282 pp, lg 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, maps. "The author was a squadron and wing intelligence officer and kept long and detailed diaries of the day to day life in the Desert Group, and on these the book is largely based. The result is a vivid and realistic picture of the Desert atmosphere; he commu-nicates the tenseness during the nights when the Wellingtons were away on missions, the crashes, the accidents, the debriefings, and the dreaded sandstorms. He recaptures the excitement of the perilous operations, some of which he flew on himself, as well as the lighter moments during stand downs and leave periods. This is an outstanding contribution to aviation history, conveying as it does not only individual heroisms but the corporateness of a squadron in wartime." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkle.

AVRO SHACKLETON. POSTWAR MILITARY AIRCRAFT: 3., Chartres, John.
8 Chartres, John. AVRO SHACKLETON. POSTWAR MILITARY AIRCRAFT: 3.
Ian Allan, Shepperton, Surrey, 1999, reprint.
112 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711015139 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings. "The Avro Shackleton completed 40 years of front-line service in the Royal Air Force. The first prototype (in shape an d concept a direct descendent of the Manchester-Lancaster-Lincoln-Tudor lineage) first flew in 1949, and the AEW aircraft of No 8 Squadron were still operational in the early 1990s. The aircraft undoubtedly marked the end of an era of the R A F ' s f o u r-piston-engined 'heavies', although it remained in service for nearly 30 years after it was first classified as obsolete. Built originally for anti-submarine warfare, the Shackleton had been used by the RAF for other roles, includ in g se ar ch an d re scue, colonial policing, troop and freight carrying, supplying weather ships, maritime surveillance and showing the flag....the author not only traces the Shackleton's origins and activities in many different roles but brings out t he dee p a f fec ti on felt for the type by both air and ground crews in spite of the arduous and sometimes perilous nature of the operations in which it had been involved. This book was first published in 1985 and statements made then were curr ent . Many of th ese may we ll have been overtaken by subsequent events." Dust jacket has fading to the spine colour - lettering still bright. Fine/Very Good

177 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(R)econstructs America's first era of manned flight and brings back to life the famous and less-known aviators who became the nation's heroes: Charles Lindberg, whose achievement was the great event of the 1920s - Amelia Earhart, one of the many women 'aces' (the aviation industry encouraged women because, as pilot Louise Thaden put it, 'If a woman can handle a plane, the public thinks it must be 'duck soup' for men.') - Calbraith P. Rogers, who made the first transcontinental flight, surviving a dozen crashes, a broken arm and collarbone, and a score of wounds caused by the metal fragments of an exploded engine - and many others. The book provides a vivid picture of America in the first half of the century - its aspirations and concerns - as expressed in the exuberant and often utopian response to a major new technology." Part One, on the other hand, is an attempt to look at the aircraft from a different angle, not so much the fighter pilot's glamorous view but the day-to-day operations, trials and tribulations and the joys and delights of a ground crew struggling to come to terms with an aircraft that was, in many ways, a quantum leap in technology. Suffering from exhaustion and on the verge of collapse, he found a hot spring that provided him with temporary warmth and ins ects to ea t. WHO KILLED THE CANADIAN MILITARY?, Granatstein, J.L.
17 Granatstein, J.L. WHO KILLED THE CANADIAN MILITARY?
Toronto Phyllis Bruce / HarperFlamingo 2004 0002006758 / 9780002006750 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
250 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). "With tragic helicopter crashes and out-of-date equipment, our military lurches towards irrelevance as our politicians dither. Our personnel are stretched far too thinly and are ill-prepared for the battlefield or increasingly dangerous peacekeeping. In truth, we rank 34th among nations in the provision of UN peacekeeping troops. And since 9/11 and the Iraq War, the United States is seriously re-evaluating our ability to defend our half of North America against terrorism. J.L. Granatstein argues that we are all too willing to hide behind anti-American sentiment, while ignoring the reality that we Canadians have failed our military. Who are the killers of the Canadian army, navy and air force? Granatstein fingers a series of governments since the Second World War who have never understood our military heritage and who have drained military expenditures for years. From Pierre Trudeau to Brian Mulroney to Jean Cretien, (this book) is a catalogue of prime ministers who have never supported adequate military spending. But Granatstein also places blame on ordinary Canadians who have allowed such changes to take place while clinging to the myth that we are the ultimate global peacekeepers. How can we expect the men and women of the Canadian forces to risk their lives for us when we are not prepared to protect and support them in turn? Here is an articulate and impassioned argument for a well- trained, well-funded military so that we can take our place among those who defend freedom in this century." Minor rubbing on boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

London Hodder and Stoughton 1973 0340173971 / 9780340173978 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Tom Wardill, jacket art.
224 pp, 8" H. "The announcement of Paul Dexter's promotion to Commander in Her Majesty's Royal Navy reached him on the first day of January 1934 after the dreariest Christmas he'd every experienced. The trouble was that after they'd given him the appointment the Navy didn't seem to be able to find anything for him to do. Eventually they sent him on a course, and it was then that he saved the life of a Rear-Admiral when their plane crashed into the sea. If he'd left him to drown life might subsequently have been easier; as it was, when he was fully recovered, young Dexter found himself posted to Gibraltar under the Rear-Admiral's command. Somebody should have warned him about Gibraltar." Dust jacket has light edge wear wrinkling, bump at bottom of flap-folds, very light soiling and a faint stain on rear panel, a few tiny dents on hinges.

Dundurn, Toronto, 2008, first edition.
171 pp, square soft cover (8" x 8"). B&w photographs. ISBN 9781550028515 "A crab boat off Newfoundland catches fire, and a dangerous rescue is undertaken by helicopter. A child goes missing in a New Brunswick forest, and a desperate hunt is mounted. A commercial helicopter crashes in Nunavut, and a search and rescue team braves a savage snowstorm to save the pilot. (This book) features the above thrilling accounts and many more from across the country, past and present. Its heroes are to be found in the RCMP, city police forces, the Canadian military, and among all the rescue workers and specialists of the C anadian Coast Guard - volunteers, too, risk injury and even death to help others. Sidebars highlight the equipment search and rescue teams use, how search dogs are trained, how long-line rescues work, how navy divers are making a difference in the deserts of Afghanistan, and the meaning of terms such as emergency position-indicating radio beacons, Maydays, datum lines, and much more."
