A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF AMERICA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 553., Bartholomew, J.G. Revised By Samuel McKee.
1 Bartholomew, J.G. Revised By Samuel McKee. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF AMERICA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 553.
London J.M. Dent & Sons 1930 Revised and Enlarged Edition. Hard Cover Good Very Good
242 pp, 6 13/16" H. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 8 plates depicting coins. "The transformation, bit by bit, of a wilderness into the category of a Europeanized civilization may be comprehended from a series of maps which shows the ever advancing line of settlement as it first gnawed away the forests of the sea coast, and then after trickling through mountain passes, seeped across the plains to be stopped finally by the Pacific Ocean. Waterways, roads, and more recently, the railroads, have contributed to the movement of the past towards the fulfilment of the present. The following maps portray the expanding movements of new nations as two continents were wrested from a wilderness. The coloured maps locate states, towns, waterways, advancing frontiers, routes of travel, population densities, and industries. The black and white maps, besides those showing battle alignments and military campaigns, contain many specimens of early maps with their quaint antiquarian charm." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinage of North and South America" by G.C. Brooke, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in America having a Literary or Historic Interest", "Contributions to the Literature of the United States" and an Index. Book is lightly cocked, light browning to edges of text block, light edge wear, very small old ink mark on bottom of text block, rubbing with slight color loss on covers, cloth is split on hinges - repaired, small edge tear on free front endaper - archivally taped. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny chip at top of spine, slight fading to spine and flap-fold color.

The famous Good Friday processions at Seville, the great Prado museum, the caves of Altamira, the gipsies, the appearance of a land still recovering from the ravages of civil war - all these are subjects for Frank Clune's vivid description. He writes, too, of Spain's great past; of the Christian Reconquest after the period of Moorish domination; of Ferdinand and Isabella, the 'Catholic Sovereigns'; of Magellan and Columbus; of Cervantes and El Greco. But whether he is describing the cool glories of Gothic architecture in medieval times or the hot excitement of a bullfight a t the present day, he preserves his happy knack of making the reader share his own sense of curiosity and wonder..." 9 Kohn, Wendy, editor. (Moshe Safdie, Michael Sorkin, Paul Goldberger, Peter G. Rowe, Witold Rybczynski.) MOSHE SAFDIE.
London Academy Editions 1996 1854904531 / 9781854904539 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Signed by Author
344 pp, folio (13 1/4" H). Signed on half title page: "Moshe Safdie / March 1997". "Influenced by the diverse cultures of Canada, Israel and the USA, Moshe Safdie's architecture displays a richly evolving tectonic and spatial sensibility. During 30 years of practice, he has designed public institutions, housing and mixed-use complexes, and developed designs for both existing urban districts and entirely new citities. In this monograph more than 40 of his projects are illustrated with spectacular photography, original design sketches and text. These works include his seminal Habitat project for the Canadian Expo '67, the National Gallery of Canada, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Vancouver's Library Square in Caada; the Yad Vashem Children's Holocaust Memorial, the Restoration of the Jewish Quarter, Mamilla Center and Hebrew Union College in the city of Jerusalem; the Skirball Museum and Cultural Center in Los Angeles; and the urban designs for Montreal, Senegal, Singapore and the new city of Modi'in in Israel. Together, they demonstrate the depth of Safdie's work, and an architectural vocabulary full of light and colour. In his essay 'The Language and Medium of Architecture' and in an interview with Wendy Kohn, Moshe Safdie discusses his architecture and influences. Each of the essays, by Michael Sorkin, Paul Goldberger, Witold Rybczynski and Peter G. Rowe, covers a different facet of Safdie's architectural oeuvre." Two tiny dents at top edge of rear board, very minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light rubbing, minor edge wear/wrinkling.

10 Lunenfeld, Marvin. THE COUNCIL OF THE SANTA HERMANDAD: A STUDY OF THE PACIFICATION FORCES OF FERDINAND AND ISABELLA.
Coral Gables Univesity of Miami Press 1970 0870241435 / 9780870241437 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
134 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. "The role of the Council was to govern the Holy Brotherhood, the kingdom-wide police force (of Renaissance Spain). The Council guided the colorful Brotherhood in pacifying Castile, and, while so doing, created a royal army for the conquest of Granada, the prototype of the great Spanish infantry that dominated Europe for centuries. The fact that Queen Isabella borrowed the money for Columbus' voyage from the treasury of the Brotherhood is an incidental, but not insignificant contribution to the Brotherhood in history. (The author) brings into question long-established theories concerning the social groups affected by the police and the extent to which the urban patriciate willingly cooperated with the crown in meeting Council demands. He documents reasons for believing that the Holy Brotherhood remained relatively more independent of royal control than had been previously assumed. He also provides a vivid description of the court, cities, and lawless countryside of fifteenth-century Castile." Previous owner's name on free front endpaper. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light edge wrinkling along top edge, two tiny closed tears with creases, light rubbing.

Cassell, London, 1958, first edition.

In the first, the author gives an idea of the background of the West Indies by drawing a detailed picture of the colourful life of Martinique. He then goes on to the history of the islands from the time of their discovery by Columbus at the end of the 15th century; the 16th-century Spanish rule which saw the extermination of the aborigines in the Greater Antilles, the introduction of sugar cane, and the notorious slave trade with the Guinea Coast; the 17th-century challenge of France and England when the Leeward and Windward Islands were disputed - the age of buccaneers; the prosperity and battles of the 18th century, and the movement of id eas with the French Revolution, which led to the liberation of the slaves and the decline of the islands as the planters returned to Europe. He tells the story of a 17th-century Frenchman who joined the famous pirates of Tortuga, and the h i s t o r y o f the long bloodbath that prceeded the declaration of independence of Haiti, the Black Republic. The second part of the book comprises four character sketches, including three stories of black magic, and two sections deal with the i nd iv id ua l ch a rm a nd interest of each of the islands: Montserrat, Barbados, Anguilla, Trinidad, St. Vincent, Tortola, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Saba, Antigua, Dominica and Puerto Rico."
