THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS., Moore, Clement C.
3 Moore, Clement C. THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS.
New York Alfred A. Knopf 1984 0394868633 / 9780394868639 4th Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Anita Lobel.
Unpaginated, 10 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, charmingly illustrated in full colour throughout. "Though Clement C. Moore wrote the poem in New York City, most artists place it in an idyllic country setting. Now the Cadecott Medal winning artist, Anita Lobel, returns the poem to the city and brings to her illustrations the warmth and glowing detail that reflect her own affection for her city as it looked and felt in the late nineteenth century. With rows of rooftops and chimneys, the ornate interior of the sleeping house, and a miniature St. Nick coursing through the nighttime sky over a majestic bridge and a silent city, she has created a haunting Victorian vision of the Christmas classic." Faint marks from erased pencilled name on verso of front free endpaper, minor wrinkle at bottom of spine, very minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds - minor elsewhere with one or two tiny tears, small tear with crease at bottom of rear hinge.

CUPID AND THE JACARANDA., Sitwell, Sacheverell.
6 Sitwell, Sacheverell. CUPID AND THE JACARANDA.
Macmillan, London, 1952, first edition.
217 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "....ranges the wide field between fact and fiction. Partly, in its beginnings, it is Mr. Sitwell's autobiography in terms of what he has described and seen. An American critic has written of him : 'Perhaps no writer has ever covered a wider range in the arts that make life beautiful. Particularly impressive is the sum and volume of his writings on architecture, painting and sculpture.' The same critic continues: 'But his passi o n f o r m u s ic and the theatre is almost as constant,' and of this enthusiasm there is full evidence in this new work, which contains particularly beautiful passages on dancing. A good deal of the last part of the book is taken up with flower d es c ri pt io n s, a nd here the author writes with all the fire he devoted to 'The Kingdom of the Birds'....Mr. Sitwell has never trodden the beaten track, and 'Cupid and the Jacaranda' is unlike any other book. It shows him at his best, and wil l n ot fa il to fi nd its de votees." A few tiny faint foxing specks on endpapers - also at top edge of title page and preceeding page, slight fading and a few tiny foxing marks to color on top of textblock, light wrinkling at bottom of spine , mi nor edg e we ar. D ust ja cket has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny chips, two small tears - one with creases, light fading/browning to spine and flap-folds - tiny foxing marks on flap-folds, light browning and scattered foxing on ins ide s urfa ce.
