YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY., Allen, Gillian.
1 Allen, Gillian. YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY.
Buckingham Barracuda 1987 0860232921 / 9780860232926 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
124 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Number 368 of a limited edition. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "(I)t is the detail of the 19th century record which attracts us most; the people who lived in specific houses like the Millers, Langleys and Merediths; the controversy about the three posts outside the White Hart Inn; the shops that changed from bank to fishmonger, from watchmaker to cobbler, from Bell Inn to basketmaker; the man who dug a canal in his garden to employ poor people; the ten-year-old who died when her pinny caught fire; the horse that took nine men to the gallows. Here too is the fire brigade whose captain refused entry to his own team as his cottage blazed away; the riots when a cemetery was proposed; the earliest chapels built and closed; Ann Pain, who stole a bullock's heart on St. Valentine's Day; Mr Marks, who lost 50 Pounds at Wellington Fair; elderly Maria Strippling, sentenced to seven days' labour for pinching threepennorth of hay; and the 4,703 tramps who came to Wellington in 1865. Transport changed the town, when the turnpikes, canal, railway and finally motorcar came. The first car owner was heavily fined; the first acceptable motor hit the Town Hall. Taverns prospered, and there were 75 at one time or another. Thirteen survive. The greatest change of all came with the Great War - 'our old world has gone forever' said the local 'rag'. That world is recreated (here) - in a fluent, fascinating and fact-packed narrative and some 200 pictures, many of them rare, and most unique to this book." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, a few small faint indentations on panels, minor rubbing.

2 Arnup, John D. MIDDLETON: THE BELOVED JUDGE.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1988 0771007959 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
202 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he story of one of Ontario's and Canada's greatest judges, William Edward Middleton (1860-1948), who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario for thirty-three years, twenty-two of them as an appellate judge. At a time when a number of Supreme Court justices were belligerent to counsel and irascible toward their brother judges, Mr. Justice Middleton set a high standard of courtesy and civility that has carried on to the present day. Because (he) never sought attention or encouraged controversy, his contributions have been known heretofore only in legal circles. Yet here is a man whose written judgments are still cited fifty, sixty, even seventy years later, the judge who sat on 'the Great Stork Derby' case of the 1930s, and who decided which of the two litigious Kellogg brothers could sell his corn flakes in Canada. In addition, Middleton was a renowned botanist and legal scholar. The prison inmates of his Bible class knew him better and appreciated his exemplary character far more than the average citizen. (This book) is rich with anecdotage and presents important legal cases in a manner the general reader can understand and appreciate." Minor old tape residue at top/bottom edges of free endpapers, small corner crease on page 7, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small ink mark on bottomm edge of both boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one or two very tiny edge tears, minor rubbing.

More than 300 Canadians tell their own stories of the Second World War - stories of cour a g e , sacrifice, tragedy, and glory. Their stories are celebrated here, woven into a compelling narra ti ve o f the Canadian wartime experience, bringing the past vividly to life. Here are tales from noted war correspondents Scott Young and Matthew Halton; stories of home-front rationing, shortages and endless bureaucracy; horrific memories of Buc hen wal d - and Canadian internment camps; hair-raising bomber command stories; revelations of the repatriation controversy; and hilarious accounts of wartime entertainers, including Wayne and Shuster and the crew of 'Meet The Navy'." 284 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs. "The development of the Avro Arrow supersonic fighter was a remarkable Canadian achievement. Its mysterious cancellation in February 1959 prompted questions that have long gone unanswered. What role did the Central Intelligence Agency play in the scrapping of the project? Who in Canada's government was involved in that decision? What, if anything, did Canada get in return? Who ordered the blowtorching of all the prototypes? And did Arrow technology find its way into the American Stealth fighter/bomber program? When (this book) was first published in 1992, its answers to these questions sent shock waves across the country. Using never-before-released documents, (it) exploded the myth that design flaws, cost overruns, or obsolescence had triggered the demise of the Arrow. Now, in this fully revised fourth edition, complete with two new appendices, the bestselling book bring readers up-to-date on the CF- 105 Arrow, the most innovative, sophisticated aircraft the world had seen by the end of the 1950s." These include the struggle over control of the Fleet Air Arm, the Jutland Controversy, the Invergordon Mutiny and its aftermath, and both the Washington Naval Conference and the Lausanne Conference. There are interesting lett ers to Keyes from friends describing the situation in the Baltic, 1919-20, and China in the 1920s. Of particular interest is an interview with President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1934; an account of a naval exercise in the Mediterranean si m u l a t i n g t he reinforcement of Singapore in the event of war with Japan; and a contingency plan for forcing the Dardenelles in the event of war with Turkey over the Mosul question. There are discussions of the writing of the official histor ie s of t he w ar , l et ters from a former Austrian naval officer on Adriatic matters and, of course, lots of revealing comments on the personalities (and feuds) of leaders of the time: Churchill, Trenchard, Beatty, Jellicoe, Chatfield and others . 192 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs, drawings, map. "This is the definitive account of the loss of HMS Captain and the decade-long public controversy in parliament and the press which preceded and led to the building of the ship in unprecedented circumstances. HMS Captain was a very important vessel because she was the first sea-going turret warship built to provide all-round fire power. She was the first in a line of innovative designs heralding the great development of warships that reached its peak before World War Two. The lengthy controversy involved a row between Captain Cowper Phipps Coles, RN, the designer of Captain and inventor of the turntable turret gun for warships, and the Admiralty Constructor, Edward Reed, who regarded the design of the vessel as potentially dangerous. Each had his supporters, and the Admiralty made a fatal compromise, for on the night of 6/7 September 1870, only four months after being commissioned, the new ship capsized in a gale off Finisterre and sank immediately. The death toll of British seamen was greater than at the Battle of Trafalgar. (The author) has previously written on the ship and the tragedy, but he has recently discovered new and previously unknown information that changes history in relation to the loss of the ship - information that appears to have been suppressed at the court martial of the 18 surviviors." Two minor corner bumps, minor bump on fore-edge of front board, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Toronto McGraw-Hill 1970 0070926557 / 9780070926554 Hard Cover Good+ Good+
239 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, map. "In 1956, nearly forty years after the death of Canadian artist, Tom Thomson, William T. Little and three companions set themselves to a macabre task. Ever since July 16, 1917, when the artist's badly decomposed body was found floating in the waters of Canoe Lake, controversy and conjecture hovered over the matter of how Tom Thomson really met his death. It was as a result of this prolonged uncertainty that the four men began digging in the little cemetery in Algonquin Park where Thomson was supposedly buried. They were determined to solve, if only for themselves, part of the mystery that surrounded the name of Tom Thomson. What they discovered only confirmed their suspicion that the full story of Thomson's untimely death was not in fact as history had recorded it. The lack of sound and conclusive evidence from earlier investigations set William Little into action. Meticulously he pieced together everything that had ever been written, documented, speculated, or theorized about Thomson during the artist's lengthy periods in Algonquin Park - with special emphasis on those strange events which occurred prior to and after his 'accidental death by drowning'. On the one hand William Little has been able to give us a fuller understanding of both Thomson's personality and his instincts as a painter. On the other, he has amassed considerable evidence that suggests a murder, a suspect, and a motive." Large diagonal creasing on page leaf xiii/xiv, small light stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has light browning at edges and on spine/flap-folds, several very small edge tears and one small 'v' tear on front hinge - all archivally taped, light rubbing/soiling, large corner crease on front flap.

352 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Peter Byerly isn't sure what drew him into this particular bookshop in the Welsh town of Hay-on-Wye. Nine months earlier, the death of his beloved wife, Amada, had left him shattered. The young antiquarian bookseller relocated from North Carolina to the English countryside, hoping to outrun his grief and rediscover the joy he once took in collecting and restoring rare books. But upon opening an eighteenth-century study of Shakespeare forgeries, Peter is shocked when a portrait of Amanda tumbles out of its pages. Of course, it can't be her. The watercolor is clearly Victorian. Yet the resemblance is uncanny, and Peter becomes obsessed with learning the picture's origins. Peter follows the trail of clues across the centuries - from a raucous London tavern where the unscrupulous bookseller Bartholomew Harbottle plots against the 'upstart crow' William Shakespeare to the unfinished ramparts of an Oxfordshire mansion where a frustrated Victorian painter mourns his lost love and takes revenge on his book-collecting rival. Along the way Peter discovers his holy grail: a priceless literary artifact that could prove the truth about Shakespeare's identity. Fearing the book may be a forgery, Peter races against time to prove its authenticity, evading the clutches of a murderer, meeting a woman who may hold the key to the mystery of the portrait, and finally discovering the truth about his own past and precious Amanda." Book is very slightly bowed. Dust jacket has one minor soft edge crease.
