1 Cockfield, Jamie H. WITH SNOW ON THEIR BOOTS: THE TRAGIC ODYSSEY OF THE RUSSIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE IN FRANCE DURING WORLD WAR I.
New York St. Martin's Griffin 1999 0312173563 / 9780312173562 Soft Cover Very Good
396 pp, 8 3/16" H. B&w photographs. "In 1916, in an exchange of human flesh for war material, the Russian government sent to France two brigades to fight on the side of their French allies. By the end of World War I, these two brigades had experienced their own form of the Russian Revolution, had been isolated at a southern training post in a disciplinary move by the French government, had battled against each other in what was one of the first confrontations of the Russian Civil War, and had emerged from the conflict as a single force, the Russian Legion of Honor, which would remain loyal to France until the end of the war. The remarkable story of these Russian soldiers has been basically overlooked by historians - until now. (This book) explores the journey and transformation of these men and, in doing so, examines the impact of the revolution on the Russians who were caught in the middle of wartime alliances and nationalist ardor. A microcosm of the political, social, and military struggle that was to occur in Russia in 1917 and in the years to follow, (it) also looks at the changes in the relationship between France and Russia during and after the war." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, three light creases down spine, minor soiling on bottom of book.

RED IRON NIGHTS. GARRETT P.I. SERIES., Cook, Glen.
2 Cook, Glen. RED IRON NIGHTS. GARRETT P.I. SERIES.
New York ROC 1991 0451451082 / 9780451451088 1st Printing Mass Market Paperback Very Good
270 pages, 6 13/16" H. "Blood-soaked blades had been taking their toll among the luscious lovelies in Garrett's home city of TunFaire. And though Garrett could be as civic-minded as the next guy - unless the next guy was Captain Block of the Watch - the private eye wasn't sure he really wanted to take on a serial killer psycho who did too good a carving job and never left any of the blood behind. Still, having Block pay him for his services with lots of ill-gotten government funds, and having his own partner, the Dead Man, strenuously urge him to take the case, proved an irresistible combination for Garrett. And so the top - and only - private eye around found himself lining up his allies for a search that would take him from the lowest slums to the highest estates, from confrontations with butterfly- and magic-spitting enemies to run-ins with the king of crime's wayward daughter to a final encounter with an ancient evil which had once again been loosed on his unsuspecting town." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very soft corner crease on front cover, small corner crease on rear cover - migrates into pages, light edge wear.

THE THEBAN MYSTERIES., Cross, Amanda. (pseudonym of Carolyn Gold Heilbrun.)
3 Cross, Amanda. (pseudonym of Carolyn Gold Heilbrun.) THE THEBAN MYSTERIES.
London Victor Gollancz 1972 0575013745 / 9780575013742 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
173 pp, 8" H. "Once again our detective is the charming and erudite Kate Fansler, professor of English Literature at an American university, aided by the New York assistant district attorney, Reed Amheart, who she has recently married. In an emergency she agrees to take on a senior seminar on 'Antigone' at her old school, the Theban. The central situation of the play, Antigone's determination to give token burial to her brother, in defiance of King Creon's edict, provides a challenge to which the girls at the Theban respond eagerly - a heroine defying to the death the tyranny of the State. And Kate soon finds herself deeply involved in today's confrontations and crises. But the crunch comes when a pupil's mother - a heart patient, and neurotic - is found dead in the school in the middle of the night. How did she get there? And why? And how did she die? Was she frightened to death by the guard dogs that patrol the building at night? Or was she brought to the school already a corpse? Reed offers himself as guinea pig to test the reactions of the terrifying Dobermans. And Kate skilfully probes the girls' reactions by judging their passionate responses to the Greek drama." Small very light stain at top edge of free front endpaper, a few tiny foxing marks on fore-edge and top edge of text block, tiny bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

FLASHMAN AND THE REDSKINS. FROM THE FLASHMAN PAPERS, 1849-50 AND 1875-76., Fraser, George MacDonald.
4 Fraser, George MacDonald. FLASHMAN AND THE REDSKINS. FROM THE FLASHMAN PAPERS, 1849-50 AND 1875-76.
London Collins 1982 0002226618 / 9780002226615 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Barbosa dust jacket art.
479 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Map endpapers. "When the tide of battle surged over the slopes of Little Bighorn, and Sitting Bull's braves gathered for the final charge that would sweep away the gallant remnant of Custer's 7th Cavalry, a clarion voice was heard above the crash of shots and whistle of arrows, the war-whoops and the pounding hooves: - Readers of his previous adventures will not fail to identify the speaker, or to recognise the tall, distinguished figure in evening dress, tails and whiskers, fleeing the stricken field: Sir Harry Flashman, V.C., veteran of countless retreats from battle and bedchamber, the most decorated coward of the Victorian age, was meeting his fate with the same matchless poltroonery and deafness to duty and decency which had sustained him through a lifetime of dishonourable service, and endeared him to a generation of readers. But how the arch-cad of Dr Arnold's Rugby found himself in the climactic struggle of the American West is only one chapter in an odyssey as hair-raising and scandalous as any in his six earlier volumes of memoirs. He traces it with his usual shameless candour and caustic humour, from the wagon-trains of the Forty-Niners, when he foug ht his terrified way across the Plains in command of a bordello on wheels, to the holocaust of Bent's Fort and the horrors of scalp-hunting raids, Apache warpaths, dinner parties with Custer, captivity among the Sioux, confrontations with President Grant and Wild Bill Hickock, duels, escapes, conspiracies, and shoot-outs - to say nothing of passionate encounters with Indian belles, dusky beauties, enthusiastic widows, and mysterious adventuresses. This is Flashy's West as only he can describe it - the West, at once legendary and authentic, of Mangas Colorado and Kit Carson, of Custer and Spotted Tail, of Crazy Horse and the Deadwood stage, a pageant of savage warriors and Mountain Men, glory-hunting soldiers and gunfighters, gamblers, eccentrics, scoundrels, and those extraordinary folk, white and Indian, who broke the trails or resisted the invasion." Slight ridge down centre of spine, some light toning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light browning on spine, flap-folds and top part of panels; minor edge wrinkling.

O.P.P.: THE HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE FORCE., Higley, Dahn D.
5 Higley, Dahn D. O.P.P.: THE HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE FORCE.
Toronto Queen's Printer 1984 0774389648 / 9780774389648 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge..

THE AQUATIC EXPLORERS: A HISTORY OF THE FISHERIES RESEARCH BOARD OF CANADA., Johnstone, Kenneth.
6 Johnstone, Kenneth. THE AQUATIC EXPLORERS: A HISTORY OF THE FISHERIES RESEARCH BOARD OF CANADA.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1977 0802022707 / 9780802022707 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good
342 pp, 10 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1898 a group of scientists, working without pay, often under hazardous conditions with only the most primitive equipment, began a systematic study of the fishes of Canada's inland and marine waters. The team operated under the aegis of a board of management which was later to evolve into the Fisheries Research Board, a scientific organization that has placed Candada among the world's leaders in fishery knowledge. This history of the Fisheries Research Board examines the aims and achievements of its research, its attempts to deal with the often conflicting demands of pure and applied science, and its confrontations with a frequently uncomprehending and dissatisfied government. The people who shaped and sustained the organization figure prominently in the account. In-depth taped interviews with senior members and employees, as well as the Annual Reports and other publications of the Department of Fisheries, have enabled (the author) to produce a rich history of a remarkable scientific organization." Very light wear at top/bottom of spine and at corners.

8 Nichol, Eric, editor. (Francis Dickens.) DICKENS OF THE MOUNTED: THE ASTONISHING LONG-LOST LETTERS OF INSPECTOR F. DICKENS NWMP, 1874-1886.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1989 0771068077 / 9780771068072 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
294 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map on front endpapers, reproductions of letters on rear endpapers. "Few people know that Charles Dickens had a son who served in the North-West Mounted Police in the days when the Canadian West was wild. Those historians who mention his twelve years in the force (1874-1886) dismiss him as a round peg in a square hole, a fat, stammering, slightly deaf, alcoholic Englishman with a tendency to fall off his horse in the course of tense confrontations with Indian warriors. These recently discovered letters home to England set the record straight, and reveal the true Dickens. Not only do these letters tell us much about the Dickens family, even to the point of parodying 'Pa's' purple prose, they also tell us a great deal about early Canada as Dickens saw it in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, and Winnipeg, and in forts all across the prairies. Dickens met everyone worth meeting in the West - including Crowfoot, Gabriel Dumont, Sam Steele, Jerry Potts, and Louis Riel - and even encountered famous visitors such as Sitting Bull, the Governor General, and Col. Harry Flashman (whom he calls 'a humbug'). And while he may have blotted his copy-book surrendering Fort Pitt to Riel's rebels, we learn here that he deserves credit for inspiring the Mounties' Musical Ride and the phrase 'a Mountie always gets his man'. Editor Nichol's wonderful skills have brought this man so alive that when we part from Frank Dickens at the end of the book, we do so with the sense of having lost a friend." Small area of light browning on top of text block. Dust jacket has tiny dent on rear panel, very minor edge wrinkling.

9 Stratford, Philip and Thomas, Michael, editors. (Jean-guy Pilon, Michele Lalonde, Louis Honore Frechette, Gabrielle Roy, Andre Laurendeau, Antonine Maillet, Jacques Ferron, Yvon Deschamps, Michel Tremblay, Claire Martin, Marcel Dube, et al.) VOICES FROM QUEBEC: AN ANTHOLOGY OF TRANSLATIONS.
Toronto Van Nostrand Reinhold 1977 0442298730 / 9780442298739 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
215 pp, 9 1/4" H. "(A) rich and fascinating insight into Quebec's sense of its own identity. An exuberantly cheeky history lesson by Yvon Deschamps, the popular entertainer and monologuist; a reasoned and impassioned essay on the attitudes encountered by French Canadians outside Quebec from the pen of the late Andre Laurendeau, one of the province's finest journalists; or a 'memoire' of early childhood experiences expressed with a cool sense of outrage by Claire Martin - all of these are among the many fine pieces of writing presented (here). They explore the major themes of Quebec life and thought from the past and present, as well as views on the shape of the future. The list of authors is, in itself, a spectacular tribute to the vitality of the province's literary tradition. Poets, story tellers, historians, journalists, entertainers, playwrights, song writers - each has a special focus and casts a special light on Quebec's life and heritage." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, tiny pen mark on top of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear wrinkling, two very small edge tears archivally taped, light rubbing/soiling.
