3 Charbonneau-Lassay, Louis. Translated/abridged by D.M. Dooling. THE BESTIARY OF CHRIST.

467 pp, 9" H. B&w illustrations. "A legendary work of religious scholarship and art history, available in English for the first time. This extraordinary - and extraordinarily beautiful - volume introduces readers to a compendium of animal symbolism that ranks with the greatest of classical and medieval bestiaries. (It) was the life's work of the French Catholic scholar Louis Charbonneau-Lessay, who combed the religious traditions of ancient Egypt, classical Greece and Rome, early and medieval Christianity, Gnosticism, Kabbalah, and alchemy to research it. First published in France at the outbreak of World War II and nearly destroyed in the war's devastations, this masterpiece of scholarship has been translated and abridged (from its original thousand-page length) by D.M. Dooling, the founder and editorial director of 'Parabola: The Magazine of Myth and Tradition', and includes 400 woodcuts by the author." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - remainder mark on top of text block.

4 Crispin, Edmund. THE GLIMPSES OF THE MOON.
London Gollancz 1978 0575022590 / 9780575022591 Fourth Impression Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
287 pp, 8vo (8" H). "In and around a very English village, murder follows murder, and corpse is piled upon corpse. Fen, whom Crispin fans will remember well, is once again the man who finally sorts out the very intricate puzzle; but for much of the book he is an accessory after the fact, and in a peculiarly gruesome manner. The Rector, the Major, and even old Gobbo, take a hand at playing detective, much to the confusion of Detective-Superintendant Ling. And the lively yarn culminates in a chase to end all chases - involving the local hunt, hunt saboteurs, a herd of rampaging cows, a motor-cycle scramble, a runaway burglar, a team of bloody-minded engineers, the major on horseback, and the police, variously motivated." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few tiny foxing marks on top of text block at spine, previous owner's name in ink on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, soft crease at top of front panel.

Winnipeg, Manitoba Queenston House 1980 0919866417 / 9780919866416 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
111 pp, 8 7/8" H. B&w drawings. "Howard Dundas casts an irreverent eye on many of the sacred cows of yesteryear. With humorous insights, he lays bare many of the underlying assumptions so dear to our forefathers. He touches on many issues which are still current in the West: colonial attitudes, male chauvinism, the French fact in Manitoba, the revolution in social and sexual mores. Mentioned in passing are the deals past governments made with the CPR and the HBC, to say nothing of the exploitation of Westerners for Eastern interests. Whether Dundas stretches the truth or not, what matters is that he expresses the feelings of the average intelligent Winnipeg citizen growing up and learning in the most lively and witty of Canadian cities." Faint erased pencil marks at top of front free endpaper, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling; light browning to spine, flap-folds and top edge; old tape at inside of top/bottom of spine and flap-folds - some small tears; tiny scuff on rear flap-fold.

Portland, Oregon Binfords and Mort 1941 First Edition Hard Cover Good Fair Norma Madge Lyon & Harold L. Price.

No number is inserted. Pictorial map endpapers, color illustrations throughout. "Paul Bunyan is America's very own folk character. He did not spring from the legends of our English ancestors, nor from the Indian myths, but like America herself - of which he is a symbol - he just grew. Paul, like our countrymen, started on the East coast - in the Maine woods to be exact. As the nation grew, so did Paul and Babe, his faithful Blue Ox. Their first westward move was to the land of Hiawatha and the Great Lakes. Paul in his enthusiasm thought the great White Pine forests of Michigan and Wisconsin would last forever; but alas, they were soon exhausted, due to fire and wasteful exploitation. More careful this time, but still filled with a mighty urge for Logging - Paul went south into the Long Pine country. He even made the Mississippi his own private waterway, but again he and Babe got the wanderlust. This time they headed for the great Douglas Fir forest of the Pacific Northwest. Like the nation of which he is the symbol, Paul found this last western frontier a satisfying and soul stirring challenge. Here he and Babe could do more than Logging. Here were canals to dig, Bridges to construct, Dams to erect, Mountains and Glaciers to conquer. At last, 'Paul Bunyan the Work Giant' - like America, has come of age." Very small area of ink offset at top corner of free front endpaper (from dust jacket flap), book is slightly cracked at a few places, book is lightly cocked, bump at bottom corner of boards, light edge wear, one page leaf has small finger print smudges at top & bottom corners. Dust jacket has price inked out on front fla; has edge wear with tears, chips and creases; moderate soiling; a few tiny scuffs; large chip at bottom of spine and front hinge; 2" old tape stain on inside surface.
