BEYOND THE MYTH: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC., Brooks, Polly Schoyer.
2 Brooks, Polly Schoyer. BEYOND THE MYTH: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC.
New York J.B. Lippincott 1990 03973242257 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Signed by Author
176 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. Signed by author on half title page. "Inspired by her love for France, by her determination to see the rightful king rule, and especially by her private visions and voices, Joan (of Arc) overcame the doubts of everyone from her parents to the king himself. Within a year Joan led the French to a resounding victory at Orleans and made possible the coronation of Charles VII in the cathedral of Reims. But after her glorious triumph, conflicts in the French camp, bad advice, and perhaps Joan's own headstrong nature brought her to defeat and finally to imprisonment and trial for heresy and witchcraft. Burned as a witch by the English after what was largely a political trial, she was later cleared of heresy, and eventually canonized. She is now the most popular French heroine and saint. (The author) has sifted through the records of Joan's trial, examined the studies of major historians, and roamed the streets of Domremy to find out who Joan really was. Neither a cardboard saint nor - as few still think - a witch, Joan emerges as a lively, emotional, determined person who believed so strongly in her cause that she overcame every obstacle she faced. Here is a new Joan for a new generation ready to question old legends and to marvel again at her courage and faith." Part of a series of history books aimed at the teenage reader. Light wrinkling at top of spine, previous owner's signed bookplate on front pastedown. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, a few small light line indentations on front panel and on rear flap, slight fading to spine color.

A CARTOON HISTORY OF THE MONARCHY., Jones, Michael Wynn.
5 Jones, Michael Wynn. A CARTOON HISTORY OF THE MONARCHY.
London Macmillan 1978 0333198050 / 9780333198056 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
207 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). B&w illustrations. "There have been few more consistent, or more satisfying, targets for cartoonists over the centuries than Royalty - above all in Britain where for over three hundred years our reigning monarchs have been satirised or flattered, ridiculed or glorified in the public print. (This book) sets out to document this continuing confrontation between the establishment and the caricaturists, from the reign of Elizabeth I to the present day. Political crises, religious schisms, national scandals and passing indiscretions all kindled the fires of contemporary cartoonists' inspiration: Charles I and Parliament, Popish plots and Jacobite invasions, Hanoverian mistresses, the excesses of the Regency, William IV and reform, Victoria and her ministers, Edward VII and his escapades, the Abdication crisis. Here too are the foreigners' views of our kings and queens and royal relatives, and generations of royal courtships and coronations, pomp and patronage seen through the eyes of some of Britain's greatest cartoonists. The work of Gillray, Rowlandson, Cruikshank, Tenniel, May, Beerbohm, Giles, Trog, and many others is testament to freedom of expression in this country and gives a fascinating perspective on the chequered careers of our rulers." Previous owner's initials, place and date in ink on free front endpaper; two tiny soiling marks on free front endpaper; light wear on bottom of boards; light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling.

CORONATION: A HISTORY OF KINGSHIP AND THE BRITISH MONARCHY., Strong, Roy.
8 Strong, Roy. CORONATION: A HISTORY OF KINGSHIP AND THE BRITISH MONARCHY.
HarperCollins, London, 2005, first edition.
556 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0007160542 Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "As a boy of sixteen, Roy Strong watched the grand procession carrying Queen Elizabeth II to her coronatio n. The spectacle was considered the greatest public event of the century. But now, several years later, many people have little notion of what a coronation is and are unaware of the rich resonances of the ritual, or its deep significance i n t e r m s of the committal of monarch to people. This book is the first of its kind - a comprehensive history to set each coronation into its political, social, religious and cultural context. The story is one of constant re-invention as the s er v ic e ha s ha d to respond to the changes in fortune of the monarchy and the country, everything from legitimising usurpers to reconciling a Catholic rite to the tenets of Protestantism. It had to be recreated from scratch after the restoratio n o f Cha rl es II in 1 660. By telling the story of each coronation in turn, Roy Strong recounts the history of British monarchy since the 10th century, and looks forward to the coronation of Prince Charles. The ceremony's musical history alone is on e of ex tra ord inar y r ichness - involving Henry Purcell, Handel, Edward Elgar and William Walton. The celebratory poetry, art and spectacular engravings published at coronations are all explored, as is the more recent role of photographe rs. Me ticul ousl y re sear ched, wit h rich visual material, including illuminated manuscripts, engravings, portraits, photographs and television stills, this will be the definitive book for many years to come." Very light wrinkling at top/botto m of spi ne, sm all a rea o f soi ling a t top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has very light rubbing and soiling, several very small tears - some with creases at top edge of rear panel - archivally taped, minor edge wrinkling. Very Good+/Very G ood-
