THE BANTAMS: THE UNTOLD STORY OF WORLD WAR I., Allinson, Sidney.
1 Allinson, Sidney. THE BANTAMS: THE UNTOLD STORY OF WORLD WAR I.
Mosaic, (Oakville, 1982).
287 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. B&w photos. "At the outset of the 1914-18 War, no recruiting officer would look at any young man who was in less than the prime and peak of physical condition...Any volunteer who was less than the regulation five feet three inches in height got very short shrift...But the war was not very old before the official reaction to undersized volunteers had to change dramatically. Britain's Regular Army, the Expeditionary Force, was virtually wiped out in the first months of fighting...This book relates the history of the Bantam Battalions from beginning to bloody end - one might almost say 'out of nowhere, back into obscurity', for it is suprising how many official histories of the Great War have ignored the very real part these little men played..." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light browning to edges of textblock, tiny stain of fore-edge of textblock, light browning to edges of covers, very light wear at top of spine, slight curling to fore-edge of covers. VG-

Toronto Ryerson Press 1959 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good- Good-
204 pp, 8 5/8" H. B&w photographs. "Urged many times to write the story of his life, Mr. Robert Campbell, now in his eighty-eighth year, finally acceded to the request. The result is this very readable book of reminiscence, rich in humour and history, adventure and anecdote, told by a master storyteller. In a breezy and colloquial style the author tells of his experiences in and around Banff, of his political life, experiences in the army during World War I, and his encounters with important visitors in the Canadian Rockies. This is not only a fascinating story, but a valuable record of early days when the Rockies were just beginning to attract attention as a tourist centre for the world." Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, creases at top of rear panel, several edge tears archivally taped, light rubbing/soiling.

In this book, from dawn to nightfall on June 18, 1815, hour by hour, sometimes minute by minute, we follow each twist of the a ct io n i n tu rn from: The English point of view (by William Seymour)...The French point of view (by Jacques Champagne)...The German point of view (by Eberhard Kaulbach)...As the action unfolds, each country's writer gives his own view (plus the won der fu ll y imm edi ate voices of his countrymen who survived to write of their experience) of the day that called forth some of the most brilliant tactical maneuvering - and the bloodiest and fiercest fighting - in the history of warfare." ZERO TOLLERANCE: AN INTIMATE MEMOIR BY THE MAN WHO REVOLUTIONIZED FIGURE SKATING., Cranston, Toller. With Martha Lowder Kimball.
9 Cranston, Toller. With Martha Lowder Kimball. ZERO TOLLERANCE: AN INTIMATE MEMOIR BY THE MAN WHO REVOLUTIONIZED FIGURE SKATING.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1997 0771023340 / 9780771023347 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
352 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "Toller Cranston is: six-time Canadian figure-skating champion, celebrity, costume designer, artist extraordinaire, broadcaster, choreographer of skating routines, raconteur, bon vivant, coach, world traveller, art collector, legend and enigma. In 1976 he won Olympic bronze (so why did it feel like defeat?). This book tells the story of his life after those fateful games at Innsbruck. The rise and fall of Toller's first professional ice show is described in soul-searing detail. His subsequent triumphant tour of Europe as the Skater of the Century is recounted, in contrast, with wicked humour. There are vignettes here of his encounters with the rich and famous from Leonard Bernstein to Pierre Cardin and of his life among Europe's aristocrats and bohemians. Toller has experienced the high life and the low. He has stayed in the most luxurious hotels, held court in palatial houses, sought seclusion in beautiful estates. But the hard times took their toll. In the early 1990s a combination of circumstances, including a disastrous professional association with out-of-control American skater Christopher Bowman and a lawsuit that dragged on for years (ending in complete victory for Toller), led to a personal crisis from which recovery came slowly. But even in the blackest hours, Toller's humour and creative powers never deserted him - an extraordinary self -portrait written by a uniquely gifted individual. Toller's wit, insight, and delicious way with words will entertain and astound readers whether they are skating fans or not." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

Daw, New York, (1994, 2nd./1995, 2nd./1996, 2nd./1999, Ist printing). Mass Market Paperbacks Very Good Cover art by Jody Lee.
410 pp, 416 pp, 413 pp, 406 pp. - 4 volumes. "To call the Kigh was the height of bard's magic. Only those born with the gift could learn to Sing these spirits of earth, air, fire, and water into doing their bidding, and even someone as gifted as the Princess Annice must spend years studying at the Bardic Hall to truly master the art. And for Annice, one of those rare talents able to Sing the elemental spirits from each of the four quarters, the call of magic was too strong to be denied, even if it meant renouncing her royal blood and privileges. But Annice might have made a different choice if she could have foreseen that ten years after she'd transferred her life and loyalties from the royal palace to the Bardic Hall, she'd find herself fleeing from the King's Guards. For Annice was twice guilty of treason, first for imperiling the order of succession by becoming pregnant, and second for aiding the father of her unborn child, the Duc of Ohrid, to escape the palace dungeons and the sentence of death hanging over his head. Now the fugitives' only hope lay in tracking down and bringing to justice the enemy who'd masterminded the Duc's downfall, a dangerous foe who had found a way to tie lies and truths together into a knot even the most powerful of Bardic spells could not unravel." Interiors - vol. 1 has a few pages with small corner crease and one page with large corner crease, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exteriors - light edge wear to covers; vol. 4 has light creases on spine, is lightly cocked and has 3 tiny dents on rear cover - light migration in rear pages; vol 1 has large soft corner crease on front cover, slight corner curling on rear cover, light browning to edges of textblock and tiny bump/tear at bottom of rear hinge.
