoric rise, her devastating fall, and her incredible comeback, from the little English girl with the freak four-octave, crystalline voice to th e sur prisin g leg end who has outlasted her critics. Rober Windeler's affectionate and insightful biography reveals the full-blooded woman behind the high and low notes." Small soft bump at top corner of pages 35 to 50, minor wrinkling at bottom of spi ne, sma ll wat er mark and tiny stain on rear board. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing, tiny stain on inside rear panel. Very GoodVery Good+

18 Young, Ron. THE COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO SHIPWRECKS OF THE NORTH EAST COAST. VOLUME ONE (1740-1917).
Stroud, Gloucestershire Tempus 2000 0752417495 / 9780752417493 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good+
224 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, silhouettes, maps. "Sailors and adventurers have always known that every voyage at sea, whether short or long, is fraught with danger. Violent storms can wreck the most sturdy of ships or they can be attacked by pirates, enemy fire or be blown up by a mine. Many vessels have succumbed to the treacherous waters around the British coast, after a safe journey, only to be wrecked at the mouth of the harbour, with the loss of valuable cargoes, passengers and crew. In this comprehensive volume, covering the period from 1740 to 1917, Ron Young, an experienced diver of many years, catalogues the histories of the ships that have been stranded and wrecked along the north-east coast of England, from Whitby to Berwick-upon-Tweed. He records the bravery of the lifeboat crews that have risked their lives to rescue the survivors, including the heroic Grace Darling and the SS Forfarshire, as well as assessing the potential of the wrecks as dive-sites." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - slight waviness to edges of book, small soft crease at top corner of rear cover.
