204 pp, 8 5/8" H, soft cover. ISBN 1853103969 B&w photographs. "Alan Cooper writes about an operation which at the time and ever since has captured the imagination of the world - the attack on the German dams in May 1943. This forms a deeply-res earched history of one of the most successful operations of the Second World War carried out by the famous 617 Squadron led by Guy Gibson. This account includes the whole lead up to the final mission; the development of the bouncing bomb, the f o r m i ng of 617 Squadron and the intense course of training carried out to make the operation a success. The raid itself is viewed from both British and German camps; many of the aircrew who took part in 617 operations give their accounts, as d o se ve ra l Germans, including Albert Speer, the Armaments Minister. All in all, the book recreates the excitement and aura of danger and uncertainty which surrounded the dam busters' mission, giving the reader the full story of one of the great es t epi sod es of the war." "Marsland Gander is a man who has 'been places and seen things', things which he records in this autobiography of a successful journalist with all the vigour and humour of a great adventure. Born and brought up in London's East End, the future War Correspondent and Radio Critic started his career on a local paper and worked his way up. Since those early days he has visited more than thirty countries and met many famous men and women. His assignments have given him an 'inside slant' on some of the biggest stories of recent times, and in several instances he is now able to disclose information which was hitherto suppressed by the censor. (He) witnessed the much criticised campaign in Southern France, the sensational capture of Leros, the Airborne drop across the Rhine and the liberation of Rome, Athens and Amster-dam. Since the war he has toured America from coast to coast and has much to say of recent radio and television developments. There are personal anecdotes of President Truman, the Pope, Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, George Lansbury, of famous soldiers like Montgomery and Alexander, and many others." From the dust jacket of 'The Bombay Marines': "Newly returned from a successful assignment to rid the Arabian Se a of pirates, Captain Adam Horne of the frigate 'Eclipse' is summoned to the presence of his commading officer, Commodore Watson, head of the East India Company's private fighting unit, the much derided Bombay Marines. It is 1761, and Pond i c h e r r y , last stronghold of the French in the Indian subcontinent, has just fallen to the British. Now Captain Horne is given a strange and secret mission: to capture the defeated French commander Thomas Lally, from his prison at Fort St. G eo rg e in M ad ra s - or the unit will be disbanded for failure. Due to the deployment of most of the Marines on the east coast of India, Horne's force is seriously undermanned. He is left with only one choice: to take his pick of the motley co lle cti on of th iev es, r ap ists and murderers held in the prisons of Bombay Castle and subject them to intensive training for the most closely guarded campaign of the Seven Years' War. Drawing on a wealth of historical characters and events, and on l itt le-s tudi ed d ocum ent s o f the East India Company's early history, the action moves from sea to land, from the colourful waterfront of Bombay to the sadistic penal colony of Bull Island and the final, cataclysmic denouement within th e wa lls o f Fo rt St . Geo rge. In C apta in A dam Horne Porter Hill has created a character as vivid as Hornblower and Ramage, a man who has rejected the prestige of service in the Royal Navy or the East India Company's Maritime Service for the d ashin g, dar e-dev il lif e of h istor y's fi rst c omman do-style unit, operating amid the exotic dangers of Britain's most coveted oriental territories...." "If the people of Quebec claim a right to sovereignty, Inuit of Quebec argue that their right of self-determination empowers them with the choice to remain part of Quebec, of Canada, or to secede on their own. The James Bay Cree consider Hydro Quebec's 'mad plans to engineer and dam the vast ecosystem' where they have lived for centuries an affront to their own right to control their land. The Labrador Innu are struggling with both the federal and provincial governments to protect their traditional hunting territories from threats imposed by military training flights and mineral exploration. All of these are challenges. As the Native peoples of Canada are meeting t h e m , asserting their right to make choices for themselves, they stand steadfastly 'on the land' from which flow their inherent rights to self-determination." FORTRESS EUROPE., Rolf, Rudi and Saal, Peter.
15 Rolf, Rudi and Saal, Peter. FORTRESS EUROPE.
Shrewsbury Airlife 1988 1853100323 / 9781853100321 First English Edition Soft Cover Very Good
166 pp, 9 5/8" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, plans. "The German capture of the supposedly impregnable Belgian fortress of Eben-Emael in May 1940 shocked the world, while the vaunted Maginot Line proved useless against an enemy who virtually ignored and bypassed it. As always, military planners had designed for the last rather than for the next war, ignoring the advances in tank and aircraft technology which had revolutionised warfare. Even the Germans fell into the same trap, building the Atlantic Wall and the Channel Island defences against invasion from the sea and the West Wall (the so-called 'Siegfried Line') against any possible invasion of Germany itself from the west. As a result, throughout the 1930s and '40s Western Europe was covered by deeply dug-in bunkers, artillery, machine-guns and anti-aircraft emplacements, observation and fire direction towers, underground magazines and other fortifications, a vast number of which survive to this day due either to their inherent strength or the work of preservation enthusiasts. This book explores the history of modern fortifications from the 1870s, showing how designs changed radically to meet new threats, particularly in the form of artillery. It shows how some of the major forts fared in battle in both World Wars, and with the aid of dozens of clear maps and photographs, provides a detailed travel-guide for everyone wishing to explore their frequently well-preserved remains. Most are open to the public and many house museums, so opening times are also included. These defensive lines and positions, fashioned from steel and concrete, have stood idle now for over forty years yet still exercise a tremen-dous pull on the imagination. This book will thus be invaluable not only to students of fortifications but also to anyone touring France, Holland, Belgium, Germany or the Channel Islands." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, minor rubbing, a few minor creases on front cover.

370 pp, 381 pp, 396 pp, large 8vos (9 1/4" H) - 3 volume set. Volume 1 published 1968, volumes 2 & 3 1969. B&w photographs, maps. "General Andrew George Latta McNaughton, P.C., C.H., C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O., was a patriot who served his country diligently as scientist, inventor, soldier and stateman for more than half a century. His full-time military career began with his enlistment in the Canadian Field Artillery, where his skill and ingenuity as a gunner earned him, by the war's end, the rank of brigadier-general and command of the Canadian Corps Heavy Artillery. His interest in science resulted in the invention of the cathode ray direction finder - the direct forerunner of radar - in 1923. (Volume 2) describes McNaughton's career in the Second World War from his appointment as Inspector General of the troops mobilizing to form the 1st Canadian Division until the end of 1943, when he was removed from command of the First Canadian Army. McNaughton had antagonized (General Sir Alan) Brooke by his unceasing fight for Canadian autonomy. (Canadian Defence Minister) Ralston undermined his position by detaching a corps and sending it to Italy. With that policy established, McNaughton said, it would be better for Ralston to put someone in charge who believed in it; he himself did not. Nor could McNaughton have served under Montgomery after the latter, in highhanded fashion, had refused McNaughton access to his own troops in Sicily. 19 Weeks, Verna Mae. ERINDALE: THE PRETTY LITTLE VILLAGE.
Mississauga, Ontario Verna Mae Weeks 1999 096913018X / 9780969130185 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
245 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, map. "Springfield (Erindale) was described in the 1877 Atlas of Peel as 'the pretty little village'. A century ago, the Toronto Mail and Empire stated that few people in Canada were aware of the lovely views, the pretty homes, and fruitful orchards on the banks of the Credit in the vicinity of Springfield; that there was no other more charming spot to be found in this country, or indeed in any country. It had a Town Hall with a bell on it which was rung at ten o'clock of an evening; and its people lived for many years in peace with the native people of the Indian Village downriver. For fifty years a beautiful lake, formed by the building of a great and powerful dam which transmitted electricity not only to the village but to West Toronto, formed a picturesque setting for Erindale's Village Green. Erindale had Miles Park where all sorts of jungle animals, gentle donkeys and iridescent peacocks roamed in their own enclosures, and a small black bear ran freely around the grounds accepting ice cream treats from children. Today, the most unchaged part of the City of Mississauga is the place where the road comes down Maple Hill to the corner of Dundas Street and Mississauga Road; here, the red schoolhouse, the church, Ross's Hill, the grey shale banks of the river, and the spring below Dundas - each of them can still be seen." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.
