"(S)tarting in the sixteenth century, author and reader begin their survey of Iberian Baroque with the Plateresque in Spain and the Manoel ine in Portugal, and continue it until, two hundred or so years later, they reach the High Baroque conclusion of Castile, Seville and Granada, and the Rococo decadence of eighteenth-century Portugal. On the way they will have examined some ar c h i t e c tural and sculptural masterpieces of astonishing quality and individuality: the palaces or houses of Mafra, Queluz and La Granja; Santiago da Compostela, the Escorial, the Cartuja of Coimbra; sculpture at Macarena, Alcobaca and Arouca; t he T ra ns pa ra nte of Toledo Cathedral, the convents of Bom Jesus, Tomar and Evora. - These, and many other churches, cathedrals, palaces and domestic buildings are illustrated in a collection of nearly 100 pictures which show, as unmistakably as Mr . London B.T. Batsford 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
168 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w plates. "Primarily, 'Denmark' is a topographical work. As such it tells the intending visitor about all those features of the country's buildings, landscape and people which are most characteristic and best worth seeing. But, since the author is Sacheverell Sitwell, it is concerned with other topics which are no less worthy of mention - the castles and country houses, of which Wedellsborg, Rosenholm and Valdemar Slot are some of the most notable; the work of such sculptors and stuccoists as Quellinus, Ehbisch, Taddei and Carbonetti, both in the splendid ceilings of Clausholm and Frederiksberg and in the series of monumental 'Epitaphia' which are a feature of so many churches; the lay convents, the royal portraits, the costumes of Fano, the houses of Tonder." light toning and a few faint foxing marks on free endpapers, patches of very light browning on pages 46 & 47, a few very small foxing marks on top and fore-edge of text block - some migrate into margins, very minor edge wear. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling; very light browning to spine, flap-folds and some edges.
