6 Beetles, Chris. With contributions from Rodney Dale and David Wootton. LOUIS WAIN'S CATS.
Cambridge Worth Press 2011 1849310262 / 9781849310260 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Louis Wain.
256 pp, square small 10to (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions of Wain's art. "During their heyday, in the time before the First World War, Louis Wain's cats, dressed as humans, portrayed (the) stylish Edwardian world having fun; at restaurants and tea parties, going to the Races and the Seaside, celebrating Christmas and Birthdays, and disporting themselves with exuberant games of tennis, bowls, cricket and football. This is a titillating world of cats at play, uninhibited and slightly dangerous, with most group activities likely to turn into mishap, mayhem and catastrophe. This is Wain's world, funny, edgy and animated; a whole cat world. The first comprehensive exhibition of Wain's work was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1972 and, since then, Louis Wain has steadily become more fashionable and collected worldwide. This new biography will show many images for the first time ever, amongst 300 plates of richness and variety, all of which are reproduced faithfully from the original artwork." Dust jacket has tiny wrinkles at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few slight wrinkles on front flap

"Gerald Bull was a gifted designer of military hardware who, early in his career, seemed destined for scientific stardom. At age twenty-two he was a doctor of aerophysics, the youngest doctoral graduate of the University of Toronto. On March 22, 1990, at the age of sixty-two, he was dead; gunned down at the door of his Brussels apartment by 'a person or persons not currently known to the authorit i e s ' , a ccording to Belgian police. His murder remains unsolved, although theories abound: Iraq, another Arab nation, the C.I.A., Canada, and Israel's dreaded Mossad. During the intervening forty years, Bull did pioneering work in artillery t ec hn ol og y, le ading to a two-decade-long relationship with the U.S. Department of Defense; developed a system for launching projectiles into space using a giant cannon; became an arms manufacturer and dealer; spent time in an American federal p ris on for vo ila t ing the Arms Export Control Act and the United Nations arms embargo against South Africa; and became involved in Iraq's Project Babylon, the so-called Super Gun. This latter endeavor probably cost him his life....(This book lo oks) at Bul l's fami ly bac kground, his friends and colleagues; (attempts) to explain the technology involved in his military developments; and to show the effects of his work on events in Canada and throughout the world." In fact, his talent was far more than he admitted, and his sense of design was natural and keen. (This book) explores Tolkien's art at length, from his childhood paintings and drawings to his final sketches. At its heart are his illustrations for his books, especially his tales of Middle-earth. Also examined are the pictures Tolkien made for his children, his expressive calligraphy, his love of decoration, and his contributions to the typography and design of his books. With 200 reproductions, many in full colour, this lavishly-produced book offers a perfect opportunity for anyone wishing to discover a largely unexplored aspect of J.R.R. Tolkien's character." Montreal McGill - Queen's University Press 1978 0773502998 / 9780773502994 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
282 pp, 9 1/4" H. Tables, map. "From the letters and fragmentary accounts of Robert Dugard of Rouen, Professor Miquelon has brought to life the history of an eighteenth-century trading company. Robert Dugard and his associates were men who came of age at the right moment to capitalize on the political and financial stability of France during the thirty years after Utrecht, and on the widening opportunities of colonial trade. Their Societe du Canada was founded in 1729 to handle the Quebec trade, but soon they were also testing the sugar island trade. By 1742 their business with the West Indies was more profitable than their Canadian trade. But catastrophe trod upon the heels of success: between 1744 and 1748 most of their fleet was lost to shipwreck and war. Of the three remaining ships one was broken up, another relegated to the fishery, and the third given over to sugar hauling. At Quebec, Dugard's factors, Havy and Lefebvre, had remained and prospered in the fur trade, Labrador sealing, and the trade with France. Professor Miquelon describes their activities, which continued until their business was completely destroyed by the Conquest of Canada." Bump to top of spine, three corners have tiny or small bump. Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
