"(T)he most comprehensive account ever published of the effect of this one man on the British Army during the Napoleonic era. This profusely illustrated study by Philip Haythornthwaite sets out to demonstrate Wellington's flexibility by showing the changes he employed in the various theatres in which he was active. As such, it is not another biography of this most celebrated soldier, but rather an assessment of how he altered the structure and equipment of his troops for each of his campaigns. Every aspect of his armies is explored - from the officers to the common soldiers; from the infantry to the cavalry; from military clergymen to the me dical services; as well as the attitude, morale and experiences of the troops. The author supplements his diligently researched analysis and detailed statistical coverage with contemporary accounts and quotations (many previously unpublished ) t o p r ovide a fresh look at one of the most colourful characters in European miltiary history..." "(The first book) to be devoted exclusively to the Battle of Corunna and to the short campaign which preceded it. Mr Hibbert has made extensive use of the many eye-witness accounts which survive in the form of official despatches, histories, diaries, memoirs and letters. With the aid of these, he not only shows a remarkable understanding of Sir John Moore and his fellow-officers, of their conflicting characters and views, but he also provides, through the eyes of officers and men alike, a horrifying picture of the hardships of this brief and bitter campaign. The narra-tive is made the more vivid by the numerous illustrations from contemporary paintings and engravings, and by the five specially prepared maps." "This is the story of one Corps and its Predecessors, which provided the British Army with m any of the essential elements for its logistic support over 200 years. Although it is primarily concerned with the activities of this one Corps in its varying significant roles, and its regimental life, the book gives an insight into the m u c h w i d e r picture of overall logistic support by many others necessarily concerned in the complex process of sustaining the Army in peace and war. Within a worldwide military and political framework, with widely contrasting settings, it a ls o hi gh l ig ht s th e problems in achieving the balance between political constraints and meeting operational requirements. Additionally, it illustrates the extent to which military Commanders' decisions can influence the success or failure of mil it ary op er ati ons b y t he right or wrong appreciation, selection and utilization of the appropriate logistic support. Covering the period that it does, it traces the development of logistic support from its simplest forms, to the wide ra nge of soph isti cat ed l and, se a an d a ir facilities required to meet the needs of the modern mobile and high-tech Army. How well the Royal Corps of Transport and its Predecessors met the challenges during their lifetime and played their proud par t i n hel ping to d evelo p the hig hly s ucce ssful logistics system that the British Army now possesses can be judged from their history related in this book." WAR AND ADMINISTRATION: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CRIMEAN WAR FOR THE BRITISH ARMY., Sweetman, John.
7 Sweetman, John. WAR AND ADMINISTRATION: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CRIMEAN WAR FOR THE BRITISH ARMY.
Scottish Academic Press, Edinburgh, 1984.
174 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Chart endpapers, two maps. "During the first half of the nineteenth century, administrative changes occurred in many British institutions, but the army remained basically unaffected. Only with the commencement of the Crimean War did changes in military administration take place, and these are generally believed to have been a direct result of correspondence from the front. The angry groundswell of public opinion, caused by despat c h e s s u ch as those from W.H. Russell of 'The Times', is seen to have demanded and achieved reform of an anachronistic and ramshackle system. In (this book, the author) challenges this popular interpretation of events, showing that the most im po rt an t c ha ng es happened before any actual fighting in the East. Certainly, revelations from the trenches were important, but only insofar as they provided the impetus for reform which had been necessary and sought before 1854. By putting th e r eco rd st ra igh t c oncerning events in the Crimea, and examining the political direction of military force in general, (he) has provided a valuable textbook for students of military history and strategic studies." Small bump at top/bottom of spin e an d a t c orn ers. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Very Good-/Very Good-
