6 David, Jennifer, ed. Foreword by Hon. William G. Davis. WIND, WATER, ROCK AND SKY: THE STORY OF COGNASHENE, GEORGIAN BAY.
Toronto Cognashene Book Corporation 1997 0968189504 / 9780968189504 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good + Very Good-
191 pp, oblong (9 3/4" H x 11 3/4" D). Map endpapers, b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "In the spectacular expanse of wind, water, rock and sky that is Georgian Bay, there is only one Cognashene . Historically rich, geographically gorgeous, shaped by colourful characters and events, Cognashene's allure is as powerful today as it was for the first hardy souls to arrive at its scenic shores. (This book) celebrates the uniquely Canadian island community and traces its dramatic journey from its native roots, through its industrial development to its days of pioneer settlement. In these pages you'll meet Champlain and his young protege, Etienne Brule. You'll find out what it took to be a success - or a failure! - in the lumber days. You can settle in for a visit at Longuissa, Whalen's or Blarney Castle, or, if it's Sunday - and you're so inclined - stop by the Church on the Rocks. And you'll discover throughout the breathtaking beauty that has captivated countless artists, including A.Y. Jackson and other members of the Group of Seven. Part historical document, part warm-hearted slice-of-cottage-life, (it) reveals a distinctive and winning personality. It is, quite simply, the essence of Cognashene." New York Dorset 1992 0880297182 / 9780880297189 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
352 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(O)ffers a very different kind of tour to the armchair traveler. Wander through the haunted castles and cottages of Europe with Hans Holzer, the world's most famous psychic investigator, and explore a full range of psychic phenomena from the spirits of the British Isles to the haunts of Imperial Vienna. In England, Anne Boleyn's legendary ghost walks headless within the Tower of London; a procession of transparent monks appears in the Cathedral of Winchester, where no monks have trod since the sixteenth century; and Bloody Queen Mary still visits the four-poster bed where she slept in the dark days of 1553. At Kilkea Castle in Kildare, it is said that the Wizard Earl and his companions ride at night and will return someday from the beyond to 'put things right in Ireland'. Room No. 2 in the Hotel de l'Europe in Avignon holds a shocking surprise for the unwary guest; and in Paris, No. 3 avenue Montaigne offers a special concert of ghostly piano music from a spectral grand. Ghost occur wherever great tragedy has left an unfortunate person stranded between the next world and this one, someone who has not yet been freed from their emotional turmoil. The true accounts presented in this book are based on Dr. Holzer's personal investigations." One page leaf with two very small scollops at fore-edge. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor browning to inside edges.

This is the story of the profound effect this building has had on the Muskoka region, from its earliest days in the Aitken family, through its terrible destruction and miraculous rise from the ashes. The story unfolds through the memories of family, guests and former staff members, who recount the inner workings of the resort, its idiosyncrasies and its appeal. 176 pp, oblong 8vo (8 3/4" H x 11 1/4" D). B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. SIGNED AND DATED BY AUTHOR ON HALF TITLE PAGE. "During the latter years of the nineteenth century St. Andrews was 'discovered' by a wealthy few who sought a summer place by the sea. Escaping from Boston, Montreal, St. Louis, Toronto and elsewhere, they bought, rented, or built houses, returning year after year as their children did in turn. Luxurious hotels such as 'The Argyll' and 'The Algonquin' - advertising 'no hay fever' and good rail connections - were built to serve them, and a summer society was established: riding, sailing, playing tennis and croquet, dining, dancing, and gossiping. Fathers of Confederation like Sir Leonard Tilley and Sir Charles Tupper, the great railway builders Sir William Van Horne and Lord Shaughnessy, financiers like Sir James Dunn, politicians from Senator Cairine Wilson and C.D. Howe to John Turner, were joined in St. Andrews by socialites and possessors of 'old money' from both Canada and the United States. (This book) records the achievements and oddities of the people who made up this small but distinctive society and describes the 'cottages' in which they spent those summers by the sea." Previous owner's name on free front endpaper, small light soiling mark at fore-edge of free rear endpaper. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor edge wrinkling.
