THE ARROW., Dow, James.
7 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1997 1550285548 / 9781550285543 Soft Cover Fine
166 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "Here is the fascinating story of the rise and fall of the Arrow, the legendary interceptor jet aircraft developed by A.V. Roe Canada in the fifties. The Arrow was an unprecedented success story for Canada's fledgling aviation industry. It was conceived by its builders as the culmination of an impressive string of world firsts. Faster than any previous aircraft, it represented the leading edge of technology and an achievement of the highest calibre. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time and which remains hard to fathom even today. The Diefenbaker government cancelled the Arrow, and everything was destroyed, including the planes themselves. Nothing was to remain. Working from official documents, archives, interviews and a wide range of unofficial sources, James Dow presents the authoritative story of A.V. Roe Canada and its projects. He describes how the Arrow was developed and why it was killed. Dow takes us behind the scenes to the real dynamics and rivalries which were a part of the Arrow from the beginning and which explain its fate. This edition of the definitive books on the subject has been updated with a new introduction."

THE ARROW., Dow, James.
8 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1979 0888622811 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
160 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The Arrow (supersonic fighter) appeared on Avro's drawing boards in 1952 and was in the air by 1958. Test flights were a great success, and five aircraft had flown by 1959. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time, and which even now seems obscure. The Arrow was cancelled, and everything to do with it, including the planes that had already flown, was broken into scrap. Nothing was to remain. To tell the story of the Arrow, James Dow explores the impressive experience of Canada's aircraft industry, created from virtually nothing during the Second World War by C.D. Howe and recruits from the business world. Avro was put together when the government aircraft companies were sold off at the war's end. Avro's first postwar project was the Jetliner, conceived in 1945 for Air Canada (then TCA). It was very nearly the world's first passenger jet, and was first in the air in August 1949 only days behind Britain's Comet. Avro's military experience came with the CF-100 Canuck fighter, which flew first in 1951. There was even an experimental flying saucer, built for the U.S. armed forces. The Arrow was to be the culmination of this experience and this success." Previous owner's place, date and signature in ink on front free endpaper; some light toning to endpapers and to edges of text block, very tiny bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, several small tears with creases at top edge, light edge wear, one small edge chip, protectedin a mylar sleeve.

Atglen, PA Schiffer 1994 0887406823 / 9780887406829 Soft Cover Very Good +
48 pp, oblong (8 1/4" H x 11" D), stapled in wraps. B&w and color photographs, b&w drawings. "(The Luftwaffe looked) into the possibility of producing inexpensive aircraft which, however, would have enough power to quickly engage the enemy formations. Consequently, the machines which were created were predominantly made of wood, a raw material not important to the war effort. Assembly and construction were kept as simple as possible. In this way these machines could be completed without affecting the already overloaded industry. The rocket motor was a natural choice for a power plant due to its high performance. The take-off and landing procedures were kept simple to avoid long training periods for pilots. Take-off was accomplished via a tow or the vertical take-off. Landing was made on skids or the fighter abandoned and the pilot and important components (e.g. motor, weapons systems) recovered by parachute. What follows is the history of t he development of these technically highly-interesting aircraft." Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor wear at top/bottom of spine.

552 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "For some, like the aging man-about-town Agar Adamson, and the promising politician Talbot Papineau, the war was both the climax and the denouement of their careers. For others, like Harold Innis, just off an Ontario farm, the horror of the trenches changed the direction and purpose of their lives. For Vancouver secretary Grace MacPherson, war was a great adventure; for Ottawa socialite Ethel Chadwick, it was a wave that pushed her aside and left her stranded for life. For Max Aitken, better known as Lord Beaverbrook, it was an opportunity to be exploited. For Newfoundlander Owen Steele, it was an heroic duty that ended in a rain of bullets at Beaumont-Hamel. Sandra Gwyn has woven the intimate threads of these lives into a composite portrait that is overwhelming in its power." Minor wrinkle at top of hinges. BANNERS IN THE AIR: THE EIGHTH OHIO VOLUNTEERS AND THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR., Hard, Curtis V. Edited by Robert H. Ferrell.
14 Hard, Curtis V. Edited by Robert H. Ferrell. BANNERS IN THE AIR: THE EIGHTH OHIO VOLUNTEERS AND THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR.
The Kent State University Press, Kent, Ohio, (1988).
147 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos. "Here, in short compass, is a lively, highly personal, and compelling account of what the war was like to the soldiers....Hard's group (Hard was the colonel of the Eight Ohio Volunteer) was the only Ohio regiment to go to Cuba. The men saw no combat action because they arrived only a few days before the armistice of Santiago, but the value of Hard's account lies elsewhere - in the story he tells of the men in his regiment. He recounts the mechanics of mobilization, camp life, the pace and problems of campaigning, and the traditional enemy of soldierly life before this century - illness. Seventy-two of the 1,325 men in the regiment died from malaria or other illness in Cuba or aboard ship or at Montauk or in hospitals in the United States or at home. Hard's narrative is enhanced by over thirty photographs - many taken by and preserved in the personal album of Chief Musician William R. Palmer, bandmaster of the E ighth... Toronto Stoddart 1989 0773722939 / 9780773722934 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
348 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he first complete portrait of Joey Smallwood - the most loved, feared and hated of Newfoundlanders who, through a singular will, not only changed his country's history but also held political power continuously, almost unchallenged, for twenty-one years and eight months. Smallwood was a man who, in his time, played many parts: a union organizer who became a strike breaker, a journalist who carried on a running battle with the press, a self-proclaimed socialist whose private friends included the right-wing premier of Quebec Maurice Duplessis, the Portuguese dictator Antonio Salazar, and the most controversial president of the United States, Richard Nixon. He trusted no one and believed that the only way to get somewhere was to take the wheel himself. It was this singleness of mind and purpose that saw him through two bitter and hard-fought constitutional campaigns that would see Newfoundland enter Confederation as our tenth province. Horwood cuts through the hype and half-truths, the anecdotes and legend, to get at the man and his times." Very minor wrinkling at top of spine. MITCHELL: PIONEER OF AIR POWER., Levine, Isaac Don. Foreword by Lt. General D.C. Strother.
19 Levine, Isaac Don. Foreword by Lt. General D.C. Strother. MITCHELL: PIONEER OF AIR POWER.
New York Duell, Sloan and Pearce 1958 Revised Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
420 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "The life of Billy Mitchell epitomizes the story of the development of air power, and the author presents this life against the background of an age that was revolutionized by the rise of the flying machine. Like Teddy Roosevelt, Billy Mitchell was the scion of a dynastic fam-ily, grandson of an empire builder, son of a United States Senator. At eighteen, he enlisted in the Spanish-American War. From that moment on his story belongs to the annals of his age. Mr. Levine has had access to the private files of General Mitchell, to the archives of the Mitchell family, and has also had the co-operation of many of Mitchell's closest friends and associates. The result is a fact-filled chronicle, with astonishing anecdotes, exceptional personal material, unknown pages of aviation lore, a story that brings to light striking facts and dramatic personalities. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Douglas MacArthur, Fiorello LaGuardia, General Arnold, and scores of others appear in new or little-known roles. Mitchell himself cuts a heroic national figure, the indomitable crusader, the pioneer as well as the prophet of air power." Contents: Foreword; Author's Note (New Edition); Father and Son; To the Philippines; From Alaska to Aviation; Musketeer of the Air; Flight to Victory; Blueprint for the Future; Disturber of the Peace; Flying Crusader; "A Bomb was Fired Today"; The Way of an Eagle; Stormy Petrel; What Price Heresy; Judicial Extravaganza; Man Against the Age; Postscript; Mitchell's Own Writings; Index.
