OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II., Bacque, James.
4 Bacque, James. OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II.
Toronto Stoddart 1989 0773722696 / 9780773722699 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
248 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and drawings. "In the U.S. Army prison camps of western Germany at the end of World War II, almost four million German soldiers were held prisoner outdoors, in barbed-wire enclosures, with little or no food and water, for many months. The French Army, which took some 630,000 prisoners from the Americans to use as reparations labor, starved and mistreated them so badly that likely 250,000 died. In the American camps, at least 750,000 died. Most were soldiers of the Wehrmacht who surrendered on May 8, 1945, but many scores of thousands were women, children and old men. The deaths were simply listed as 'OTHER LOSSES". In painstaking, wide-ranging research, the author has interviewed hundreds of prisoners, guards and army officers and has amassed many thousands of pages of evidence from Army archives in Paris, Koblenz, London, Washington and Ottawa. He was ably assisted by senior U.S. Army historian Col. Ernest F. Fisher. How the public was fooled, the U.S. State Department co-opted, the International Committee of the Red Cross deceived, the press negated, the U.S. Senate neutered, books censored, archives destroyed and senior officials inveigled into the coverup - all this is outlined in a work that destroys the genial myths about Allied war aims and exposes the sources of cynical Cold War propaganda that blamed the Russians for all the deaths among these prisoners." Slight bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light browning at top/bottom edges of flaps, very light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel.

BLOKES: THE BAD BOYS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE., Castronovo, David.
7 Castronovo, David. BLOKES: THE BAD BOYS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE.
New York Continuum 2009 0826428320 / 9780826428325 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
197 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H). "They came from unpromising places and unglamorous backgrounds. They crashed the Establishment party in one generation, raided the citadels of culture, and brought their idioms, themes, and passions to the center of British life. The blokes were writers who revitalized British drama, fiction, poetry, and criticism. This is the story, told in a series of profiles, of New Britannia. The cast of characters includes playwrights John Osborne and Arnold Wesker, novelist Kingsley Amis, critic Kenneth Tynan, poet Philip Larkin, fiction writer Alan Sillitoe, plus lesser-known figures such as John Braine, David Storey, Stan Barstow, and Keith Waterhouse - up to more contemporary writers like Martin Amis and Nick Hornby. The central idea of this book is how these writers, and others, transformed British heritage - how they worked with the materials of their own backgrounds, the class system, tradition, and artistic convention to make new art. They took their place in a long line of writers who thrived on grit: Daniel Defoe, Charles Dickens, Bernard Shaw, D.H. Lawrence. (It) is an entertaining and insightful survey of a group of disparate writers who had a profound and enduring impact upon British literary culture." Very light rubbing on boards, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny tear at top of rear flap-fold, minor rubbing.

Novato, California Underwood-Miller 1993 0887331750 / 9780887331756 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Don Maitz.
98 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color. "Since his professinal debut nearly 20 years ago, artist Don Maitz has been giving form to the fantastic in a way that has won him widespread recognition by both his professional peers and an enthusiastic public. Following up on the success of 'First Maitz', this volume is a lavishly produced collection of some of Maitz's most popular works, as well as some never-before-published paintings. Exhibiting a fanatical attention to detail, the paintings apply surrealist technique to surreal situations. Maitz likes to mix modern imagery with medieval icons and his pictures frequently display a keen sense of wit. (He) has designed more than 250 book covers for some of today's leading authors of cutting-edge science fiction, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Piers Anthony, Stephen King, Raymond E. Feist, C.J. Cherryh, Janny Wurts and Gene Wolfe. His visceral and adventurous visions have also attracted commercial clients for national advertising: Eastman Kodak, NBC, and Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. (He) has received the Silver Medallion from the American Society of Illustrators, the Hugo Award and the Howard Award for Best Artist at the Sixth World Fantasy Convention." Soft crease at top corner of first few pages, slight waviness to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

THE WAR ON THE HOSPITAL SHIPS 1914-1918., McGreal, Stephen.
14 McGreal, Stephen. THE WAR ON THE HOSPITAL SHIPS 1914-1918.
Barnsley Pen & Sword 2008 1844158586 / 9781844158584 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
272 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Wounded Allied personnel were invariably repatriated by hospital ships, which ran the gauntlet of mined waters and gambled on the humanity of the U-Boat commanders. For, contrary to the terms of the Geneva Convention, on occasions Germany had sunk the unarmed hospital ships under the pretence they carried reinforcement troops and ammunition. The press seized on these examples of 'Hun Barbarity', especially the drowning on non-combatant female nurses. The crises heighened following the German Government's 1 February 1917 introduction of unrestricted naval warfare. The white-painted Allied hospital ships became, in German eyes, legitimate targets for the U-Boats. As the war on the almost 100 strong fleet of hospital ships intensified the British threatened reprisals against Germany, in particular an Anglo-French bombing raid upon a German town. Undeterred the Germans stepped up their campaign sinking two hospital ships in swift succession. Seven hospital ships struck mines and a further eight were torpedoed. Faced with such a massacre of the innocents Britain decided her hospital ships, painted and brightly lit in accordance with the Geneva Convention, could no longer rely on this immunity. The vessels were repainted in drab colours, defensively armed and sailed as ambulance transports among protected convoys. Germany had successfully banished hospital ships from the high seas." Appendices: Roll of Honour; War Memorials and Cemeteries. Book is Near Fine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, very minor rubbing.

298 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). Eight b&w plates plus fold-out map - collated. Includes the author's introduction to her novel, "Mark Hurdlestone". "Mrs. Moodie, a refined and sophisticated person by upbringing and inclination, looks, not back, but about her at the relatively advanced society which had grown up in the clearings along the 'front' of the St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario. Here we are concerned, not with the woodsman's axe and the primitive struggle against nature, not with the solitary but with social man. Mrs. Moodie is quite sure that this society is in a much healthier condition than the one she had known in England: She associates the improvement with the mixing of the classes in the new society and thinks that the absence of convention and prejudice in the relations between various occupational groups is partly due to a 'friendly' American influence. She likes the greater liveliness in social intercourse, and better still she likes the way in which the stripping away of the old preconceptions makes possible a true estimate of a man's worth which she sees simply as the sum of his native ability, his industry, his moral training and his education." First published in 1853 . Minor browning to pages, light cigarette odor, a few tiny light stains in top margin of pages 264 & 265, light browning to edges of textblock, minor wrinking at top/bottom of spine, minor soiling on bottom of textblock. Toronto McGraw-Hill Ryerson 1976 0070823405 / 9780070823402 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good - Alan Daniel, cover art.
179 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). The award-winning Canadian author's first novel. " 'Every year a new mate; it is beyond imagining. New feathers to rustle, new beaks to bang, new dense, twiggy nests to construct.' muses Judith Gill as she and her husband and children watch a television program on birds. Every-thing, from the suburban house she and her family live in to her choice of friends, has been made along conventional lines. As she herself says, 'I never think anymore of the kind of life I once wanted to have'. She has built around her life a hedge of restraint, 'a violet-tinted reserve', deriving her pleasures from small, everyday ceremonies which add their own unique flavour and colour. That delicate balance between the obvious and the mysterious forms the focus as Judith observes and investigates the hidden drives and motives of her own life, the lives of the people around her and the life of the pioneer woman she is dissecting for a book, Susanna Moodie. Judith's husband is elusive, her children remote, her friends motivated by needs and aspirations she herself has long abandoned. Untangling the entrapment of facts and fictions leads her to heightened self- awareness and rather surprising discoveries." Previous owner's bookplate with blacked out name on free front endpaper, minor edge wear, one page with tiny corner crease, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one small edge tear, very light rubbing/soiling on rear panel, a few tiny edge chips.
