482 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "The years between the early 1850s and the late 1920s marked a turbulent and significant era for Russia. During that time the country underwent a massive transformation, taking it from days of grandeur under the tsars to the chaos of revolution and the beginnings of the Soviet Union. At the center of this tumult were four women of the Romanov dynasty. Marie Alexandrovna and Olga Constantinovna were born into the family, Russian grand duchesses at birth. Marie Feodorovna and Marie Pavlovna married into the dynasty: the former born a princess of Denmark, the latter a duchess of the German duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. These Romanov women, distinguished in varying degrees by their beauty and elegance, their wealth and power, savored a life of privilege and unsurpassed luxury. Marie Alexandrovna, Tsar Alexander II's pampered daughter, astonished her mother-in-law, Queen Victoria, with her strength of character. Thrust into the role of queen at age sixteen, Olga Constaninovna's altruistic streak benefited Greeks and Russians alike. Charming and vivacious, Marie Feodorovna, the mother of the ill-fated Tsar Nicholas II, excelled in her role as empress. Formidable and ambitious, Marie Pavlovna emerged as a rival to Tsarina Alexandra, Nicholas II's embattled consort. (This book) presents the unforgettable political and personal dramas of these extraordinary women. What began for them as a time of splendor ended after World War I with Russia destroyed by revolution." Small soft bump to top corner of pages 367 to 436, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - two tiny tears at top, one very small corner bump. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, soft crease down front hinge area, light edge wrinkling - maily at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

"This is the first comprehensive account of every peacetime submarine disaster from 1774 to the present day. It is, however, very far from being just a list of what sunk, where, when and why, for the author examines most of the important sinkings in considerable detail, analysing what went wrong and describing the attempts made at rescuing the crew and/or the vessel. In this way he traces t he development of the submarine from the earliest experimental submersibles of the late eighteenth century down to the nuclear-powered monsters of today, describing in parallel the developments of underwater rescue operations and survival tec h n i q u e s ....The appendices include the most comprehensive and accurate list of submarine disasters ever printed, updated to June 1985, in the compilation of which the author has had the co-operation of the US, French, Italian, Danish and Japan es e Na vi es , as well as that of the RN Submarine Museum and the German 'U-Boot Archiv'." 7 Heckert, Eleanor Louise. MUSCAVADO.
Doubleday, Garden City, New York, 1968.
348 pp, 8vo (8 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. "In the old Danish Virgin Islands, around the turn of the Eighteenth Century, the gulf between white plantation owner and black slave was wide and deep. Brutality on the part of th e one engendered hatred and fear in the other - and finally, a burning desire for vengeance. The night of Prince's birth, in a slave hut at Fortuna plantation, a terrible hope and a prophecy were born with him. As this exciting historical n o v e l u n folds, the fulfillment of those auguries touched many lives in many different ways. Based in part on actual people and events, 'Muscavado' is steeped in the lore and romance of the Virgin Islands of Denmark. It is a tale of forbidd e n lo ve b et w ee n the daughter of a white planation owner and a mulatto slave, where discovery meant death for both. It is the story of a desperate struggle for freedom and its savage consequences. Above all, it is the story of the workings o f a sin ist er voo do o p ro phecy and its legacy of passion, violence, terror, and despair. Today, Fortuna plantation, where Prince toiled in the cane fields, is a crumbled ruin, overgrown with thornbush. The gravestone of the woman he loved is e ro di ng a way, an d ti me has tra nsformed the violent past into an unforgettable legend. Here is a first-rate historical romance, carefully researched, giving a memorable picture of a vanished way of life." 396 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "(In 1943, anticipating) that the German occupying powers would soon issue the long-feared order to round up the entire population of Jews for deportation to concentration camps, the Danish people stood up in defiance and resisted. The king, politicians, and ordinary civilians were united in their response - these treatened people were not simply Jews but fellow Danes who happened to be Jewish, and no one would help in rounding them up for confinement and deporation. Over fourteen harrowing days, as they were helped, hidden, and protected by ordinary people who spontaneously rushed to save their fellow citizens, an incredible 7,742 out of 8,200 Jewish refugees were smuggled out all along the coast - on ships, schooners, fishing boats, anything that floated - to Sweden. Unfolding on a day-to-day basis, 'Countrymen' brings together accounts written by individuals and officials as events happened, offering a comprehensive overview that underlines occupied Denmark's historical importance to Hitler as a prop for a model Nazi state and revealing the savage conflict among top Nazi brass for control of the country." 19 Wylie, Jonathan and Margolin, David. Foreword by Einar Haugen. THE RING OF DANCERS: IMAGES OF FAROESE CULTURE.
Philadelphia University of Pennsylvania Press 1981 081227783X / 9780812277838 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
182 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. "Scattered in the North Atlantic, 300 miles off Iceland and 400 miles off Norway lies an archipelago - the Faroe Islands. Despite centuries of foreign control, the Faroese have preserved their own distinctive identity. At present an internally self-governing dependency of Denmark, the Faroes have kept their culture alive in part by elaborating certain elements of that culture as badges of self-consciousness. (This book) is composed of a series of studies of aspects of Faroese life, language, and folkways. A recurrent theme is the continuing reformulation of Faroese culture since the islands' Viking settlement in the ninth century. The Faroes are introduced as the Faroese themselves conceive them - as islands both joined and separated by the waterways round about them. The archipelago is visualized in terms of such waterways as fjords, the points of the compass, 'home' villages, and natural and political districts. The authors also discuss Faroese society as the Faroese conceived it around 1890, by an analysis of a then popular folktale about the Ashlad. Placed in its social context, the tale appears as a kind of folk editorial on changing values and changing times. Perhaps the most important symbol of Faroese identity is the Faroese language. Although it was not made a written language until the 1840s, and ws not widely written or read until the 1890s, Faroese replaced Danish as the islands' official language. In gaining its formal register, it has come to express a modern sense of what it means to be Faroese. The most spectacular Faroese custom, the grindadrap - the slaughter of schools of pilot whatles and the celebration that follows the catch - typifies the continuity of the Faroes' anciently rooted identity. The image of the dansiringur - the 'ring' of dancers singing ballads of wars and loves of heroic times - lingers throughout the book. The dansiringur, the authors contend, represents the Faroese adaptation of large forms to a land of closely known neighbors and landscapes, the complex inward turning of the Faroese culture, its tortuous sense of wholeness. The book ends by recounting interviews in Torshavn, the Faroes' capital, with an artist, a journalist, a politician, and others. (It) vividly portrays the Faroese and makes clear why they are actively involved in preserving their culture as well as shaping it for the future." Light wear at corners and top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light fading to spine, several closed tears up to 3" - some with creases, light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
