London Unwin Hyman, London, (1987), Ist edition. 1987 0713526610 / 9780713526615 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 10 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(P)rovides a lively picture of contrasting courtly scenes through the ages. It takes us from the paralysingly formal Court of Queen Anne to the outlandish ostentation of fifty years later when the Prince of Wales's dancing feet twinkled with 30,000 Pounds worth of diamonds attached to his shoe buckles. It conjures up the social butterflies of the Victorian age and a young debutante in the 1920's having difficulty tucking the essential three white feathers into her fashionably bobbed hair style. The fairy tale dresses and gold encrusted uniforms described and illustrated in this book have echoed or defied the fashions of the world right up to the present day. The last debutante to be presented at Court left Buckingham Palace in 1958, but in ceremonies such as the State Opening of Parliament courtly costume and tradition still linger with us." Spine is slightly twisted, minor toning on pastedowns. Dust jacket has light wear at bottom of front flap-fold, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of rear panel, very soft crease down rear panel.

A DICTIONARY OF THEATRE ANTHROPOLOGY: THE SECRET ART OF THE PERFORMER., Barba, Eugenio and Savarese, Nicola. Translated by Richard Fowler.
4 Barba, Eugenio and Savarese, Nicola. Translated by Richard Fowler. A DICTIONARY OF THEATRE ANTHROPOLOGY: THE SECRET ART OF THE PERFORMER.
London Routledge for the Centre of Performance Research 1995 0415053080 / 9780415053082 Reprint Soft Cover Very Good+
272 pp, 11 5/8" H. "(S)ubtly juxtaposes the visual demonstrations of the performer's craft, from a wealth of Oriental and Occidental sources, to uncover knowledge of action in the heightened context of performance - from combat to religion and ritual. Whereas most Western research is concerned with naturalism and psychological realism in acting, the Dictionary focuses on the performer's arduous and eclectic craft. More than just a dictionary, however, it is a handbook for theatre practitioners and a guide for students and scholars of transcultural performance. It is a result of ten years' research conducted by Eugenio Barba and the International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA) based in Denmark. ISTA works with practitioners of theatre and dance from the major Oriental and Occidental traditions to study the underlying principles of the performer's technique. The Dictionary aims to expand our knowledge of the possibilities of the scenic body, and of the spectator's response to the dynamics of performance. (It) has practical sections on balance, opposition and montage, among other techniques, and discusses issues including 'The Text and the Stage', 'The Dilated Body', and 'Energetic Language'. The visual essay of photographs, drawings and diagrams which runs parallel to the text is skilfully constructed to complement the textual argument. The result is not only a lavishly illustrated sourcebook on Western and non-Western theatre - much of it until now little known - but an inspiring tribute to the secret art of the performer." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - tiny dint on fore-edge of text block, old stock label on rear cover, minor rubbing.

ZERO TOLLERANCE: AN INTIMATE MEMOIR BY THE MAN WHO REVOLUTIONIZED FIGURE SKATING., Cranston, Toller. With Martha Lowder Kimball.
12 Cranston, Toller. With Martha Lowder Kimball. ZERO TOLLERANCE: AN INTIMATE MEMOIR BY THE MAN WHO REVOLUTIONIZED FIGURE SKATING.
McClelland & Stewart, Toronto, 1997, first edition.
352 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771023340 B&w photographs. "Toller Cranston is: six-time Canadian figure-skating champion, celebrity, costume designer, artist extraordinaire, broadcaster, choreographer of skating ro utines, raconteur, bon vivant, coach, world traveller, art collector, legend and enigma. In 1976 he won Olympic bronze (so why did it feel like defeat?). This book tells the story of his life after those fateful games at Innsbruck. The r i s e a n d f all of Toller's first professional ice show is described in soul-searing detail. His subsequent triumphant tour of Europe as the Skater of the Century is recounted, in contrast, with wicked humour. There are vignettes here of his e nc ou nt e rs w it h t he rich and famous from Leonard Bernstein to Pierre Cardin and of his life among Europe's aristocrats and bohemians. Toller has experienced the high life and the low. He has stayed in the most luxurious hotels, held court in pal ati al ho use s, so ugh t seclusion in beautiful estates. But the hard times took their toll. In the early 1990s a combination of circumstances, including a disatrous professional association with out-of-control American skater Christopher Bo wman and a laws uit tha t d ragg ed on for years (ending in complete victory for Toller), led to a personal crisis from which recovery came slowly. But even in the blackest hours, Toller's humour and creative powers never deserted him....an e xtra ordin ary s elf -port rait wri tten by a uniquely gifted individual. Toller's wit, insight, and delicious way with words will entertain and astound readers whether they are skating fans or not." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling. Near Fine/N ear Fi ne

13 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." Dust jacket has a few areas of very minor edge wrinkling.

20 Hartley, Cecil B. Introduction by G. Mercer Adam. THE LIFE OF DANIEL BOONE, THE FOUNDER OF THE STATE OF KENTUCKY. STORIES OF FAMOUS AMERICAN HEROES SERIES.
Grosset & Dunlap, New York, n.d.
385 pp, 8vo (8 5/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Pictorial endpapers, colour frontispiece. "The subject of the following biography, the celebrated Colonel Daniel Boone, is one of the most remarkable men which this country has produced. His cha racter is marked with originality, and his actions were important and influential in one of the most interesting periods of our history - that of the early settlement of Kentucky. Boone is generally acknowledged as the founder of that State . H i s h aving explored it alone to a considerable extent; his leading the earliest bands of settlers; his founding Boonesborough, the nucleus of the future State; his having defended this and other stations successfully against the attacks of th e I nd ia ns ; a nd the prominent part which he took in military affairs at this period of distress and peril, certainly render his claims to the distinguished honor of founding Kentucky very strong. But Boone, personally, reaped very little bene fi t f rom hi s p at rio tic and disinterested exertions. The lands which he had first cultivated and defended, were taken from him by the chicanery of the law; other lands granted to him by the Spanish government were lost by his inattention to le gal f or ms; and in h is old age he was without an acre of land which he could call his own. A few years before his death a small tract, such as any other settler in Missouri was entitled to, was granted him by Congress. But he has left to his nu mero us pos teri ty a nobl er inhe ritance - that of an imperishable fame in the annals of his country!"
