THE ALTERATION., Amis, Kingsley.
1 Amis, Kingsley. THE ALTERATION.
London Jonathan Cape 1976 022401305X / 9780224013055 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Tom Adams, dust jacket art.
208 pp, 8" H. "It is 1976, but things are not the same. Due to a slight alteration in history involving Catherine of Aragon, Martin Luther, Thomas More and others, a Holy Victory was won in an event called the War of the English Succession, and today England, like most of the world, is virtually ruled by a Machiavellian Pope who hails from Yorkshire. Piety is rampant, science is a forbidden word and New England is a wild abode of exile for Schismatics and common criminals. Hubert Anvil is simply the best boy singer in living memory, and the Abbot is soon to propose that he undergo a simple operation to preserve his heavenly voice at the cost of his earthly pleasure. Hubert's pious father agrees to the 'alteration', reassuring the boy that his voice is a special gift from God and that, as he will never experience manhood, he won't miss it. Hubert's more wayward mother is forced to admit that the love of men and women, though less exalted than the love of God, is a very powerful force indeed, and the family confessor, who is also her lover and an overbold foe of authority, has to agree. With his suspicions aroused that the glory of God may not be much compensation for what he will be missing - Hubert plans his escape - into a world where to be a runaway is a dangerous crime and a deadly sin." Front pastedown is trimmed to edge of front board instead of being inset from edge, slight fading to color on top of text blcok near spine, tiny bump at bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very minor edge wear/wrinkling.

The only firm criterion for inclusion was that the subject at some point in his life lived in the Hamilton area. The biographies reveal the early communities of the bay and the escarpment from early settlement, through war and rebellion to the emerging community of the mid and late ni n e t e e n t h century. The figures included represent a broad cross-section of life: politicians, clergy, merchants, settlers, actors, artists, and even criminals. These, then, are the men and women of the region's fascinating past." An A-Z c ov er in g Ha mi lt on biography from its origins to 1875. This manual is by no means 'all inclusive'. However, as one who has researched this subject in depth during the past six years, I will say it is the most definitive and complete manual know to me at this time. THE WASHINGTON STING., Conconi, Charles and House, Toni.
7 Conconi, Charles and House, Toni. THE WASHINGTON STING.
Coward, McCann & Geoghegan, New York, 1979, second impression.
255 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Here is the dramatic and only inside account of the undercover police-FBI fencing operation - featuring cops in the guise of syndicate soldiers - whose stunning success put the 'Washington Sting' in headlines across the nation. Word was out on the street in Washington, D.C., that one of the best fences in years was working out of a warehouse on 25th Place, NE. PFF Inc., run by 'mob-connected' Italians, was buyi n g u p s t o len guns, office equipment, anything with resale value. Thieves all over the Washington area were soon submitting to the hard dealing of the gun-wielding Mafiosi, looking for quick cash and an association with the mighty aristocracy o f c ri me . As t he fence's main man, Pasquale Larocca, critically examined the typewriter or rifle offered across his bulletproof counter, and in one corner Mike Franzino cradled his shotgun in casual warning, there was no suspicion of a weapo n d ea dl y i n a d i ffe ren t way: a videotape machine which recorded every transaction from behind an unnoticed one-way mirror. 'Pasquale Larocca' and 'Mike Franzino' were the aliases of two of the undercover team of police and FBI men organize d to fi ght Was hing ton 's hig h la rceny statistics down at the underworld source. And five months after the opening of 'Police-FBI Fencing, Incognito' - five months of tense bargaining with suspicious professionals and comic encounters with f awnin g fl unki es an d pro stit ute s - t he fe nce closed around more than 200 criminals invited to meet a New York 'Don' at a party hosted by Larocca. They met, instead, with police. The single account of the caper written with the cooperation of the poli ce an d FBI and wi th fu ll a ccess to the incriminating videotapes, here is a true story of police politics and mayhem, streetwise ingenuity and volatile temperaments, told to authentic narrative effect with complete, uncensored detai l." 200 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Shirley Ryce) tells of her upbringing as the spoiled daughter of a local bookie and card-game organizer, of her early marriage, and of the fateful meeting that turned a bored housewife and mother into a mob mistress. (She) moved in organized crime circles for almost two decades, and had many mob affairs. Although she knew little of the mobsters' 'business', she saw a great deal of the mob at play. Her break with the Papalias (Hamilton, Ontario crime family) and their cohorts, and her co-operation with the police, marked a dramatic change in ther life, and in 'Mob Mistress' she looks back at who and what she was with self-deprecating frankness. At the same time, she and Dubro both give an informed and clear-eyed view of her former 'playmates' - and of the law-enforcement officers who fight them daily." Faber and Faber, London, 1983, first edition.
202 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0571131115 "This is the fourth in Lawrence Durrell's current sequence of novels, following 'Contance', which was short-listed for the Booker Prize. What Mr Durrell calls his 'quincunx' can now b e seen emerging as an Avignon quintet, more and more recognizably linked with the themes and characters of 'The Alexandria Quartet'. In 'Sebastian' the locale is principally Geneva, picking up from the close of 'Constance', and as the sto r y u n f o l d s what were enigmas become revelations, and what seemed brilliant patchwork becomes a cunning woven tapestry. The relationship of Constance and Affad is under threat, and they realize they are heading for a fearful crisis; while h er p r of es si on al p ra ctice as a clinical psychiatrist involves her in the patient healing of an autistic child = her lover's son - and the handling of a dangerous criminal psychopath. These intertwined episodes are as full of tender insight nd el ec tri fyi ng mel odr ama as anything Mr Durrell has ever written." Two small faint soiling marks on top of textblock. Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1988.
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297793934 B&w illustrations. "From 1740 to 1832, freshly buried corpses were dug up and surreptitiously hawked to surgeons and anatomists in London and Edinburgh to dissect for research and teaching purposes. The resurrection trade brought together Fellows of the Royal Society and slum-dwelling criminals in an unholy alliance. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, the illicit trade had become one of London's most effic i e n t l y o rganized departments of crime, with gang-leader Ben Crouch securing a virtual monopoly of delivery to half the teaching hospitals. In Scotland, several surgeons of great eminence loved the adventure of association with desperadoes and w il li ng ly a c co mpanied them on their nocturnal excavations. Not surprisingly, there was great public consternation about the activities of the bodysnatchers, but it was only when Burke and Hare introduced murder as a means of acquiring 'sub jec ts' th at the au th ori ties acted to eradicate the ghoulish practice. Martin Fido's book is an enthralling study of a strange byway of criminal low life. It provides the first full and accurate accounts of murderers Helen Torrence and Jean Wald ie, Bish op and Head an d El iza Ross. With sketches of the great surgeons who encouraged and sought to control the trade, 'Bodysnatchers' will interest many in the medical profession and social historians as well as devotees of the true crim e gen re." University of Texas Press, Austin, 1981.
211 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0292780400 Tables. "In her investigation of the social history of the common British soldier in the era of the American Revolution, Sylvia Frey has extensively surveyed recruiting reco rds, contemporary training manuals, statutes, and memoirs in an attempt to provide insight into the soldier's 'life and mind'. In the process she has discovered more about the common soldier than anyone thought possible: his size, age, an d g e n e r a l physical condition, his personal economics and daily existence. Her findings dispel the traditional assumpution that the army was made up largely of criminals and social misfits. Special attention is given to soldiering as an occ up a ti on . F oc us in g on two of the major campaigns of the war....Frey describes the human face of war, with particular emphasis on the physical and psychic strains of campaigning in the eighteenth century. Perhaps the most important part of the w ork is t he ana lys is of the moral and material factors which induced men to accept the high risks of soldiering. Frey rejects the traditional assumption that soldiers were motivated to fight exclusively by fear and force and argues inst ead tha t th e pr ima ry moti vati on to battle was generated by regimental esprit, which in the eighteenth century substituted for patriotism. After analyzing the sources of esprit, she concludes that it was the sustaining force for morale in a lo ng a nd d iscou ragin g wa r. This book is a contribution to our understanding of the eighteenth century and should appeal not only to military historians but also to social and economic historians and to those interested in the history of medic ine." 311 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "October 17, 1898, en route to Paris's Gare du Nord station, the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland's jewels were stolen from her train carriage. More than forty pieces, worth nearly 2 million Pounds today, disappeared that night, and the perpetrator along with them. It would become one of the most widely reported heists of the late Victorian era, but what no one knew was that the man who committed this most daring and well-planned theft had already committed nine almost identical crimes. A man who wore bespoke suits and handmade shoes; who used a dozen pseudonyms to dust over his tracks; who belonged to three smart London clubs and lived in the luxury of West End hotels; whose staple diet was champagne and whisky; who was pursued by London's top detectives for five and a half years and - by their own admission - proved smarter than them. A man who fell so much in love with a woman that he would steal and lie for her, only to be betrayed by her." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has some areas of very light edge wrinkling.

"Since the North-West Mounted Police first rode onto the plains in 1874 the Force's duties and responsibilities have undergone many changes. In recognition of its services, the prefix 'Royal' was added to its title in 1904 by King Edward VII. Sixteen years later, when it became responsible for federal policing throughout Canada, it was changed again to 'Royal Canadian Mounted Police'. In these early reports readers will find first hand accounts of many of the stirring incidents which shaped the history of the West, written by those who actually participated in them. The Indian Treaties, the influx of the American Sioux under Sitting Bull, the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, the North-West Rebellion, and the coming of the settlers are just a few of the dramatic events in which the North-West Mounted Police played an important part." 668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." 207 pp, 8vo (8" H). "(A) brilliant collection of Michael Innes short stories about the varied adventures of his great detective, Sir John Appleby, Commissioner of Metropolitan Police (and, later, retired). Appleby has to cope with many diabolically ingenious modes of crime: a faked poltergeist; an exploding antique; a balloon to remove a weapon; an arrow to obliterate a trail. Many of the clues that lead to solutions are equally remarkable: a shubunkin in a pocket; the overpainting of a portrait; photocopies that have stuck together; a broken wine-glass; a coat worn inside-out; a London taxi-cab on the Simplon Pass. And the plots involve elaborate double bluffs: suicides designed to look like murders; X disguised as Y disguised as X; and in 'The Memorial Service' the tangle of impersonation develops into a triple - or is it a quadruple? - bluff." Contents: The Appleby File: The Ascham; Poltergeist; The Fishermen; The Conversation Piece; Death By Water; A Question of Confidence; The Memorial Service. Appleby's Holidays: Two on a Tower; Beggar With Skull; The Exploding Battleship; The Body in the Glen; Death in the Sun; Cold Blood; The Coy Mistress; The Thirteenth Priest Hole.
