2 Bailey, Alfred Goldsworthy. THE CONFLICT OF EUROPEAN AND EASTERN ALGONKIAN CULTURES 1504-1700: A STUDY IN CANADIAN CIVILIZATION.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1969 802015069 Second Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good
218 pp, 10" H. "This study examines the conflict between the Europeans and the Indians precipitated by the arrival of the French in the New World. The Indians were necessarily affected by the fur trade and the religious and social development of New France, and the meeting of contrary cultures resulted in most cases in the obliteration of that of the Indian. However, a fusion of Indian and European elements sometimes occurred, resulting in the birth of a 'Canadian' culture. First published in 1937, this volume is a reprinting of the original text with the addition of an index and a chapter appraising some of the leading developments of the past few years." Contents: Preface to the First Edition; Reappraisals; The Aboriginal Population; Occasional Contact on the Gulf Coast; Acadia at the Turn of the Century; The Eastern Algonkians and the Balance of Power; The Displacement of Materials; Drunkeness and Regulation; Disease and Treatment; Political Modification, Social Disintegration; The Effect of Contact on the French; Religion; Art, Pictography, and Music; Mythology; Bibliography; Notes; Index. 4 Barbeau, Marius. New Introduction by George Clutesi. THE DOWNFALL OF TEMLAHAM.

253 pp, 7 5/8" H. Colour plates. "First published in 1928 (this) is the work of the distinguished Canadian ethnologist, the late Dr. Marius Barbeau. A prolific writer whose contribution to our knowledge of Indian and French-Canadian folklore, arts and crafts is unsurpassed, Barbeau offers in this book a sympathetic and dramatic portrayal of a vanquished race in conflict with itself. Based on the facts of a serious disturbance among the Indians of the Upper Skeena River in 1886, it is the story of Kamalmuk and Sunbeams, husband and wife, separated by opposing ambitions and the ambivalence of the Indian's attraction to the benefits of the white man's civilization and his revulsion against its excesses. Barbeau weaves into his interpretation of Temlaham, the ritual of authentic tribal customs and the expressive but poetic language of a people in anguish." THE GOLDEN PRINCESS., Baron, Alexander.
7 Baron, Alexander. THE GOLDEN PRINCESS.
Cape, London, 1954, first edition.
402 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "When Hernan Cortez landed in Mexico in 1519 he met an Indian slave girl, Marina, whose beauty and intelligence destined her to a remarkable career. Few records of her life exist, but she is still a l egendary figure among the people of Mexico. The background of her story is one of the most astonishing adventures in history, the conquest of the mighty Aztec empire by four hundred white men; an episode replete with the ingredients of roman c e - N a ture's barriers surmounted, feats of arms, fantastic stratagems, enemies overcome. In this novel, Alexander Baron sees Marina and Cortes not only as lovers but as adversaries in a terrible struggle. Cortes, one of history's classical h er oe s , i s de picted in all his power and glory, but the flaw in him, the seed of human weakness in the 'man of destiny', is laid bare. Against him stands Marina, primitive and untaught, but growing, with experience, in mental and moral stature; aw ake ni ng t o som ething to which her lover is blind - the human search for good - so that a conflict between them becomes inevitable. (The author's) approach to his theme is avowedly romantic. He believes that some aspects of the nature and dest iny of man ar e most truthfully revealed by the romantic vision. His novel abounds with big, vivid characters; but each of them is examined with insight, and is a unique, complex human being." STAND ON GUARD: THE SEARCH FOR A CANADIAN DEFENCE POLICY., Brewin, Andrew.
14 Brewin, Andrew. STAND ON GUARD: THE SEARCH FOR A CANADIAN DEFENCE POLICY.
McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, 1965, first edition.
140 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "In today's nuclear era, in a world now spending roughly $120 billion annually preparing for war, all other questions fade into insignificance in comparison with the problem of preventing conflict. Yet in this race toward annihilation Canada, with a limited budget and modest military strength, could carve for herself a new, significant and perhaps decisive role, if her military and political leaders could set aside tradition-bound c o n c e p t s , concentrating instead on the unique position Canada can hold on a world scale. Penetrating to the heart of our 'defence muddle', stripping away the military jargon that surrounds military discussions, Mr. Brewin traces Canada's m il it ar y ro le s in ce the formation of NATO in 1949, shows why the United States' concept of 'massive retaliation' has lost all practical meaning, and urges Canada to divorce herself from policies which are obsolete, provocative, and meaningles s. Sp eak in g a s o ne of the political leaders whose thoughts may play a major role in shaping this country's defence policies in the future, he outlines with persuasive clarity the factors which make it imperative for Canada to abandon tactical nu clea r we apo ns a nd c onc ent rate on developing a compact, efficient, highly mobile non-nuclear fighting force capable of tackling 'brushfire wars' anywhere in the world." University of Florida, Gainesville, 1975.
152 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0813003520 Map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "Until the Second Seminole War the United States Navy had generally employed the Federalist doctrine (cruiser-commerce-raiding), but the un iqueness of this Indian conflict caused the navy to adopt a new offensive strategy. For the first time in history the American Navy was pitted against a nonmaritime foe. There were no single merchantmen to attack; there were no cruisers t o e n g a g e in single-ship combat; there were no enemy fleets to be repelled from the nation's harbors. Instead, there were Indians practicing guerilla tactics in a watery environment - the Everglades of Florida. Athough it was not apparent at t h e be gi nn in g o f the war, the navy's only hope for victory lay in the development of a strategy for riverine warfare. It was a kind of warfare that demanded specially trained combat groups, organized for sustained land/sea operations. I t r equ ir ed jo int ac tio n wi th the army. It called for a naval command familiar with setting up and directing complex operations and diverse forces to achieve an overall objective. In developing a strategy of riverine warfare, United States Nav y po lic y e volv ed f rom a de fe nsi ve to an offensive position, from a society of highly individualistic and inflexible sea captains into a well-meshed cooperative unit capable of working not only alone but also with the army. Between 1835 and 1842, the nav y cam e of age. Leo Cooper, Barnsley, 2001, first edition.
252 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850528240 B&w plates, maps. "One hundred years ago, the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, along with many other British regiments, were fighting a desperate campaign many thousands of mi les from their native land. The Second Boer War tested the resolve and resources of what was then the mightiest Empire in the world. A succession of reverses raised the real spectre of defeat at the hands of the Boers; an unthinkable humi l i a t i o n . The depth of public interest and concern felt at the time is reflected in continual fascination in this conflict. Thus Martin Cassidy's careful editing of the graphic diaries of three members of the Regiment's 1st Battalion (two o ff ic er s an d on e p rivate soldier) is to be greatly welcomed. Through the differing angles of these fine accounts we witness not just the drama of battle but the harsh conditions that the British troops had to endure. To read first-hand record s o f t he ex tra or din ar y deeds such as those performed at Inniskilling Hill and the Relief of Ladysmith is a privilege that will mean much to those closely associated with the Regiment and to all with an interest in military history."
