Some town centres changed beyond recognition as demolition workers ma de way for the new, and on the streets, out came some strange new fashions - hot pants, loons, flared trousers, ponchos and plafform shoes. As youngsters danced to the Bay City Rollers, Slade and Gary Glitter, local cinemas were emptying a n d c l o s i n g down. The Seventies was also a decade of protests, strikes and other forms of industrial unrest, culminating in the 'Winter of Discontent' in 1978-9. The following pages look again at the Seventies in Surrey and recapture tho s e ti me s o f ha pp in es s and sorrow, Ford Capris, Austin Allegros and Morris Marinas." Interior - printers ink smudges on page 55 (text still very legible), small stain at bottom edge of rear cover, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ow ne rsh ip ma rks . RAF FIGHTER SQUADRONS IN THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN., Robinson, Anthony.
4 Robinson, Anthony. RAF FIGHTER SQUADRONS IN THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN.
London Brockhampton Press 1999 1860199070 / 9781860199073 Reprint Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
287 pp, 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "Squadrons were the basic combat units in RAF Fighter Command; their combat effectiveness was a factor of crucial importance - transcending even the abilities of the brilliant individual pilots within the squadrons and the tactical and strategic skills of the senior commanders who deployed them. That the Battle of Britain was not won by courage alone emerges from the pages of this book, which examines the problems of tactics and leadership encountered by the RAF's fighter force when thrown into a battle for which it was less than adequately prepared. In an opening, wide-ranging chapter, the author considers the general course of the battle and the organization, tactics and equipment with which the RAF went to war. Thereafter he concen-trates on the operations and experiences of eight squadrons heavily engaged in the battle, describing and analysing the events, decisions and circumstances of the daily encounters with German intruders. Meticulously researched from official documents and by consultation with many of the survivors of 'the few', (this book) provides an illuminating new perspective on the greatest air battle of the Second World War." Tiny bump at top of spine.
