1 Ansell, Mike, Colonel Sir. Foreword By H.R.H. The Prince Philip. SOLDIER ON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Peter Davies 1973 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
180 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). **Inscribed on half title page: "G_____ A_____ Best wishes Mike Ansell Oct. 14th 1973". B&w plates. "In June, 1940, when Colonel Mike had just been awarded the D.S.O. and was the youngest Commanding Officer in the Army, disaster struck: he was blinded in a hail of bullets at St Valery. The way he has overcome this handicap, and other more heartbreaking losses, is the inspiring theme of this book. For Colonel Mike has never failed to 'soldier on' in the face of adversities that would have broken lesser men. Whether catching salmon on the Torridge in Devon, creating the beautiful garden at his home near Bideford, planning a new show-jumping course with his specially designed magnetic board, attending St Dunstan's reunions or sitting in his study typing this book, to everything he does Colonel Mike bring his own unique brand of enthusiasm and professionalism - just as he did before the war, when, for example, he organised the famous Trick Ride for his regiment, the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, and show-jumped for England. Chairman of the British Show-Jumping Association and of the British Horse Society for some twenty-five years and now President of the British Equestrian Federation, he has done more than any other single man to make Britain one of the leading equestrian nations in the world, and to stimulate the ever-growing interest in riding as a competitive and leisure sport." Publishers' promotional material laid-in. Scattered tiny foxing marks on top third of both boards and on edges of text bkock, light wear at corners. Dust jacket has bee price-clipped, heavy creases at top corner of rear flap-fold, tiny foxing marks on top inside edge, some light edge wear/wrinkling, small closed tear on front hinge, small repair at top edge - archivally taped.

2 Bayne-Powell, Rosamond. HOUSEKEEPING IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. (18th CENTURY.)
London John Murray 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
208 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Decorations, furniture, pictures, china, linen, the kitchen, food, drink, entertaining, washing, sanitation, heating, lighting, servants, illness, remedies, handicrafts, money, taxation and household superstitions and customs - all, so to speak, bring grist to the author's mill and the result is a graphic and convincing presentment of life in the period. The 'good old days' may have been enjoyable for those with plenty of money and good health, for the sick and poor much of life must have been horrible, the squalor behind the grandeur, the dirt underneath the cloth of gold - but how gracious and artistic the great houses were." Light stain on page leaf 111/112, five faint line marks on fore-edge of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light browning on spine and flap-folds, light edge wear, several small and tiny edge chips, several cup ring stains/impressions on front panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

291 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 077351757X "...argues that Catholics and Protestants shared very similar views of Christian womanhood. Both lauded the influence of the virtuous Christian woman, used the same female r ole models from the Bible, and saw the home as the locus of the construction of female piety. Yet each group castigated the other for having antifemale values. Protestants developed the slovenly, drunken 'Biddy' as a stereotype of Catholic women and Catholics portrayed Protestant devotional and family life as cold and arid. Observers of present-day Northern Ireland will find these historical contrasts of immediate relevance." STORIES OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS., Crowlesmith, J., Rev.
7 Crowlesmith, J., Rev. STORIES OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS.
London Aldine Hard Cover Good Fair H.S. Greig.
172 pp, 7 1/2" H. Red boards with black lettering/illustration on spine and front board. Colour frontispiece, b&w illustrations. No date, but Xmas greetings on free front endpaper dated 1936. "The stories that follow are taken from Sir Thomas Malory's 'Morte D'Arthur', the great collection of romances about King Arthur which was written in the fifteenth century, and printed first of all by Caxton. Scholars say that Arthur was a British hero, one of the leaders of the Britons against the English invaders in the sixth century. In course of time legends centred round his name in the memory of the defeated race. To the original stories the Middle Ages added others, some of which belonged to later heroes, and, finally, these were combined with various legends of the Christian Church about the finding of the Holy Grail, the cup from which Christ is said to have drunk at the Last Supper with His disciples. Thus we get the beautiful cycle of romances which shines in the pages of Malory's great book. This version has been written for younger children. As far as possible the old-world style of Malory's narrative has been preserved, while the stories chosen are those which seem to present a message to youth." Contents: Introduction; The Sword in the Stone; King Arthur sees a Strange Knight; The Sword Excalibur; Balin, the Poor Knight; The Invisible Knight; The Battle of the Brothers; The Table Round; The Merciful Knight; The Death of Merlin; King Arthur and Accolon; The Lady of the Lake; The Marvellous Giant; The Two Giants; The Disguised Knight; The Shipwreck of Sir Lamorak; Launcelot and the Dragon; Sir Bors in the Castle Adventurous; Sir Gawaine's Rescue; The Knight with the Ugly Coat; Sir Tristram and King Mark; The Story of Sir Alisander; When Sir Launcelot was Mad; Seeking the Holy Grail; Sir Galahad's Shield; Sir Launcelot and the Holy Grail; Sir Percivale and the Lion; The Holy Grail is Seen; Fed by the Holy Grail; The Death of Sir Galahad; The Poisoned Apple; The Lady of Astolat; End of the Table Round; The Death of Arthur. THE MEANING OF PUCK: HOW HOCKEY EXPLAINS MODERN CANADA., Dowbiggin, Bruce.
10 Dowbiggin, Bruce. THE MEANING OF PUCK: HOW HOCKEY EXPLAINS MODERN CANADA.
Key Porter, Toronto, 2008, first edition.
232 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9781554700417 "In a series of essays that is a road trip across the nation's cultural landscape, (Dowbiggin) shows how the national passion for hockey reflects - or deflects - the issues of globalization, regionalism, anti-Americanism, militarism, violence, racism and greed. Why are Canadians, for instance, such strenuous advocates of pacifism and non-militarism around the world while simultaneously embracing - and promoting - the world's most vicious and violent brand of hockey? As the legion of apologists for Todd Bertuzzi's thuggish play dramatize, it's not the Americans who popularize violence in hockey. It's us. Dowbiggen tries to come to terms with the absurd hero worship of The Great One. Or why Canadians so smugly spoof American ignorance while making a 'cultural' icon of Don Cherry. Is it because in a nation without rules or standards he still stands for something, however distasteful? (He) conducts an autopsy on the essentially permanent futility of the Toronto Maple Leafs and shows how the team's declining fortunes mirror the shift in power and influence from Ontario to the West, particularly Alberta. As fans outside Ontario chafe at the Toronto- centrism of 'Hockey Night in Canada', they seek a new locus of hockey influence. Dowbiggin explores questions such as: Why the Vancouver Canucks are the new frontier? What do you mean the Montreal Canadiens are owned by an American? Why is hockey such a safe place for characters such as Alan Eagleson, Graham James and David Frost to hide? And why is it so hard to get them out once they've attached themselves to power? Most of all: Why does the sniff of the Canadian jock have such a hypnotic effect on our culture? 'The Meaning of Puck' is a funny, acidic, irreverent, argumentative and often infuriating but always thought-provoking look into the fabric of a nation straining to keep old traditions alive and incorporate new national myths." Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Fine/Near Fine

SILVER CENTRE (THE STORY OF AN ONTARIO MINING CAMP)., Fancy, Peter.
13 Fancy, Peter. SILVER CENTRE (THE STORY OF AN ONTARIO MINING CAMP).
Cobalt, Ontario Highway Book Shop 1985 0889543062 / 9780889543065 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good Signed by Author
145 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, diagrams. SIGNED BY AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE. "Silver Centre was one of Canada's celebrated mining camps. It discovered millions of dollars in silver ore (when silver's price averaged 50 cents an ounce) and probably has as much mineral wealth today in its unexamined Keewatin ground for some future economic development. But most importantly, in terms of Ontario's social history , this Silver Centre story represents the way of life for many of the people living in northern Ontario during the early years of (the twenieth) century. The story follows in detail the mining prospectors of 1907 - their silver discoveries; the early mines - their success and failures; the depressing World War I years; then rebirth with the mother lode discovery in 1920 and its climactic decade of phenomenal silver treasure; finally, the inevitable exhaustion of known deposits. Falling metal prices discourage continued searches. Mines close - sudden abandonment. This particular drama of prospectors and developers struggling with the Precambrian rocks is a constant, unifying theme. (This) is the story of a mining community and its people, of fellowship and stubborn pleasure." Very light edge wear, previous owner's name/date in ink on free front endpaper and embossed blind stamp on half-title page. A previous owner has amended the map of Silver Centre, 1924, adding the location of two rinks and a ball park, extending the left side of the map to show the rail yard, railway station and loading ramp, and filling in some squares indicating the location of buildings with red ink. Very light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has a few small tears (archivally taped) and chips; moderate wrinkling along top edge; light browning - moderate on spine; light soiling and rubbing; small light stain, partial cup mark on front panel; small area of tiny perforations on rear panel; book color offset on inside surface; now in a mylar sleeve.

15 Ferguson, John. With Stan & Shirley Fischler. THUNDER AND LIGHTNING.
Scarborough, Ontario Prentice-Hall 1989 0139206469 / 9780139206467 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
334 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "If the Montreal Canadiens had a weakness in the early 1960s it was size. Too often, small Canadiens were being battered against the boards and checked out of action. In 1963, that problem was solved, and a big part of the solutions was John Ferguson. Chosen out of the American Hockey Leauge by Frank Selke, Ferguson showed up in training camp with a reputation as a good hockey player, and one who hadn't lost a fight in the AHL. He lived up to his reputation during his first game in Boston. At the opening faceoff, he got into a fight with Ted Green, which he won. Not only that, Ferguson proceeded to score twice in that game, which ended in a 4-4 tie. John Ferguson played for the Canadiens for eight years, until he retired in 1971. During those years, he shared in five Stanley Cups, played five hundred games, scored 145 goals and 158 assists, and spent 1214 minutes in the penalty box. An extremely aggressive forward, he acted as the club's policeman and extended his dislike of opposing players off the ice. Ferguson retired from the Canadiens in 1971 to begin a new career as a businessman. He came back to hockey as Coach and General Manager of the New York Rangers in 1976, then as General Manager of the Winnipeg Jets, and finally as General Manager of Team Canada. Having retired once more from hockey, (he) will dedicate himself to his second great sporting love, as President of The Windsor Raceway." Minor wrinkling to top/bottom of text block, tiny dent to top edge of front board. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, minor edge browning light crease down front flap.

Over the past few decades, Inuit writers have responded with enthusiasm to the challenges and opportunities provided by a written language. This anthology fills a significant gap in bringing together, for the first time, a selection of Inuit writings that are often not easily available to readers in the South. The stories, poems, essays, plays, memoirs, and songs included in this book draw the reader irresistibly into the world of the Inuit, to share their memories and their hopes, their joy and their grief, their anger and their laughter." 211 pp, 9 1/4" H. Inscribed on title page: "Best Wishes Rob / Paul Henderson". B&w photographs. "(Paul Henderson) tells the story of the first Canada-Soviet Union series that kept Canadians riveted to their radios and televisions. Although the 1972 series was the highlight of his career, (he) has a lot more to tell. As a Detroit Red Wing, he played with such greats as Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, and Ted Lindsay and experienced the heartache of being on the losing side in two Stanley Cup finals. Dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1968, he found himself on the ice with the team that had won the Leaf's last Cup the previous year, skating alongside Dave Keon, Tim Horton, George Armstrong, and Ron Ellis. Participating in one of the game's golden eras, Henderson had the privilege of locking horns with the likes of Phil Esposito, Bobby Orr, and Bobby Hull. And, like Hull, he, too, jumped to the World Hockey Association, where he witnessed the arrival of Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and a new breed of superstar. Finally, Henderson describes the difficult transition he and all professional athletes must face when retirement inevitably comes." Previous owner's place and signature on front free endpaper, scattered tiny faint foxing marks on top of text block, minor wrinkling at top of spine, tiny dent on bottom edge of front board. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, very light rubbing.
