THE WASHINGTON STING., Conconi, Charles and House, Toni.
1 Conconi, Charles and House, Toni. THE WASHINGTON STING.
Coward, McCann & Geoghegan, New York, 1979, second impression.
255 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Here is the dramatic and only inside account of the undercover police-FBI fencing operation - featuring cops in the guise of syndicate soldiers - whose stunning success put the 'Washington Sting' in headlines across the nation. Word was out on the street in Washington, D.C., that one of the best fences in years was working out of a warehouse on 25th Place, NE. PFF Inc., run by 'mob-connected' Italians, was buyi n g u p s t o len guns, office equipment, anything with resale value. Thieves all over the Washington area were soon submitting to the hard dealing of the gun-wielding Mafiosi, looking for quick cash and an association with the mighty aristocracy o f c ri me . As t he fence's main man, Pasquale Larocca, critically examined the typewriter or rifle offered across his bulletproof counter, and in one corner Mike Franzino cradled his shotgun in casual warning, there was no suspicion of a weapo n d ea dl y i n a d i ffe ren t way: a videotape machine which recorded every transaction from behind an unnoticed one-way mirror. 'Pasquale Larocca' and 'Mike Franzino' were the aliases of two of the undercover team of police and FBI men organize d to fi ght Was hing ton 's hig h la rceny statistics down at the underworld source. And five months after the opening of 'Police-FBI Fencing, Incognito' - five months of tense bargaining with suspicious professionals and comic encounters with f awnin g fl unki es an d pro stit ute s - t he fe nce closed around more than 200 criminals invited to meet a New York 'Don' at a party hosted by Larocca. They met, instead, with police. The single account of the caper written with the cooperation of the poli ce an d FBI and wi th fu ll a ccess to the incriminating videotapes, here is a true story of police politics and mayhem, streetwise ingenuity and volatile temperaments, told to authentic narrative effect with complete, uncensored detai l." Ve ry lig ht bro wning to edge s of t extbl ock, l ight wr inkling at top of spine, minor rubbing. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, slight fading to spine color, very light browning on flap-folds and edges of rear panel, minor s oiling. Very G ood/Ver y Good -

Are the weather conditions the cause of the catastrophe to come or does the blame rest with..." A few very faint water splashes to boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, book has slight lean. 6 Hayes, David. THE LOST SQUADRON.
Toronto Bloomsbury / Madison Press 1994 0747518262 / 9780747518266 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Lou Sapienza, Cornelius Braun, David Kaufman, photography. William S. Phillips, Craig Kodera, aviation art.
223 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, maps, reproductions. "The real-life quest to free WWII planes (6 P-38 Lightnings and 2 B-17 Flying Fortress bombers), entombed within a Greenland glacier. They had become an Arctic legend. Tales of an entire squadron of war-birds from 1942 still sitting on the ice in Greenland were passed from one pilot to another. On a jaunt to the far north in 1980, two pilots from Atlanta, Georgia, heard the story and decided to look for the lost planes. What began as casual curiosity soon became a twelve-year adventure and a multimillion-dollar obsession. Here is the gripping, true story of how perseverance triumphed over seemingly impossible odds in pursuit of a dream." Slight bump at top of spine, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has wrinkling and tiny tear at top of spine - archivally taped, minor edge wrinkling, very light rubbing.

"The SR-71 Blackbirds was retired on January 26, 1990, as the world's fastest, highest flying aircraft and then came out of retirement on March 6, 1990, to break its own records, flying the 2,404.5 miles from Los Angeles to Washington DC in 68 minutes and 17 seconds - an average of 2112.52 mph! CANADAIR: THE FIRST 50 YEARS., Pickler, Ron and Milberry, Larry. Foreword by Robert E. Brown.
11 Pickler, Ron and Milberry, Larry. Foreword by Robert E. Brown. CANADAIR: THE FIRST 50 YEARS.
CANAV, Toronto, 1995.
392 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0921022077 "(T)ells the story of a company that started as a 'bucket shop' producing aircraft designed by other manufacturers and ended as a world leader in the design and manufacture of bus iness jets and re gional airliners. (The book) goes back to the company's roots. In the 1920s its predecessor, Canadian Vickers, built some of Canada's first bush planes. Then comes the Second World War, when Canso patrol planes were built u n d e r licence. At war's end, a group of entrepreneurs took over the plant just as production dropped to zero. They formed Canadair, which cornered the market on reconditioned C-47s (DC-3s), while developing the North Star, Canada's first mod er n ai rl in e r. In 1947 Canadai r was purchased by an American firm, the Electric Boat Company. This brought Canadair into the jet age with the mass productin of fighters and trainers, and gave Electric Boat the revenue needed to form General D yna mi cs. T he bo ok tells how unfortu nate timing prevented two innovative products, the CL-44 and the CL-84, from possibly thrusting Canadair into the ranks of the major international aircraft manufacturers. It describes, too, how the terminat ion of mili tary pr ogr ams like the F-104 fo rced Canadair to diversify into new fields. This led to two successful programs, the CL-215 waterbomber and the CL-89 surveillance drone. The threat of plant closure during the recession of the early 1970 s p rompt ed Ot tawa to buy Canadair. So bega n (its) most controversial era, that of the Challenger business jets. From early excitement and optimism, through delays, disappointments, criticism and eventual government bail-out, to worldwide accl aim, the d etails are all here. The final chapte rs describe the exciting developments at Canadair since the acquisition by Bombardier and outline its strategy for a bright future. Besides detailed text and hundreds of photos, (the book) i nclude s an appendi x with three -vie ws, lists of products, s tudies, first flights, awards, etc. - more than enough data to satisfy the most demanding aviation 'buff'." Very small bump to bottom corner of both boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkli ng at bottom of flap -folds . Ve ry Good+/Near Fine

14 Wagner, William. Foreword by Benjamin F. Schemmer. LIGHTNING BUGS AND OTHER RECONNAISSANCE DRONES.
Armed Forces Journal International / Aero, Fallbrook, CA, 1982, book club edition.
222 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "In the early 1960s technicians took the pilot out of the plane's cockpit, put him on the ground at an electronic black box and had him 'fly' spy missions by remotely cont rolling an pilotless jet airplane. Because of this advanced technique, formerly dangerous intelligence-gathering flights in hostile areas were possible without risking the lives of pilots or the loss of extremely costly manned aircraft. This t h e n is the story of 'Lightning Bugs' and other Ryan reconnaissance drones and the contributions they made in combat in Southeast Asia." There are inconsistencies in the page numbering and with reference to the table of contents, but all text pages and illustrations are present. The front free endpaper has been removed and the textblock begins with the frontispiece of Andrew Jackson (after J. Wood) facing an engraved preliminary title page. These are divided by the remains of a protective tissue with about 1/3 now missing. The full title page (with a previous owner's name in pencil at the top) and text follow. Contents: Advertisement; Biography of General Jackson By Robt. Walsh Jr. Esqr.; Remarks of the Publisher; Continuation of the Biography By Dr. James M'Henry; A Dirge, to the Memory of Mrs. Jackson, ibid; Description of the Capitol of Washington. The illustrations consist of the frontispiece portrait, the engraved title page, The Golden Wreath (printed on a coated paper that is now somewhat crazed and discoloured), 3 plates (The Battle of New Orleans, The Hermitage & The Capitol - with protective tissues), 3 pages of musical notation (Jackson's March & Quick Step - with protective tissues) and a brightly coloured map (19" W x 16 1/2" H) of the "United States of North America" "Published for the Jackson Wreath" and showing the United States reaching to Louisiana and the Arkansas and Oregon Territories. In general, the book is sound and except for the front free endpaper, complete, but has considerable browning/foxing (particularly noticeable on the tissues) and marks from where plants (ferns, leaves, etc.) have been pressed in the past. The map is in very good condition, the coloring is bright, although there is some creasing & small tears at the edges and a few areas of discoloration. The blank page preceding the rear free endpaper is missing the top corner (approx. 2 1/4" x 4 3/4") and there are a few pencil & ink notations on the blank pages. Light waviness and darkening to edges of text block, moderate edge wear to boards and leather - heavier at top/bottom of spine, rubbing to marbled paper-covered boards.
