5 Bergstein, Rachelle. WOMEN FROM THE ANKLE DOWN: THE STORY OF SHOES AND HOW THEY DEFINE US.
New York Harper 2012 0061969613 / 9780061969614 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Nami Matsuo Scott.
284 pp, 9 1/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "What is it about a pair of shoes that so enchants women of all ages, demographics, political affiliations, and style tribes? Part social history, part fashion record, part pop-culture celebration, (this book) seeks to answer that question as it unfolds the story of shoes in the twentieth century. The tale begins in the rural village of Bonito, Italy, with a visionary young shoe-maker named Salvatore Ferragamo and ends in New York City with a fictional socialite and trend-setter named Carrie Bradshaw. Along the way it stops in Hollywood, where Judy Garland first slipped on her ruby slippers; New Jersey, where Nancy Sinatra heard something special in a song about boots; and the streets of Manhattan, where a transit-worker strike propelled women to step into cutting-edge athletic shoes. Beginnng with the well-heeled suffragettes in the 1910s, women have fought for greater freedom and mobility, a struggle that exploded in the 1960s with the women's liberation move-ment and culminated in the new millenium with our devotion to personal choice. Featuring interviews with designers, historians, and cultural experts, and a cast of real-life characters, from Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, from Gwen Stefani to Manolo Blahnik, (it) is a lively, compelling look at the evolution of modern woman and the fashion that reflects - and has shaped - their lives." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - also tiny tear at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top of hinges, minor rubbing.

"Credited with seventy-two victories, Canadian ace Billy Bishop ranked fourth among Allied and German aces of World War I. Long out of prin t, this aviation classic has been expanded with new photographs and updated by supplementary material on First World War planes and pilots....(Bishop, who received every British decoration of valor, including the Victoria Cross) was also a sk i l l f u l writer and 'Winged Warfare' vividly recreates those early days - both comic and tragic - when the deadly 'airborne jalopy' was getting its trial run. He describes the dank, slimy and boggy mud that soured him on land combat. And the w ri ti ng c ra ck l es when (he) relives flying his Nieuport Scout, armed with a single Lewis gun. It was in this tiny plane that he dodged the 'Archies' (German anti-aircraft batteries and outfought and outmaneuvered the scarlet-winged Fokkers flo wn by Bar on von Ri ch thofen's formidable squadron. Here, too, are the joys and terrors of daily dogfights, a life of extraordinary contrasts. Complete with a chronology of World War I, Bishop's confirmed victories, airplanes flown by Bishop in Wor ld War I, list s by co untry of Allied and enemy aces, and aircraft specifications and data." Dover, New York, 1962.
216 pp + publisher's catalog, 8vo (8 7/16" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated with Busch's b&w cartoons. Bilingual text (English/German). "Wilhelm Busch (1832-1908), endowed with an equipotent facility with sketch-pad and rhyming dictionary, c reated during his career some of the most arresting sketches and drollest verses the world has ever seen. Few men since his time have shown the same ability to match simple yet penetrating pictures with rollicking, quotable verse. In his n a t i v e G e rmany he is still by all odds the best-loved creator of illustrated light verse....(Many of his pithy aphorisms have long since become folk sayings among the Germans.) The variety of tone and subject matter is wide: Busch is in tur n ma le vo le nt , j ov ial, sardonic, diabolical and even bloodthirsty as he castigates hypocrisy, stodginess, stupidity, egotism, drunkenness, and other human foibles....The English translations are both ingenious and faithful; in most cases they a re the fi rst En gl ish tr anslations ever made. Those who do not read German may be certain that the original has been translated into English with its spiciness and sense intact. Both the German and the English appear side by side, so that re ade rs o f Ge rman may sa vor Busc h's own delightful rhymes, while those who are learning German will find it an enjoyable way to gain familiarity with the langauge...." 9 Cheadle, Walter B. Introduction and notes by A.G. Doughty and Gustave Lanctot. Introduction to new edition by Lewis H. Thomas. CHEADLE'S JOURNAL OF TRIP ACROSS CANADA, 1862-1863.
Edmonton M.G. Hurtig 1971 0888300352 / 9780888300355 First Thus Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
311 pp, 7 5/8" H. B&w illustrations, fold-out map at rear."The incredible journey of William Fitzwilliam, Viscount Milton, and his long-suffering companion, Dr. Walter Butler Cheadle, over the uncharted Yellowhead route in 1862-63 was a highly improbable, miraculously successful expedition, well-seasoned with comic relief though it very nearly ended several times in tragedy. Dr. Cheadle's 'Journal' first appeared in 1931, sixty-six years after publication of 'The North-West Passage by Land', a bestselling account of the expedition supposedly co-authored by the young Lord Milton and his companion. Besides confirming suspicions that the first book was in fact Cheadle's, the 'Journal' is more candid about the two adventurer's motives ('we were a mere party of pleasure'), and a much more precise record of life and travel in the Northwest during the latter days of the fur trade era. Cheadle acknowledges the heavy debt owed by all of the early explorers to the plains Indians, who passed on to the first white men their sophistication in the ways of the wilderness. He also records the gradual demoralization of the native people under the impact of European culture. His own Assiniboine guide was an invaluable support to Cheadle, who had to cope not only with Lord Milton's constant petulance and frequent illness, but with the most obnoxious hitchhiker ever to cross the Rockies." On or two small faint areas of browning on edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear and tiny tears/creases - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds (archivally taped), slight fading to spine color, faint small writing impressions on front panel.

THE WASHINGTON STING., Conconi, Charles and House, Toni.
11 Conconi, Charles and House, Toni. THE WASHINGTON STING.
Coward, McCann & Geoghegan, New York, 1979, second impression.
255 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Here is the dramatic and only inside account of the undercover police-FBI fencing operation - featuring cops in the guise of syndicate soldiers - whose stunning success put the 'Washington Sting' in headlines across the nation. Word was out on the street in Washington, D.C., that one of the best fences in years was working out of a warehouse on 25th Place, NE. PFF Inc., run by 'mob-connected' Italians, was buyi n g u p s t o len guns, office equipment, anything with resale value. Thieves all over the Washington area were soon submitting to the hard dealing of the gun-wielding Mafiosi, looking for quick cash and an association with the mighty aristocracy o f c ri me . As t he fence's main man, Pasquale Larocca, critically examined the typewriter or rifle offered across his bulletproof counter, and in one corner Mike Franzino cradled his shotgun in casual warning, there was no suspicion of a weapo n d ea dl y i n a d i ffe ren t way: a videotape machine which recorded every transaction from behind an unnoticed one-way mirror. 'Pasquale Larocca' and 'Mike Franzino' were the aliases of two of the undercover team of police and FBI men organize d to fi ght Was hing ton 's hig h la rceny statistics down at the underworld source. And five months after the opening of 'Police-FBI Fencing, Incognito' - five months of tense bargaining with suspicious professionals and comic encounters with f awnin g fl unki es an d pro stit ute s - t he fe nce closed around more than 200 criminals invited to meet a New York 'Don' at a party hosted by Larocca. They met, instead, with police. The single account of the caper written with the cooperation of the poli ce an d FBI and wi th fu ll a ccess to the incriminating videotapes, here is a true story of police politics and mayhem, streetwise ingenuity and volatile temperaments, told to authentic narrative effect with complete, uncensored detai l." 12 Crumb, R. (Robert Dennis) THE BOOK OF GENESIS.
New York W.W. Norton 2009 0393061027 / 9780393061024 4th Printing Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ R. Crumb.
Unpaginated, 11 1/8" H. "Envisioning the first book of the Bible like no one before him, R. Crumb, the legendary illustrator, retells the story of Genesis in a profoundly honest and deeply moving way. Originally thinking that he would do a takeoff of Adam and Eve, Crumb became so fascinated with the Bible's language, 'a text so great and so strange that it lends itself readily to graphic depictions', that he decided instead to do a literal interpretation assembled primarily from the translations of Robert Alter and the King James Version. Now readers of every persuasion - Crumb fans, comic book lovers, and believers - can gain astonishing new insights from these harrowing, tragic and even juicy stories." Profusely illustrated in b&w comic strip fashion at an "adult" level, with an Introduction and Commentary by Crumb. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.

ALCHEMIST OF WAR: THE LIFE OF BASIL LIDDELL HART., Danchev, Alex.
13 Danchev, Alex. ALCHEMIST OF WAR: THE LIFE OF BASIL LIDDELL HART.
Weidenfeld & Nicolson, London, 1998, first edition.
369 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297816217 B&w photographs, reproductions. "Basil Liddell Hart was a rare bird: military writer, creative artist, journalist, propagandist, controversialist, archivist, adviser, exemplar, and thrower of stones. A war poet in prose - his best work carried a comparable charge - his writing engaged and enraged three generations. Like a true poet, his voice lingers. His language and his leanings saturate later thought, often unwittingly. Liddell Hart is the Bertrand Russell of his field: he is all-pervasive. Young people who looked up to him (in every sense) were often reminded of a stork - benign, fastidious, outlandish, perhaps even a little comic; undeniably impressive . He dressed well. He dined well. He tipped well. He consorted with Lawrence of Arabia. His womenfolk looked enchanting: he chose their clothes. For the Captain who taught Generals was an expert in more fields than one. He was also a leading authority on fashion - in particular, the corset. Liddell Hart had a sophisticated appreciation of l'artillerie de nuit. Like all great artists, his best ideas were other people's, made matchlessly his own. (This) is the first biography of this remarkable man: a brilliant evocation of a life more succulent, and more subversive, than we ever knew." Tiny bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has small wrinkle at top edge of rear flap, two 1" parallel knife scratches on rear panel. Near Fine /Very Good+

THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE., Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.)
15 Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.) THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1993 0802074618 / 9780802074614 First Paperback Edition. Soft Cover Very Good+
275 pp, 8vo (9" H). "Anne Shirley is the best known of a memorable group of heroines created by Lucy Maud Montgomery, a group that includes Emily Byrd Starr, Valancy Stirling, and Pat Gardiner. These characters are at the centre of Epperly's book, the first full-length critical study of all L.M. Montgomery's fiction. Epperly contends that Montgomery was a master of the romance genre, and through her use of literary allusions, repetitions, irony, and comic inversions she deftly manipulated the normal conventions of romance novels. By studying the fictional biographies of the heroines and their pursuit of romance, Epperly question the ways romance shapes what we consider valuable in our imaginings and experience. A book written for L.M. Montgomery fans and scholars." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, clean and bright.

16 Evans, Hilary and Evans, Mary. THE LIFE AND ART OF GEORGE CRUIKSHANK 1792-1878.
New York S.G. Phillips 1978 0875992277 / 9780875992273 Hard Cover Very Good Good George Cruikshank
192 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions. "When George Cruikshank died, (over) a hundred years ago, he was admired as an artist, respected as a reformer, loved as a man. But he had lived so long and created so much that few could discern any unity underlying the diverse creations of his seventy-year working life - creations ranging from a thumbnail caricature of Napoleon III ('it never reigns but it bores!') to the four-metres-wide 'Worship of Bacchus' which now hangs, dusty and neglected, in the storerooms of the Tate Gallery. For some he was the artist who showed us Oliver Twist asking for mroe; for some the whimsical delineator of elves and fairies; for others the fanatical reformer who drew 'The Bottle' to convert us all from the Demon Drink. Everything he created was a spontaneous response to the world he saw. It might be something trivial, as when he went on a day-trip to Boulogne - the only time he left English soil! - and memorialized the event in a masterly sketch of seasick travellers (which perhaps explains why the adventure was never repeated). Or it might be on a deeper level, as when he symbolises in 'The Drunkard's Children' all the horrors of modern industrial society. It is his ability to see the world both as it is and as it might be which is the greatness of Cruikshank, both as a man and as an artist, and this book sets out to reveal the continual development of his art as a reflection of his continual development as a man. It therefore takes the form of a running commentary on pictures which are themselves a running commentary on the artist's outward and inward life. From more than two hundred pictures, one of the widest selections of his work ever brought together, Cruickshank emerges, not just as one of the world's greatest illustrators, but as a visionary artist whose work, at first glance so light and casual, reveals a profound sympathy and understanding of human life." Minor bump at top bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump, some light rubbing on rear board. Dust jacket has light edge wear, moderate edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, light fading to spine and flap-fold color, 2" puckered triangular closed tear and small puncture with associated rub line on rear panel, 1" tear at bottom of front flap fold, minor rubbing and soiling on rear panel.

Wu ll y e lo ok at yon!), or falling hapless victim to the plots of poachers and illicit distillers in the wilds of darkest Perthshire, McAuslan's talent for comic catastrophe is as sure as ever, waking happy memories of an Army life and chara cte r s t hat ar e fas t f a ding away."
