5 Betcherman, Lita-Rose. THE LITTLE BAND: THE CLASHES BETWEEN THE COMMUNISTS AND THE POLITICAL AND LEGAL ESTABLISHMENT IN CANADA, 1928-1932.
Ottawa Deneau 0888790716 / 9780888790712 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
247 pp, 9 1/4" H. "In 1921, a 'little band' of disparate activists formed the Communist Party of Canada. Civil authorities across the country reacted with fear, even though R.C.M.P. officers described the party as 'a handful of ineffective English-speaking leaders, a negligible French-speaking element, an isolated Jewish element, with the agitators drawn from the Finnish and Ukrainian immigrants, whose benevolent societies paid for the Party's maintenance'. (This book) documents the ensuing clashes between the Canadian communists and Canada's political and legal establishments, from 1928 to 1932. Dr. Betcherman skillfully recreates the excitement of street fights and court cases, culminating in the spectacular trial of communist Tim Buck. (She) interviewed Communist Party members, Crown attorneys and Defence lawyers of the period, and was granted access to rare transcripts of trials, appeals and correspondence in compiling this, the first detailed and thoroughly entertaining history of these events." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, three very small corner bumps. Dust hacket has very light edge wear and wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dent on rear hinge, tiny scuffs on rear flap-fold.

A DEEP SENSE OF WRONG: THE TREASON, TRIALS, AND TRANSPORTATION TO NEW SOUTH WALES OF LOWER CANADIAN REBELS AFTER THE 1838 REBELLION., Boissery, Beverley.
6 Boissery, Beverley. A DEEP SENSE OF WRONG: THE TREASON, TRIALS, AND TRANSPORTATION TO NEW SOUTH WALES OF LOWER CANADIAN REBELS AFTER THE 1838 REBELLION.
Dundurn, Toronto, 1995.
367 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550022423 B&w maps, illustrations. "In 1839 fifty-eight men left Montreal for the penal colony of New South Wales. They were unimportant men outside their own parishes, ordinary people who had been caught up in the political whirlwind of the 1838 rebellion. Even though they were all civilians, they had been tried by court martial. Convicted of treason, their properties forfeited to the crown, they paid a heavy price for rebellion. And as convicts in Australia, they were considered the lowest of a bad lot. During their years there, however, they earned the respect of Sydney's citizens. (This) is an intimate, grass-roots history, based largely on surviving legal records and on the writings of some of the individuals who lived the story. We follow the men from the confusion of battle, to the court martial, and then to lonely exile in a land half a world away. Their anguish and dignity will resonate today." Light waviness to top/bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light rubbing, a few small areas of light edge wrinkling. Very Good+/Very Good

"(T)he story of a young Anglo-Irish beauty's visit to Delhi for the 1911 Royal Durbar, where a new King, George V, is to be proclaimed Emperor to reinforce the loyalty to the Crown of India's ruling Princes. For a fortnight of relentless ceremony, unheard of extravagance and imposing military spectacle, in the setting of a vast Tented City complete with its own farms, railway, telegraph and post offices, Lilah Wingfield meets many of the most remarkable colonial characters of the day, including some of the foremost Indian Princes, vying to stage the most lavish display to prove their devotion to the Raj. As the tents are dismantled, Lilah travels through India - to the dangerous Khyber Pass on the Afghan border, to Rajasthan, to the gory sites of the Mutiny and to stay with India's only female ruler, the Begum of Bhopal. Her diary shows her deepening awareness of the ambivalence of certain maharajahs towards British Rule even while she is being entertained royally in their lakeside palaces. Her Irish upbringing gives her an instictive feeling for the mixture of their longing for independence and an affection for the mother country." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Toronto Doubleday Canada 1980 0385146949 / 9780385146944 Hard Cover Very Good Good
252 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "On Christmas Day 1941, Hong Kong, 'the Gibraltar of the Orient', crumbled under the massive onslaught of crack Japanese invasion troops. The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the Royal Rifles of Canada, ill equipped and unblooded, fought side by side with four other British Commonwealth units to defend the Crown colony. For eighteen days, the heavily outnumbered soldiers surpassed all expectations, winning lasting honour on the battlefield before being marched off to spend four and a half years in Japanese prison camps. They had endured constant air strikes, artillery barrages, vicious assaults, and hand-to-hand combat. Their heroic sacrifice is made all the more tragic when one realizes that, from the start, they were considered expendable. Base on interviews with survivors of the battle and the POW cages, (this) is a powerful tale of human courage in the face of impossible odds." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light to moderate edge wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, several small tears archivally taped, light water marks on lower inside of flap-folds, light fading to spine colour.

20 Fowler, William M., Jr. REBELS UNDER SAIL: THE AMERICAN NAVY DURING THE REVOLUTION.
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1976, book club edition.
320 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Almost as soon as the smoke had settled at Lexington and Concord, the American Revolution was being fought on the sea as well as on land. A fragile and disunited coalition of thirteen colonies, embarking on a war with a great naval power, began to build a navy for the 'preservation of the lives, liberty and property of the good people of these Colonies'. (This book) provides a vivid and authoritative history of h o w t h e new American nation set about its task. Americans have always been a sea-minded people, and even before the Declaration of Independence was signed, the Congress resolved to build a strong navy. The maritime skills of New England and th e ti m be r, p itch and turpentine of the colonies had made them a major resource for the British navy; this resource the Americans now turned toward their own ends. Fowler describes how a small group of delegates to Congress, led by John Adam s an d str on gly su ppo rted by Washington, labored to form a powerful fighting fleet. He describes the difficulty of enlisting men for the navy (they preferred to sail on privateers where they could reap rich rewards from capturing enemy vessel s) , th e jock eyi ng f or c omma nd by captains, the building of ships in shipyards all up and down the coast. The fledgling navy made some terrible blunders - most notably the disastrous Penobscot expedition which cost the Americans dearly - but it also en joyed mom ents of gr eat g lory, particularly under its greatest commander, John Paul Jones. Fowler describes both the failures and the successes, and he surveys the story not just of the navy itself but of the privateers and merchant s hip s tha t f ought along side it." Light wrinkling and edge wear at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has slight edge browning on inside, light wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Very Good/Very Good
