THE ILLUSTRATED ATLAS OF JERUSALEM., Bahat, Dan. With Chaim T. Rubinstein. Introduction by Eric Meyers. Translated by Shlomo Ketko.
1 Bahat, Dan. With Chaim T. Rubinstein. Introduction by Eric Meyers. Translated by Shlomo Ketko. THE ILLUSTRATED ATLAS OF JERUSALEM.
Simon and Schuster, New York, 1990.
152 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0134516427 "Lavishly illustrated with more than 400 color illustrations, the Atlas looks at the history of Jerusalem with maps, drawings, and isometric reconstructions, all updated with the latest archaeological evidence. Jerusalem is perhaps the most interesting city on earth. Sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, it dates back to at least the third millenium BCE. David made it his capital; Solomon glorified it with his Te mple; it fell to Babylonia in 586 BCE and was rebuilt by Ezra and Nehemiah; it was the city of the Maccabees and of the Herods, and the place where Jesus was tried and crucified. Titus razed its buildings and destroyed the Temple in 70 CE. A f t e r t he revolt of Bar Kochba, the Romans made Jerusalem a pagan shrine. Jerusalem fell to the Crusaders in 1099; in 1187, Muslims, led by Saladin, captured the city and held it almost continuously until the British took control after World Wa r I. Th e B ritish Mandate ended in 1948 when the State of Israel was born. In 1967, Israel reunited the city. Special features in the Atlas include: concise, easy-to-read text; four-color illustrations, maps, drawings, and photos throughout ; de fi nit i ve an d a uthoritative information; selected bibliography of further readings; thorough index; an up-to-date approach, based on the latest findings. For anyone interested in biblical archaeology; geography; Jewish studies, culture, an d his tor y; a nd th e h isto ry and culture of the Middle East, (this book) is certain to be an invaluable resource." Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1998, reprint.
312 pp, 8vo (8 3/8" H), soft cover. ISBN 0521457270 "On 18 March 1314, Jacques de Molay, Grand Master of the Templars, was burned at the stake. For almost two centuries the knights of the Order of the Temple had flourished during the Crusades in Palestine and Syria, and in the West, notably in France. But in 1307, the Templars in France were arrested by King Philip IV's officials in the name of the Inquisition, their property seized and the men charged with serious heresies, including the denial of Christ, homosexuality, and idol worship. Confessions, extracted under torture, were brought before royal and papal tribunals, but in 1310 a number of Templar brothers mounted a defence of their Order, refuelling the controveries which cont inued for a further four years before the final executions. Malcolm Barber's fascinating account, assessing the charges brought against the Order, once again puts the Templars on trial." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownersh i p m a r k s . 414 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Realizing from mediaeval documents that the initial Nova Scotia refuge of A.D. 1398 must have harboured many Grail believers, and that the secret colony must have expanded, Bradley began to trace evidence of Grail Knights from Nova Scotia, through New Brunswick to the St. Lawrence River, and on to the Great Lakes as far as Niagara, New York State, and central Pennsylvania. Evidence of their presence has been uncovered on both the Canadian and American sides of this great waterway. Bradley poses compelling questions about his discoveries, and offers plausible and provocative answers as we travel with him and his companions (both academic and amateur) along the trail of the 'Grail Knights of North America'." Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1996, reprint.
425 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 0521589878 Maps, battle plans. "The success of the First Crusade, and its capture of Jerusalem in 1099, has been conventionally explained by its ideological and political motivation. This book looks at the Fi rst Crusade primarily as a military campaign and asks why it was so successful. Modern writing about the Crusade has tended to emphasise the moral dimension and the development of the idea of the crusade but its fate was ultimately decide d o n t h e f ield of battle. This book looks at the nature of war at the end of the eleventh century and the military experience of all the contending parties in order to explain its extraordinary success. It is the first such examination, tak in g i nt o a cc ou n t all other factors but emphasising the military." Interior - previous owner's small stamp on inside of front cover. BRASSEY'S BOOK OF THE CRUSADES., Miller, David.
12 Miller, David. BRASSEY'S BOOK OF THE CRUSADES.
Washington, D.C. Brassey's 2001 1574882929 / 9781574882926 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
128 pp, 11 1/4" H. "The crusades, of which there were several, conducted by many forcees from different nations, were ultimately unsuccessful, the last crusaders being forced out of the Holy Land in 1291. However, as this fascinating history shows, they did serve to advance many military concepts. Notable among these were the logistics involved in moving thousands of combined forces across frequently hostile regions; fortifications and siege warfare; and armour and weapons. There were heroes and villians, too - again on both sides - and examples of great generalship, military ineptitude, magnamity, and atrocity. The most notable leaders during these conflicts were Richard I, Lionheart, King of England, and the saracen commander, Saladin. While they never met, each had a justifiable respect for the other. This handsome volume encapsulates all the intriguing contrasts between the combatant forces, outlining the formation of the Christian Military Orders - such as the Knights Hospitallers - and the ferocious saracen armies. It describes the major weapons, such as siege machines, as well as personal arms and armour, and the important battles. Liberally illustrated with maps and diagrams, plus contemporary and other illustrations of the people, places and warfare, (this book) is a highly readable military history of a period and events that have an enduring fascination for military enthusiast and general reader alike." Minor edge wear. Dust jacket has some small areas of very light edge wrinkling.

224 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, map. "The Mediterranean coast of Turkey is a region of quite exceptional natural beauty. It is also rich in historical remains. Greeks, Romans, Seljuks and Crusaders have all le ft their mark. The author, who speaks Turkish fluently, wanted to see southern Turkey before the Government carried out their plans to develop it for tourists, and this book is an account of his travels. It is essentially about the present: a b o u t the land as it is today and the people who live in it, but there is a strong awareness of past events and personalities. Travelling by indigenous transport, bus, 'dolmus' and donkey, and staying in Third Class hotels by preference, he t a lk ed t o pe o ple along the coast from Marmaris to Mersin and also made a detour through the Taurus Mountains to the old Seljuk capital of Konya. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1992.
238 pp, 8 1/2" H, soft cover. ISBN 0521428920 Maps, drawings. "When maritime transport and communication depended on muscle and wind-power, the Mediterranean Sea functioned as a symbiotic force between the civilisations which surrounded it, at on ce the major dividing barrier and the major connecting element. In this study, the technological limitations of maritime traffic are considered in conjunction with the peculiar geographical conditons within which it operated and which led t o t h e e s tablishment of major sea lanes on trunk routes along which traffic could move safely, efficiently, and economically. These trunk routes remained virtually unchanged from antiquity to the sixteenth century, and eventually constituted e co n om ic a n d st rategic maritime frontiers between civilisations. At the same time, the technological limitations of the oared galley meant that coasts and islands along the trunk routes had also to be held, a necessity which favoured geogr aph ica ll y t he Chr is ti an West over the world of Byzantium and Islam." Artus, London, 1982.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1898799067 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w. "This lively account of the reigns of the kings and queens of England and Scotland is a capsule history of Britain studded with a vast va riety of facts both well-known and obscure. While it is no surprise to read in these pages that Henry VIII had a marital record unequalled in the history of the British monarchy, it is less common knowledge that not one but two kings were cr o w n e d i n England in the year 1066. American schoolchildren to this day are unlikely to be taught that George III, so reviled by the Colonists, led an exemplary family life, was a fine gardener and the first Hanoverian king to speak English wi th ou t a fo r ei gn accent. Richard the Lionheart, the twelfth century crusader-king, never learned English at all; he raised as much money as he could for the costly Crusades and was reported to have said that he would sell London itself if he co uld fi nd a nyo ne to buy it. (This book) is a treasury of such information, entertainingly written and beautifully illustrated, which also serves as a biographical dictionary of the British monarchs from the Norman Conquests to Elizabeth II.
