1 Birrell, Andrew. BENJAMIN BALTZLY. PHOTOGRAPHS & JOURNALS OF AN EXPEDITION THROUGH BRITISH COLUMBIA: 1871.
Toronto Coach House Press 1978 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Benjamin Baltzly, photographer.
159 pp, oblong (9" H x 10 3/4" D). Illustrated with 71 of Baltzly's magnificent b&w photographs, plus a folded map (on thin tissue paper) - "Detail of map of British Columbia drawn by Joseph Trutch, 1871". "(B)rings together for the first time the photographs and journal of Benjamin Baltzly from his trip through British Columbia in 1871. Baltzly was a talented photographer working in the Montreal studio of William Notman. His trip to British Columbia was made with a party sent out by the Geological Survey of Canada to examine the geology along one of the proposed routes for the Canadian Pacific Railway - the North Thompson River through the Yellowhead Pass. Although a few of Baltzly's photographs have appeared in print, they have never been examined as a body. His journal, which appeared in 'The Gazette' of Montreal in 1872, is one of the very few written records left by Canadian photographers of the (19th) century. The photographs are probably the earliest taken of the rugged British Columbia interior." Two very small ink smudges on title page, tiny ink mark at bottom edge of rear pastedown. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, light wrinkle at bottom of spine and tiny tear at nottom of rear hinge.

William Collins of London, MCMXXXXIV (1944).
48 pp, 8 15/16" H, hard cover in dust jacket. 8 colour plates, 21b&w illustrations. "In this book (C.V. Wedgwood) has chosen, after a brilliant general survey of her subject, to describe the most important battles which have taken place in Britain - the battle of Hastings, Edghill, Marston Moor, Killiecrankie, Dunbar - up to the last battle of all, the Battle of Britain. The stories of these battles are fascinating and exciting and the qualities of the great leaders - of Harold, Rupe r t , M o n trose, Fairfax, Cromwell, Dundee - are freshly presented within this limited focus. Most people have at some time stood on the site of an old battlefield and wished to have a clearer and more accurate picture of the historic event than h is k n ow le dg e could command. This Miss Wedgwood now makes possible, and the reader of the book will look at Maiden Castle and the field of Naseby and all the sites of our historic battles with reawakened interest and pride." Dust jacket has very light edge wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light browning on spine and on some inside edges. Very Good/Very Good
