1 Ansell, Mike, Colonel Sir. Foreword By H.R.H. The Prince Philip. SOLDIER ON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Peter Davies 1973 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
180 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). **Inscribed on half title page: "G_____ A_____ Best wishes Mike Ansell Oct. 14th 1973". B&w plates. "In June, 1940, when Colonel Mike had just been awarded the D.S.O. and was the youngest Commanding Officer in the Army, disaster struck: he was blinded in a hail of bullets at St Valery. The way he has overcome this handicap, and other more heartbreaking losses, is the inspiring theme of this book. For Colonel Mike has never failed to 'soldier on' in the face of adversities that would have broken lesser men. Whether catching salmon on the Torridge in Devon, creating the beautiful garden at his home near Bideford, planning a new show-jumping course with his specially designed magnetic board, attending St Dunstan's reunions or sitting in his study typing this book, to everything he does Colonel Mike bring his own unique brand of enthusiasm and professionalism - just as he did before the war, when, for example, he organised the famous Trick Ride for his regiment, the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, and show-jumped for England. Chairman of the British Show-Jumping Association and of the British Horse Society for some twenty-five years and now President of the British Equestrian Federation, he has done more than any other single man to make Britain one of the leading equestrian nations in the world, and to stimulate the ever-growing interest in riding as a competitive and leisure sport." Publishers' promotional material laid-in. Scattered tiny foxing marks on top third of both boards and on edges of text bkock, light wear at corners. Dust jacket has bee price-clipped, heavy creases at top corner of rear flap-fold, tiny foxing marks on top inside edge, some light edge wear/wrinkling, small closed tear on front hinge, small repair at top edge - archivally taped.

HMS SHEFFIELD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF 'OLD SHINY'., Bassett, Ronald.
2 Bassett, Ronald. HMS SHEFFIELD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF 'OLD SHINY'.
Arms and Armour, London, 1988, first edition.
224 pp, large 8vo (9 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0853689113 B&w maps and photographs. "The first HMS Sheffield was launched in 1936 to serve her flag bravely for thirty years. During World War Two, the cruiser became one of the mo st illustrious warships of all time, achieving twelve honours. In 1940, she fought in the action off Cape Spartivento; in the following year she shared in the audacious bombardment of Genoa, exchanged salvoes with Bismarck and sank one of that bat t leship's supply tankers, Friedrich Breme. In the Arctic a mine blew a 22-foot hole in her stern, but in an Icelandic fjord her crew fashioned a makeshift timber patch before steaming her back to Britain to fight again. In 1942, in the Barents Se a, Sheffield was in action against the 'pocket battleships' Admiral Hipper and Lutzow, and sank the German destroyer Friedrich Eckoldt. In 1943 she shared in the destruction of the battlecruiser Scharnhorst off North Cape and later supported carri er attacks upon Tirpitz. These, however, were but the highlights of this distinguished ship's wartime service. This book tells the story of her entire life and of her crews before, during and after World War Two - not from the detached perspective of an 'armchair historian', but from that of a writer who served at that time in a similar cruiser. Ronald Bassett was entrusted with research material accumulated over many years by an officer of Sheffield who died before those records could be turn ed into a book. Hundreds of her crew members, including several of her commanding officers, have contributed to this chronicle by means of their memoirs, diaries, letters, newspaper cuttings and photographs, enabling (the author) to paint an a ccura te and powerfully evocative portrait of a famous ship." Slight bump at bottom of spine, slight waviness to edges of text block, previous owner's label on free front endpaper, book cracked in several palces but page signatures are holding firm ly. D ust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, several small edge tears (two taped) and chips, light rubbing with some slight color loss on rear panel. Very Good-/Good+

349 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0964066505 Maps. "....a well-researched biography of the brilliant Hannibal as seen through the eyes of an interesting, yet fictional, officer. It retains a close fidelity to known facts ab out the life of one of the finest generals the world has ever known, but it reads like an historical novel....This book recreates the amazing life and times of this military genius, charismatic leader, astute manager of resources, efficien t p u b l i c a dministrator, and great champion of democracy. Most of what we know about Hannibal was written by his enemies over 2,000 years ago. Their writings show a grudging admiration for the brilliant Hannibal, but they are written from t he Ro ma n pe rs pe c ti ve, with the prejudices of his bitter enemies. 'Hannibal's Lieutenant' interprets the fascinating facts and situations as Hannibal and his supporters would have seen them, with their own prejudices. Once war was declared by h is gov er nme nt, Ha nn iba l became a victim of political gridlock and inaction by politicians of the Carthaginian government in Africa. Political enemies in Carthage, more than the Roman soldiers in Italy, were responsible for his failure t o d ef eat Rom e.. ..Ha nnib al c ome s al ive as the story follows his life: from his early years to commanding general of Carthaginian forces in Spain at age 25; from climbing the hazardous Alps with his army and elephants to invade Italy at age 26 t o f ight ing R oman s in Italy for 16 y ears with no major defeats; through public adminstrator in Carthage for seven years after the war, where he reformed the government by eliminating graft and corruption and changed it from rule by a privi leged few to t he mos t dem ocrat ic gov ernme nt in the Hellenistic world; from military consultant of the king of Syria in Ephesus where he accompanied the king during Syria's invasion of Greece and later led a fleet of warships in a sea battle to hi s ref uge on the is land o f Cret e; thro ugh hi s stin t as consultant to the king of Bithynia after fleeing Crete; and finally to his suicide at age 64 in 183 B.C." 9 Dezarrois, Andre, editor. Translated from the French by Philip John Stead. (Rene Mouchotte.) THE MOUCHOTTE DIARIES, 1940-1943.
London Staples Press 1956 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Fair
221 pp, 8 3/4" H. Frontispiece. "This is the famous Rene who was transformed by three years of war from an unknown pilot of the Reserve into one of the great leaders of Free France in the air, Pierre Clostermann's hero and commanding officer. In 1940 Rene made his daring escape from Oran in an unserviceable plane seized from under the very noses of the authorities. This was a flight not away from danger, but into the thick of the Battle of Britain. He fought with the R.A.F. in Hurricanes and Spitfires, attacking enemy shipping, sweeping over France, giving air-cover to the Dieppe landing, duelling with the Luftwaffe. His exceptional courage and integrity, his powers of leadership and skill as an aerial tactician quickly won the admiration of his superiors. Rene's airborne career culminated at Biggin Hill where he commanded the fighter wing and it was he who shot down the 1,000th German plane recorded by the fighter group there shortly before his death. In the end, his greatest wish was granted, for he had written in his diary: 'If I am not to survive the war, let me at least have the satisfaction of falling to the enemy's fire'. The personal magnetism and sincerity of 'Commandant Rene' make (this) an original and valuable contribution to the literature of the war in the air." Small crease at top corner of pages 11 to 34, very light browning to free endpapers, very small light glue stain on free rear endpaper, tiny dent on fore-edge of pages 55 to 64 - tiny chip on page leaf 59/60, very light browning to top of text block, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, minor rubbing on rear board. 10 Easton, Alan. Foreword by Rear-Admiral K.L. Dyer. 50 NORTH: AN ATLANTIC BATTLEGROUND. (CANADA'S ATLANTIC BATTLEGROUND.)
Toronto Ryerson Press 1963 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Fair Inscribed By Author
287 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). Inscribed on front free endpaper: "Archie Whelan / This describes a very different / environment in which you / & I worked together, but I / hope you'll like reading about it. / Your old friend / Alan Easton. / March 1963." B&w illustrations. "In this exciting book, Lieutenant-Commander Alan Easton of the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve tells of his experiences during the Second World War. The first ship he commanded was a corvette with faulty engines. His second corvette saw convoy action and battled both German U-boats and bad weather. Then Easton was given command of a destroyer which saw action in the English Channel on the day of the Normandy invasion. Easton gives a thrilling and detailed account of this successful naval engagement. But '50 North' is as much concerned with everyday life on board small warships as it is with the Atlantic battle as a whole. For this reason (it) is the first Canadian book of its kind. Easton is able to portray with vividness the seamen under him, their minor quarrels as well as the more important problems which occasionally develop between the crew and the commanding officers." Very light browning to edges of text block, small bump to top of front hinge, minor erinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has old tape repairs for large and small tears with creases, a few small edge chips, light browning, rubbing and soiling - mainly on rear panel, now protected in a mylar sleeve.

SHIP OF FORCE., Evans, Alan. Wraparound dust jacket art by Mike Trim.
11 Evans, Alan. Wraparound dust jacket art by Mike Trim. SHIP OF FORCE.
Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1979, first edition.
255 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0340234334 " 'Schwerttrager!' It is the summer of 1917, Britain is losing the war against the U-boats and Commander David Cochrane Smith listens to the delirious mumbling of a dying U-baot c ommander: 'Swordbearer'. Smith believes it is the code name for an operation, a threat to Britain, but nobody will listen to him. The threat haunts him. He meets a wild, beautiful, tragic girl and she solves a tiny part of the mystery, en o u g h t o set a clock ticking, counting down. Smith has come home with a bloody victory to his credit but he is still under suspicion of being reckless, a wild man, at best just lucky. He believes the answer to the U-boat lies in convoys but h e is g iv e n a f lotilla 'to take offensive action against U-boats and bases'. The flotilla turns out to be one ancient destroyer, a turtle-back 'thirty-knotter' known as 'Bloody Mary'. It is backed up by a 'ship of force', but that is no more t ha n a mo nit or , ne ar -new and with fifteen-inch guns. Her engines are defective, she is slow and spends more time in the dockyard than at sea. The flotilla is a sick joke; the two ships are the lepers of the Dover Patrol. With them Smith has to take on shor e b at ter ies and bigger, faster enemy destroyers. He has to fight the hostility of his commanding officer and is plunged into the world of espionage behind the enemy lines. Through it all the mystery behind 'Schwerttrager' lure s h im on unt il he sta kes his car eer and his life in a desperate attempt to solve it." Faint cigarette odor. 14 Fraser, William Douglas. NOR'EAST FOR LOUISBURG.
Toronto Amethyst 1978 0920474012 / 9780920474013 Soft Cover Very Good -
221 pp + section of b&w plans, photographs at rear, 8vo (9" H). B&w plans, maps, reproductions throughout text - plans and photographs at rear. "(A)n adventure tale of sweeping grandeur: the personal history of a youth who volunteered for war as a loyal subject of George II when New England rose against the French fortress of Louisburg commanding the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the approaches to Quebec and menacing the Boston fishery. The story is a romance in the true sense: it tells of the fears and awareness of a vast world opening to the mind of a young soldier and mariner early away from home and toughened by the cruelty and challenge of armed conflict and the harsh reality of the elements. The novel is based on a single page of pencil-written journal left behind by a young volunteer from Massachusetts: the author has not been able to determine the boy's name or where he lived but only that he served in Pomeroy's regiment at the capture of Louisburg in 1745. The history of Jonathan Steele unfolds as that of a God-fearing thoughtful man whose love of humanity does not blind him to the irony and tragedy of people living in difficult days, nor to their weakness or folly." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light to moderate edge wear, small soft corner crease on front cover, spine slightly twisted.

THE GATECRASHERS., Fullerton, Alexander. Dust jacket art by Michael Turner.
15 Fullerton, Alexander. Dust jacket art by Michael Turner. THE GATECRASHERS.
Michael Joseph, London, 1984, first edition.
297 pp + postscript, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718123786 Map endpapers. "Horribly cramped, it lurched sickeningly while being towed and tended to be dripping wet inside. The X-craft midget submarine was hardly the obvious choice of vessel to pitch against the mighty battleship 'Tirpitz' in her Norwegian lair. Like pitching a tadpole against a whale; but in this case, the whale had a soft underbelly and the tadpole a pair of two-ton explosive stings like blisters on its sides. If the sub could survive its nightmarish 1,000-mile haul across the North Sea, Paul Everard would have his chance to gatecrash the fjords - past minefields, patrol craft, shore defences and steel nets - and cripple the ship which Churchi ll had called 'the Beast'. Even if he succeeded, the chances of escaping alive were slim. If he failed, Nick Everard, commanding Arctic convoy PQ19, was in for a pounding. None of his ships could hope to match the firepower of the 'Tirpit z ' o r p i erce her fifteen-inch armour. As 'The Gatecrashers' draws to its thunderous climax, father and son, their lives balancing on a knife-edge, face their final, most searching test. 'The Gatecrashers' is based on the true story of Operat io n S ou rc e : si x X-craft crossed the North Sea in September 1943 to attack the 'Tirpitz, Scharnhorst' and 'Lutzow' in Altenfjord, where they were kept out of bomber range behind formidable defences. Although (this book) stands on its own as a nov el , it is al so th e ninth and last in the Everard series of naval adventures, which started with Nick as a somewhat bloody-minded midshipman at Jutland in 1916. Although fictional, the setting of each story is historically and technically ac cura te. Cap tai n J .E. Moo re, Editor of 'Jane's Fighting Ships', had written: 'I have not found this splendid authenticity in any naval fiction since C.S. Forester's heyday'." Faint cigarette odor. THE CRAWLEY AFFAIR., Haley, A.H.
18 Haley, A.H. THE CRAWLEY AFFAIR.
Seeley, Service, London, (1972), Ist edition.
230 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "India in 1861 was not a place where the whims of a British Cavalry Colonel could be lightly ignored. When Colonel Crawley took over command of the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons at Admednugger in April of that year the Regiment, already at odds with higher authority, was subjected to a man with a remarkably volatile temper and acid tongue. In a very short time the officers' mess was split into two opposing camps - a majority burning with resentment against their Commanding Officer and a few who supported him. Thus began a chain of events which led to the death of the Regimental Sergeant Major and which ended with a Court Martial in Aldershot on which was focussed the fullglare of Victorian publicity, at once prudish and purient. Mr. Haley skilfully weaves together the personal tragedy of RSM Lilley and his wife with the invidious position of Senior Officers who became personally involved in the problems of Colonel Crawley and were gradually manoeuvred into supporting him in order to maintain their own reputations..." 235 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w photographs. "As Senior Intelligence Officer of 35 Wing, Irving studied and furthered the technical and tactical resources of low level photographic reconnaissance and the prompt distribution of intelligence derived from it. The unacceptable casualties incurred by 35 Wing in supporting the raid on Dieppe were proof of the tardy recognition by Army/Air planning staffs of the need for total co-operation between the Services in action if the liberation of Europe was to be achieved. The theme of this book is the contribution of 35 Wing to the preparation and achievement of Operation Overlord, the reconnoitring of V1 missile sites in France that subsequent bombing rendered inoperable and, above all, its services to 1st Canadian Army throughout the ensuing campaign. This personal record reflects an abiding memory and admiration for the skills, the devotion to duty, the light hearted companionship and dauntless courage of pilots inspired by exemplary and discerning commanding officers." Slight bump to bottom corner of rear board, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling.
