2 Blake, Steve and Lloyd, Scott. With John Baldock. THE KEYS TO AVALON: THE TRUE LOCATION OF ARTHUR'S KINGDOM REVEALED.
Shaftesbury, Dorset Element 2000 1862047359 / 9781862047358 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
302 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w maps, family trees, decorations, colour and b&w photographs. "(The authors) unearth the truth about King Arthur and the magical realm of Avalon. They reveal how, through their investigations, they traced original key documents which had lain neglected for centuries. By combining the ancient sources with an intimate knowledge of the British landscape, they have managed to cast new light on the Dark Ages. Every piece of the puzzle they have put together fits - perfectly. The authors prove that the stories about Arthur and Avalon are rooted firmly within historical events which took place within a precise geographical setting in Wales; they also expose how and to what ends Arthurian legend has been hijacked for political gain throughout the ages. By establishing the historical facts about Arthur, his knights and the exact location of Avalon, (they) rip away the tissue of fabrication and fairy-tale that has shrouded the true origins of the British people and of anyone claiming ancestry from these isles." Book is very slightly cocked. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very minor edge wear, minor browning at inside edges, minor rubbing.

3 Byng, John, Viscount Torrington. Edited by Donald Adamson. RIDES ROUND BRITAIN.
London Folio Society 1996 Hard Cover Very Good Anne Hayward.
505 pp, 8vo (8" H). Bound in quarter orange-brown buckram, Ann Muir marbled paper boards; dark brown endpapers. Plain dark brown slipcase. Frontispiece and 25 half-page and smaller b&w engravings by Anne Hayward, 9 maps by Denys Baker. A countryman at heart, Byng travelled throughout Britain on horseback whenever his position at the Stamp Office would allow him to escape from London. As a chronicler of the eighteenth-century, "Byng travels with an observant though never a roving eye. At times it is the eye of the modern photo-journalist, as when he records a meeting with Humphrey Repton, visits Sarah Siddons in her dressing-room at Birmingham, or glimpses Warren Hastings changing horses on his way to Daylesford. At other times his eye is more like that of the self-taught but well-trained artist, as when he admires the flickering tapers of Yordas Cave or the Kentish hop-pickers working in all haste among the twinkling lights of the hopfields. At Cromford in Derbyshire the bustle and brilliance of Arkwright's great cotton 'manufactory' even blind him to what he basically regards as the horrors of creeping industrialism: 'The cotton mills,' he observes, 'seven storeys high and fill'd with inhabitants, remind me of a first-rate man of war and, when they are lighted up on a dark night, look most luminously beautiful.' As is now widely acknowledged, (Byng) is one of the greatest British travellers of the eighteenth or indeed of any century. Not only has he produced an excellent travel guide (as, in a way, he intended to do); his work is also a major contribution to the social history of England and Wales - and especially Welsh social history. (This book) is, finally, a masterpiece of social observation, written with as fine an eye for detail as Jane Austen's and (like Pepys diary) superb in its delineation of its author's own character." Some light rubbing to paper on boards. Slipcase has minor rubbing and one very small edge bump.

95 pp, 9 5/8" H. Map endpapers, b&w and colour reproductions. **INSCRIBED ON HALF TITLE PAGE: "FOR S______ L____, WHO KNEW ABOUT SEA-WARFARE LONG BEFORE I WROTE THIS BOOK FROM DAVID COBB 10 OCTOBER 1989. "** "David Cobb's desire to follow in the footsteps of the great war artists of the past was a lifelong ambition. In this autobiographical book he explains how everything in his varied and successful career as a marine painter seemed to be preparing him for such an undertaking. His chance came in 1982 when he was invited to visit the Falkland Islands immediately after the Argentine surrender and, with the full co-operation of the military, he began a remarkable series of paintings to record the principal events of the war. The resulting collection, which ranges from rapid oil 'sketches' executed on the spot to prestigious large-scale commissions, forms the central interest of this book." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small bump at top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, area of faint handwriting impression on front panel, minor rubbing.

TRAFALGAR AND THE SPANISH NAVY., Harbron, John D. Inscribed by author.
5 Harbron, John D. Inscribed by author. TRAFALGAR AND THE SPANISH NAVY.
Conway Maritime Press, London, 1988.
178 pp, small 4to (10 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. INSCRIBED AND DATED BY AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE. ISBN 0851774776 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions, drawings, colour plates. "Contrary to popular opinion, the defeat of the Armada was not the end of the Spanish Navy as a major maritime power. Indeed it underwent a real renaissance in the eighteenth century, and at the beginning of the Napoleonic Wars was the third largest navy in the world. Its ships were well designed and superbly built, and were officered by brave and dedicated professionals, who were nowhere near as ineffective in combat as often represented. This is the first English language book to look at Spanish naval forces in the century before Trafalgar, an d p r o v i des a long overdue reassessment of the aims and achievements of the service. Following a brief overview of the factors which shaped development and the main maritime events, more detailed chapters cover Spanish warship design and const ru c ti on , an d the much-maligned officer corps, concluding with sections on the battle itself and its significance to Spain....It is illustrated throughout with contemporary plans, paintings and ship models, and will prove stimulating reading for la ym an and s pec ia list alike." Very small bump at bottom of rear hinge area. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Very Good+/Very Good+

BEFORE THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER: THE DEVELOPMENT OF AVIATION VESSELS 1849-1922., Layman, R.D.
7 Layman, R.D. BEFORE THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER: THE DEVELOPMENT OF AVIATION VESSELS 1849-1922.
Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, Maryland, 1989.
128 pp, small 4to (10 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0870212109 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings. "Before the flight-deck aircraft carrier evolved, there were many attempts by the navies of the world to take flying m achines to sea. This book describes by particulars and brief histories the surface craft that over a span of 73 years were employed experimentally or operationally in efforts to adapt aerial devices to the service of naval warfare. Many of t h e s e w ere influential in the development of shipboard aviation; others were less so but are included because of their interest. The book concentrates on vessels employed principally, or solely, for aeronautical purposes, and omits detailed p ar ti cu la rs of ships whose usage involved no permanent conversion. However, although the book is devoted largely to vessels predating the flight-deck carrier, the first three ships are described, since they represent the culmination of nearl y thr ee- qua rte rs o f a century of theory, experiment and practical experience. (This book) follows the successful approach of the 'Conway's Fighting Ships' series, divided by country with general introductions followed by tabular data and hist or ies of a ll t he s hip s. Th e book is illustrated with some very rare photos of these little-known vessels and their aircraft." Slight bump at top/bottom of spine, previous owner's embossed stamp on half-title page. Dust jacket has minor edg e w ear/ wrink ling, mino r wr ink ling. Very Good+/Very Good+

316 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H), orange cloth with black title/author blocks, orange lettering. Harry Beckhoff dust jacket and endpaper art. "The mangement of fiancees and the manipulation of high finances go roisterously hand in hand in this amorous and economic history of Biscuit, otherwise Lord Biskerton, son and heir of the sixth Earl of Hoddesdon. Biscuit had red hair, a preliminary scenario for a mustache, and a noble determination to escape the disgrace of work. Berry Conway who has less iron in his soul had succumbed to economic pressure and become the secretary to T. Paterson Frisby, a dyspeptic American who had twenty million and loved every cent of it. When Biscuit and Berry pooled ideas for the mutual betterment of their separate estates, and one idea had to do with Ann Moon, Frisby's beautiful niece and heir, they leaned heavily on Aunt Vera an old campaigner in the field of love. How Uncle Paterson was caught short and rushed to cover while Aunt Vera hedged the market with a double play and salted down two money-making engagements for the house of Hoddesdon is one of the most irresistible tales of the one and only P.G."
