"Antony Alpers has tried to discard all preconceived ideas and re-enter the world of the Polynesians as it was before Cook's arrival in 1769. By reconstructing their legends, myths, folktales and poetry in an immediate and convincing style he has let them speak for themselves. And in a long introduction that is a masterly compression of the Polynesians' whole way of life he cuts away our illusions and leaves us not only face to face with the islanders but with the way they saw themselves and the jewelled archipelagos in which they lived and sailed." Contains a preface, introduction and note on pronunciation and spelling, followed by groups of legends under the following headings: The Creation; The Heroes; Seven Ages in Thirteen Chants; The Marquesas, and Mangareva; Easter Island; Hawaiian Islands; Tongan Group; Samoa; Atolls and Outliers; New Zealand and the Chathams; 'From Darkness to Light'. The recipes in this sooo seventies book have been produced on avocado, green and reddish-orange paper stock. "Cooking is the simplest way of saying 'I Love You'. If you can accept this fact both your love-life and your cooking will improve immeasurably. This is a book for people who cook with love and enjoyment, for people who want to leave drudgery out of the kitchen. It tells you in cartoons and words how to prepare food (maximum time for most things thirty minutes), how to eat it, and even what to do while you're waiting for it to cook. Anybody can be a good cook. 'All this idiocy that makes good food the specialty of gourmet clubs', says the author, 'is just another aspect of snobbery. Nice dishes and tablecloths are great but they are not essential. What is essential is a loose and happy approach to the stove'. You may never be called a gourmet if you follow this book, but you will get to be called a hell of a good cook." Bump at top of spine - migrates int o text block, small bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear and rubbing, light edge wrinkling, a few tiny/small edge tears - some with creases.

"This 'scrapbook' is as absorbing as an old family album that carries one back through the decades. Pictures and yarns of the early 1800s wheat-farming era, when harvesting was a matter of hand labor - cutting with scythes - bundling into sheaves - and the women following the crews to cook up husky meals for hungry men. Then came Cyrus McCormick's mechanical reaper. Although many were dubious about the machine, it proved itself highly competent, and the whole picture changed. Harvest-ing would never be the same again. Following the success of the reaper came many other inventions that revolutionized wheat farming and all of agriculture. But wheat farming still required plenty of people-power." 240 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 057114389X "When the British were in India they developed a curious cuisine all of their own. As they made their mark on their host culture, the formidable memsahib - or English housew ife - made sure that much traditional cuisine was rejected in favour of an impossible combination of European customs, and the results were frequenlty chaotic. Anglo-Indian cooking was at its best when it achieved a kind of cultural balance; m u l l i g atawny, kedgeree and Worcestershire sauce are all products of the Raj. Drawing on first-hand accounts, David Burton includes over sixty authentic recipes, adapts the best of them for the modern cook, and builds up a fascianting, often h il ar io us p ic ture of the British - at best, endearingly naive, at worst, ignorant and xenophobic - seen through the kitchen door." 347 pp, 6 7/8" H. "When 'Royalty' paid the tab, price wasn't the issue, survival was. And Garrett wasn't sure it was worth his life to take Maggie Jean on as his client. Not in a kingdom where the biggest con artists weren't human, magic could beat any weapon, and the local killers were built like tanks. Still, damsels in distress were Garrett's weakness, especially when they had all the right equipment in all the right places. And it seemed like a simple missing person's case: a vanished teenage daughter, a distraught mother trying to track her down. But when the mother used to be the mistress of the now defunct king, and when a guy they called the Rainmaker (a character so well connected even Garrett's friends didn't want to rat on him) was far too interested in Maggie and ready to see Garrett permanently removed from the case, he knew he'd have to call in some big favors just to keep his head on his shoulders, let alone to find a kid who probably didn't want to be found." New York Roc, (New York, 1999), 3rd printing. 1999 0451454790 / 9780451454799 1st Printing Mass Market Paperback Very Good+ Cover Art By Alan Pollock.
356 pp, 6 3/4" H. "Since the end of the war, there had always been bigotry against non-humans in TunFaire. Even though many species had sacrificed in battle, some groups of humans thought the 'Golden Rule' translated to 'Humans rule. Now give us your gold'. With the streets descending into bloody race riots, and the organized 'human' brotherhoods flexing both physical and economic muscle, TunFaire was a hairsbreadth from total chaos. Garrett is a wise-guy private investigator who speaks loudly and carries a big stick. He gets pulled into the game when a powerful gang of human rightists starts trying to shake down his employer. Backed by a circle of friends no one would wish on their worst enemy - and a foul-mouthed parrot that won't shut up - Garrett is caught in a conspiracy of hate that pits man against - everybody!" Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor corner wear.
