NAPOLEON ON NAPOLEON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE EMPEROR., Bonaparte, Napoleon. Edited by Somerset de Chair.
2 Bonaparte, Napoleon. Edited by Somerset de Chair. NAPOLEON ON NAPOLEON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE EMPEROR.
Brockhampton, London, 1998, reprint.
288 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1860198767 B&w and colour illustrations. "During the six years of exile on St Helena, between Waterloo and his death, Napoleon dictated momoirs, notes, letters and battle commentaries to the generals who shared his captivity. He then corrected the material himself. Napoleon used his time in captivity to explain the motives, beliefs and doubts that drove him; to analyse strategies which turned France's Revolution into the French Em pire and examine the tactics that made the Grand Army masters of Europe. He recorded his birth at Ajaccio in 1769, and his genteel but impoverished Corsican childhood. He notes his entry at the age of 10 to the military school in Briennes, a n d h i s own early enthusiasm for the Revolution, which lessened in the face of the Terror...In this book, (the editor) has incorporated much new material from three further volumes of notes and miscellanies dictated by Napoleon at St Helena, i n ad di t io n to the four volumes of Memoirs published in 1823. As before, he has let Napoleon speak in the first person throughout, rather than in the more formal third person of the original text. The result is a fascinating account of Napoleo n' s l ife i n h is ow n words, from his childhood in Corsica to his defeat in Waterloo in 1815. Private concerns, such as feuds with his brothers and divorce from Josephine, are mixed with such matters of state as the rebellion of Toussaint-Louv ert ure and the ret rea t fr om Moscow. Over 90 carefully selected illustrations make this a superbly illustrated, detailed autobiography of one of history's great characters." Fine/Near Fine

The vast conflict, which involved almost all the European powers and their empires, is the subject of (this book). (It) provides a highly readable narrative of a complex period that fundamentally shaped the European state system. There is a non-authorial inscription on the half title page from one couple to another, stating "Father De C. is a good friend of ours, we hope you enjoy his story". "This is (the story of 'The People Beyond'), occasionally poignant, often shocking, but always heroic, from the opening scene of birth in an isolated iglu lit only by a flickering blubber lamp to the final disaster wrought by an epidemic that rages through a whole encampment. Raymond de Coccola was a missionary among these people for twelve years. In surroundings that could not have been more different from his native Corsica, he resolved to learn to understand the people by entering fully into their lives. He shared their quarters in iglu and tent, travelled with them on land and sea in the long winter and short summer, and took his full share in the skilled and unremitting labour of the hunt. Out of this experience comes an account of Eskimo life that will hold every reader fascinated." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. For three of the most critical decades of British naval history, Agamemnon was at the centre of events, fighting at the Battle of the Saintes, Copenhagen and, of course, Trafalgar. Later she served in the West Indies, participating in the Battle of Santo Domingo, and in South American waters until she was wrecked in 1809 in Maldonado Bay, off the coast of present-day Uruguay. 205 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, map. "In July 1942, Major Gordon Lett was taken prisoner at the fall of Tobruk. After fourteen months in the notorious prison camps at Bari and Chieti, he escaped at the Armistice of September 1943 from the camp at Veano and took to the mountains above the Cisa Pass. Rather than return to England, he founded and led an entirely non-political band of highly-successful partisans, the Battaglione Internazionale. The group fought and harassed the Brigate Nere and the Germans along the Magra Valley from north of Pontremoli to La Spezia for eighteen months. They were so influential to the success of the Allied advance that permanent lines of communication with the Allies were established, supplies dropped by air and, later, SAS troops sent in to assist the Battalion. 500 Allied troops escaped to safety via Rossano." MOORE OF CORUNNA., Parkinson, Roger.
11 Parkinson, Roger. MOORE OF CORUNNA.
Hart-Davis, MacGibbon, St Albans, 1976, first edition.
245 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0246107553 B&w illustrations. "Of all British generals who claim the admiration of future generations, Sir John Moore perhaps most truly embodies the ideal of the perfect leader. His c ourage, tactical brilliance, decisiveness, incorruptibility, and gift for firing the spirits of his men in battle were combined with a conscientious regard for the authoity of his government at home - even when its dictates were at odds with h i s o w n sense of the military realities. Rober Parkinson portrays, with a vitality that matches his subject, Moore's extraordinary career: from the first taste of action against the rebel in America to his early personal triumphs against the Fr en ch in C or sica, Holland and Egypt. Then came the clouds of controversy; Moore's involvement in uneasy and dangerous relationships with local authorities in Corsica, Sicily and Sweden brought criticism as well as fame, and foreshadowed the tra gic ro l e h e w oul d play in the Peninsular War. The desperate retreat to Corunna and the last heroic stand against Napoleon's armies are movingly and dramatically told. Dominating the tumult of events and intrigues is the character of a ma n in who m 'e xe rtio ns a mong st dangers and difficulties is preferred to idleness', whose private feelings were subordinated to loyalty to his country and the passionate love of his profession; a restrained eighteenth century gentleman who gave a cap tured Fren ch comma nder his o wn sword to make him feel more comfortable, and who continued to ask as the last life ebbed from his body, 'Are the French beaten?'." Book slightly cocked, light wrinkling at top of spine, small very light stain on of text block. D ust ja cket has li ght wrinkling at top of spine, one tiny edge tear, light liquid stain at bottom inside spine. Very Good/Very Good

SICILY, SARDINIA AND CORSICA., Whelpton, Eric and Barbara.
15 Whelpton, Eric and Barbara. SICILY, SARDINIA AND CORSICA.
Robert Hale, London, 1960, first edition.
192 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps. "Though the three large islands described in this highly entertaining book are situated in the same part of the Mediterranean, they are each amazingly different. In Sicily the immortal spirit of ancient Greece may be recaptured, just as well as in Hellas itself. But besides its temples and theatres, often on magic shores, there is the curious, dominating spell of Etna. The authors not only describe Palermo, the capi tal created by the Normans, Byzantines and Arabs, but Taormina, Syracuse and Agrigento, and the wonderful but little-know baroque cities, the Aeolian Islands, and Erice, the Eryx of the ancients. Except for Alghero and one or two resorts o f t h e N o r th-West, Sardinia remains practically unexplored by the British tourist. Yet it is a land of extraordinary fascination, whose ancient customs and traditions have been maintained more than anywhere else in Europe. And there are lite ra l ly h un d re ds o f miles of wonderful, deserted beaches and secluded little fishing ports. Corsica is only ten miles away to the north, but the scenery is on an even grander scale. The mountains rise to 10,000 feet, there are dense forests , d ee p v all eys o nly re ach ed on foot, and a coast picturesque beyond belief. And though the Corsicans talk an Italian dialect, the soil is French and the atmosphere accordingly gay, lively and distinctive. Of all three Eric and Barbara Whe lpto n w rite wit h th e k nowl edge , fa miliarity and zest which have made their books essential reading for the traveller, past, present and to come." Small creases at bottom corner of half-title page, a few tiny foxing marks on rear pastedown and o n fr ont i nside hing e, a few foxin g mar ks on top of textblock, small bump at top of spine, very small bump at bottom of spine.
