"A Regiment forms a corporate body which takes on a life of its own, often rising above the weaknesses and inadequacies of its human fabric to perform seemingly superhuma n deeds such as the 'Immortal Stand' of the 24th Foot at Rorke's Drift during the Zulu War...Since their birth as Dering's Regiment in March 1689, the 24th (which in 1881 became the South Wales Borderers) have participated in nearly all th e l a r g e a n d small wars of the past 279 years from Cartagena in South America to Narvik in Arctic Norway. From Saratoga, in America's war of Independence, to Tsingtao in the Far East, where they gained a battle honour unique in the British A rm y . T he I st Ba tt alion, over which the shadow of amalgamation now lies, has recently returned from an operational tour of Aden. London Pimlico 2004 0712669426 / 9780712669429 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
344 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, drawings, maps. "The chariot changed the face of ancient warfare. First in West Asia and Egypt, then in India and China, charioteers came to dominate the battlefield. In 1274 B.C. at Kadesh in present-day Syria - where the untried pharoah Ramesses II was nearly defeated by the Hittites - some 5,000 chariots were deployed in battle. Its use as a war machine is grapically recounted in Indian epics and Chinese chronicles. Homer's Illiad tells of the attack on Troy by Greek heroes who rode in chariots. In 325 B.C. Alexander the Great faced charioteers in northern India, while in 55 B.C., on a Kent beach, Julius Caesar was met by British chariots. This unique book traces the rise and fall of the chariot right across the Old World, from Britain to Korea." Includes a chapter titled 'Survivals, Ritual and Racing'. Book is Fine. The orders made a major contribution to the defence and expansion of Western Chistendom, and this required considerable funds and reserves of manpower. This book describes the ways in which these were obtained, and giv e s a n a c count of extensive governmental machinery developed to enable the orders to carry out their tasks effectively. Although their members combined a military with a monastic way of life, the military orders are shown to have differed from o th e r re l ig i o us foundations not only in their daily routine but also in their adminstrative structure and in their predominantly lay membership." 9 Gilbert, Adrian; Wilson, Alan; Blackett, Baram. THE HOLY KINGDOM. THE QUEST FOR THE REAL KING ARTHUR.
London Bantam 1998 0593040627 / 9780593040621 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
379 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w maps, family trees, colour photographs. "(T)he authors, using ancient historical records, show that Britain was never fully conquered by the Romans but retained its culture, its royal families intermarrying with the Caesars. With the coming of Joseph of Arimathea in AD 37, its kings became converts to Christianity and the island the secret home of many of Jesus's followers. Out of these crosswinds blowing from Rome and Judea emerged the Holy Kingdom that was eventually to give birth to Constantine the Great and turn the whole Roman Empire to Christianity. Two British kings, both named Arthur - one, Arthur I of Warwickshire, the fourth-century son of the emperor Magnus Maximus, the other his sixth-century descendant and a king of Glamorgan - stand out like beacons in a darkening world. Their careers rolled into one and elaborated upon by the medieval poets, they became the single King Arthur of myth and legend. As a result of research going back over forty years, the authors are able to reveal the location of the graves of both Arthurs, the burial place of the 'true cross of Christ' and many other mysteries. This astounding book, corrects the falsified notions of history perpetuated by earlier scholars to reveal a deeper and more exciting vision. It uncovers a secret historical current that links our own times with the mysteries of Arthur and the Holy Grail. In doing so, it challenges many orthodox beliefs perpetuated by a Church which long ago lost touch with its roots." Light browning to edges of text block - migrates very lightly into page margins, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny tear at top of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minoe edge wear, tiny tear at top of spine.

"...covers the Regiment in action in Palestine, India, Malaya, Trieste and Cyprus, as well as when soldiering in Egypt, Greece, BAOR and at home. A complete chapter is de voted to the activities of the Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Territorial battalions...Each chapter describes a tour of duty of one battalion in a particular posting and is divided into two parts: the first paints a general picture of the role o f t h e b a ttalion showing why it was there and what it was like to be there with some mention of events of note. The second part of the chapter contains a detailed chonological account of the experiences of the battalion...In Malaya the Regi m en t w on f or it se lf between 1949 and 1953 a reputation unequalled throughout the whole 12-year Emergency there by any other British battalion. While the chapter devoted to Malaya provides the core of the book the other chapters reveal a con ti nou s th rea d o f d e vot ion to duty and the author is not exaggerating when he speaks in his preafce of 'a quiet, grim determination in the face of extremely hostile conditions' to do a worthwhile job as being characteristic of the Suffolk Re gim ent un til the ver y en d. 266 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550133551 Illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "Canada's military history consists of more than participation in the two world wars. Fro m the Riel Rebellions and the Boer War, to the Korean War, the United Nations peacekeeping missions and the recent Gulf War, Canadians have fought and died on our own frontiers and on distant continents. (This book), a richly documented his t o r y o f Canada's other wars, portrays the gradual evolution of our fighting forces. The raw militia of a young country and the patriotic recruits who marched to Pretoria would, after the crucible of two great wars, develop into seasoned troop s wh o co u ld h o ld the line in the bitter trench battles of the Korean War or maintain the peace in political hotspots such as Cyprus and the Congo. When, at the end of the Second World War, the United Nations established an international army t o kee p the p eac e, Ca nada began to assume a major role as peacekeeper to the world. Today, Canadian men and women continue to serve wherever peace is threatened, in crises requiring not only military expertise but patience and diplomacy. Lavis hl y il lu stra ted wit h p hot ographs, engravings, and paintings drawn from many collections, 'War and Peacekeeping' tells the often neglected story of the 'little' wars which have contributed much to our military tradition." THE HELLENISTIC AGE: A HISTORY., Green, Peter.

New York Modern Library 2007 9780679642 / 9789780679644 1st Printing Hard Cover Very Good + Very Good+
199 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w maps, genealogies. "The Hellenistic era witnessed the overlap of antiquity's two great Western civilizations, the Greek and the Roman. This was the epoch of Alexander's vast expansion of the Greco-Macedonian world, the rise and fall of his successors' major dynasties in Egypt and Asia, and, ultimately, the establishment of Rome as the first Mediterranean superpower. (This book) chronicles the years 336 to 30 BCE, from the days of Philip and Alexander of Macedon to the death of Cleopatra and the final triumph of Caesar's heir, the young Augustus. Peter Green's far-ranging study covers the prevelent themes and events of those centuries: the Hellenization of an immense swath of the known world - from Egypt to India - by Alexander's conquests; the lengthy and chaotic partition of this empire by rival Macedonian marshals after Alexander's death; the decline of the polis (city-state) as the predominant political institution; and, finally, Rome's moment of transition from republican to imperial rule. - To consider the three centuries prior to the dawn of the common era in a single short volume demands a scholar with a great command of both subject and narrative line. (This) is that rare book that manages to coalesce a broad spectrum of events, persons, and themes into one brief, indispensable, and amazingly accessible survey." One introduction pages leaf with soft edge crease. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing.

311 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "October 17, 1898, en route to Paris's Gare du Nord station, the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland's jewels were stolen from her train carriage. More than forty pieces, worth nearly 2 million Pounds today, disappeared that night, and the perpetrator along with them. It would become one of the most widely reported heists of the late Victorian era, but what no one knew was that the man who committed this most daring and well-planned theft had already committed nine almost identical crimes. A man who wore bespoke suits and handmade shoes; who used a dozen pseudonyms to dust over his tracks; who belonged to three smart London clubs and lived in the luxury of West End hotels; whose staple diet was champagne and whisky; who was pursued by London's top detectives for five and a half years and - by their own admission - proved smarter than them. A man who fell so much in love with a woman that he would steal and lie for her, only to be betrayed by her." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has some areas of very light edge wrinkling.

15 Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by Lieutenant General Sir Michael Gray. PARA! FIFTY YEARS OF THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT.
Brockhampton, London, 1999.
415 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1860199127 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The catalyst for the formation of British airborne forces came with the spectacular display of the capabilities of airborne assault by the German forces in the blitzkrieg against the west in 1940. Impressed by the daring and courage of the fallschirmjager, Churchill sought to create a similar arm for the British Army. Initially airborne operations were carried out by volunteers from all regiments and corps. While Britain was on the defensive, the newly formed parachute units took part in two airborne raids, carrying the war to the enemy in Italy and France. Of these, the most famous is the raid on Bruneval in 1942, duri ng which German rad ar technology was captured. By the time the Allies were ready to invade 'Fortress Europe' in 1944, The Parachute Regiment, which had been formed in 1942, comprised a large number of well equipped and highly trained battali o n s . Those of the 6th Air borne Division were given the task of holding the vital left flank of the Normandy invasion beaches to block German reinforcements and ensure swift Allied breakout over the strategically vital bridges. The Regiment's m os t fa mo u s hour was again an e xcellent example of the nature of the warfare it had been conceived to conduct: the ill-fated combined airborne/ground assault in Holland in September 1944 depended entirely on a surprise airborne assault to open a c or rid or in t o Germany along which the British Second Army was to pour into the heart of Hitler's Reich. Although the plan failed, it firmly established The Parachute Regiment as an elite force: tough, well-trained and capable of undertaking haza rdo us o per ati on s deep in enemy territ ory. This tradition is no less true now, fifty years on, with the post-war period having seen many further stirring examples of the Regiment's skill and valour throughout the world: from Suez and the jungl es o f Mal aya to t he mountains of the Radfan , the Falkland Islands and duties in Northern Ireland." "Formed as heavy cavalry for Cromwell's spartan army (The Blues) have soldiered with the same steady qualities for over three centuries. For the c harge of a squadron of the Royal Horse Guards is no light thing: at Dettingen and Warburg, Waterloo and Tel-el-Kebir, many an enemy fell to the heavy cavalry swords. Sir Garnet Wolsely once asked a badly wounded trooper of The Blues what h a d h a p p e n ed to his assailant. 'I cut him in two, Sir,' was the immediate reply. The Blues fought on foot at Abu Klea, where their action in closing the square saved the column but cost them their colonel; used machine guns to deadly effect i n t he G re at W ar ; were the first troops into Brussels in 1944 (something of a race, one leading armoured car was commanded by a steeplechaser, another by a Master of Foxhounds); and even resorted to donkeys in Cyprus. Amalgamated with The Roy al D rag oon s i n M arc h 1 969 The Blues and Royals, as the new Regiment is now known, may still be seen on ceremonial duties outside Whitehall; it would be wise, however, not to forget their fighting record." Dulles, Virginia Brassey's 2001 1574883127 / 9781574883121 Soft Cover Good
283 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H). "Recently, Greek-Turkish relations have improved markedly. This improvement has been largely due to significant liberalization in each country's domestic, foreign, and economic policy as Athens and Ankara respond to globalization and the demands of European integration. However, Greek-Turkish rivalry continues to be a considerable source of instability in Southeastern Europe. In the aftermath of NATO's intervention in Kosovo, the importance of terminating the Greek-Turkish antagonism has become increasingly clear, as war between these two pivotal states would further devastate the already destabilized region and jeopardize the very existence of NATO. Defying traditional approaches to Greek-Turkish relations, this volume offers a collection of essays integrating comparative politics, historical sociology, and other social sciences into the study of international relations. It addresses the two countries' recent domestic developments; their disputes over the Aegean Sea; the Cyprus problem; and the West's efforts to 'Europeanize' the region, which include its extensive involvement in the promotion of Greek-Turkish and Euro-Turkish cooperation." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor soiling, light edge wear, light rubbing - mainly on spine and rear cover, small corner creases, a few tiny scuffs on front cover, small area of surface paper loss on rear cover.
