"When the passenger liner 'City of Benares' sailed from Liverpool on Friday, 13 September 1940 she was carrying 90 evacuee children from the bombed cities of Brit ain, bound under a government-sponsored scheme for a safe haven in Canada. Her sinking by U-boat four days later, without warning, in total disregard of the plight of survivors and in defiance of international law, shocked and horrified the c i v i l i s ed world. Of 406 people on board 256 were lost - including, at first count, 83 of the evacuee children. In Britain and the Commonwealth the reaction was one of righteous indignation, accompanied by an intense desire for retribution. At the beginning of the war bush pilots, barnstormers, commercial pilots, crop-dusters, amateur aviators, and First World War veterans were called up to begin the huge task of training. Most of their students went to the front, but some were kept in Canada to instruct the next generation of recruits. At its peak, the plan administered 107 schools and 184 other units at 231 sites across Canada, operated 11,000 aircraft, and employed 104,000 men and women. During World War Two, the cruiser became one of the mo st illustrious warships of all time, achieving twelve honours. In 1940, she fought in the action off Cape Spartivento; in the following year she shared in the audacious bombardment of Genoa, exchanged salvoes with Bismarck and sank one of that bat t leship's supply tankers, Friedrich Breme. In the Arctic a mine blew a 22-foot hole in her stern, but in an Icelandic fjord her crew fashioned a makeshift timber patch before steaming her back to Britain to fight again. In 1942, in the Barents Se a, Sheffield was in action against the 'pocket battleships' Admiral Hipper and Lutzow, and sank the German destroyer Friedrich Eckoldt. "Morale is as important to a nation in peace as it is in war, on the factory floor and in an office as in a warship or a bomber's crew, in a trade union as in a regiment. In our complex, unstable times, it is vital that we should seek to understand more of morale, what it can attain and how it can be achieved. For this reason alone John Bayne's fascinating sociological study would be an inva luable contribution to the literature of an alarmingly neglected subject. But Major Baynes has a uique and rewarding approach. He has taken a sample community of proven morale and then dissected it tissue by tissue, examining each under t h e m i c r o s cope of his keenly analytical and lively mind. His 'sample' is the 2nd Scottish Rifles, a battalion of that magnificent professional Army with which Britain entered the First World War. "During the evening of 19 December 1963 the twin-screw Motor Ship 'Lakonia' slid through the grey waters of the Solent, bound for sunshine and warmer seas. Her hull and superstructure gleamed like 'a newly iced Christmas cake, for she had been recently overhauled and completely redecorated'. (651) passengers were aboard the liner for her Christmas cruise --- The 'Lakonia' began to burn on Sunday, 22 Decem b e r . Four days later she was a pitiful, smoke-grimed wreck, wallowing at the mercy of the waves. On Sunday, 29 December - just a week after the initial diaster - she slid beneath the waters of the North Atlantic to her last resting-place. (Th is ) is t he story of unfortunate, originally minor circumstances, slowly building up until they finally overwhelmed the ship, her crew and passengers. However, within the ranks of the RAF itself, some individuals stood out gaining high reputations for their courage and leadership, a respect achieved regardless of the decorations they had won or the number of sorties flown. "Practically everyone knows of HMS Cossack's mag nificent exploit in a Norwegian fiord in February 1940 when her crew rescued 299 captive British merchant seamen from the Altmark. Cossack was just one of 27 Tribal Class destroyers which served in the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian an d C a n a d i an Navies from 1938 to 1969. They were considered by many to be the finest of their type. The Tribals probably saw more acion over a longer period of time, and over a greater area of the globe, than any other class of destroyer. "Born and educated in Toronto, Robert Buckham was employed as a graphic artist in several studios in Toronto and as an art director in a Montreal advertising agency prior to enlisting in the RCAF. Twice rejected for aircrew because of his height (he is 6/4"), he was finally accepted for pilot training in May of 1941. He was posted overseas in early 1942 and eventually joined 428 Squadron, 6 Group, based in Dalton, Yorkshire, where he flew Wellington X bombers over Germany and German-occupied France. His aircraft was downed on April 8, 1943, on his tenth operational flight. He and his entire crew were captured. Imprisoned in Stalag Luft 3, Sagan, Germany, (he) recorded the scene in small drawings and paintings, which were eventually rolled and carried on two forced marches in a tube created from soldered Klimcans. The forced marches brought (him) to Stalag 8B, Lubeck, where he was finally liberated." Tiny bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine, minor rubbing.
