(This book) describes an intriguing and fascinating selection of aircraft and the reasons for their inclusion here. 4 Bowyer, Chaz. BOMBER BARONS.
Barnsley, South Yorkshire Leo Cooper 2001 085052802X / 9780850528022 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
222 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "By the end of the Second World War, a grim total of 55,000 air crew of Bomber Command has lost their lives. This figure comprised no less than seventy per cent of RAF fatalities. Yet, unlike their more glamorous fighter pilot colleagues, very few bomber pilots or crewmen were familiar household names to the general public. However, within the ranks of the RAF itself, some individuals stood out gaining high reputations for their courage and leadership, a respect achieved regardless of the decorations they had won or the number of sorties flown. These were the 'Bomber Barons'. In this authoritative book, (the author) chooses a selection of these men. Some like Leonard Cheshire, Guy Gibson and Hughie Edwards, are today well known but others such as Nick Knilans, Syd Clayton and Jo Lancaster, are familiar only to those 'in the know'. For each, the author details their careers and relates episodes that reflect the qualities that made them outstanding. At the same time, the reader learns of the unfolding dramatic development of Bomber Command from the comparatively uncoordinated, non-cohesive raids of the early part of the war to the highly-trained and deadly offensive weapon it became under Sir Arthur Harris, from 1942 AOC-in-C of Bomber Command, and the Greatest Baron of them all." Small very light stain in margin of page 16. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, a few very tiny dints, very minor rubbing.

548 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. Of the 1,350 Victoria Crosses awarded since 1856, only 51 have been conferred on airmen. "Here, for the first time, are the complete and accurate biographies of each of those 51 men. Though primarily regarded as a British honour, of those 51 airmen, 16 were not British-born; coming from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Eire willingly to pledge their lives in Britain's cause during the two major world wars of this century. Resulting from several decades of private research on an international scale, and profusely illustrated, this book has undoubtedly become the standard reference work on the subject of air VCs. It also provides a lasting record of their lives and astonishing courage - a permanent tribute to every airman ever awarded a Victoria Cross." Very minor wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light rubbing.

2 GROUP R.A.F. A COMPLETE HISTORY, 1936-1945. (RAF), Bowyer, Michael J.F.
7 Bowyer, Michael J.F. 2 GROUP R.A.F. A COMPLETE HISTORY, 1936-1945. (RAF)
Somerton, Somerset Crecy 1992 0947554254 / 9780947554255 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
532 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2' H). B&w photographs, maps. "No. 2 Group was formed in Bomber Command to support the Army. After equipping with Blenheims it specialized in daylight operations. It engaged in the first raid of the war. After taking part in the Norweigan campaign, it was thrown into the struggle to save France. Heavy losses ensued during operations demanding great courage. A hazardous anti-shipping campaign took the Group to Malta. Night intruder operations were made against airfields, and fighter-escorted attacks on Occupied Territory continued until the 1944 Allied landings in France, where support to the invasion was subsequently given and an effective night interdictor campaign carried out. The Group mounted many spectacular operations, particularly when using Mosquitoes. This is indeed a story of immense courage. Based upon records maintained by Royal Air Force Commands, Groups and Squadrons together with personal accounts by those who flew with the Group, the book gives a detailed day-by-day picture of operations, their planning and execution, illustrated with detailed maps. Appendices give plentiful details of the aircraft, the squadrons and the Group's wartime effort." Three small dints on rear board, light rubbing. Dust jacket has three small dints on rear panel, large crease at top corner of rear flap/panel, light edge wrinkling, one tiny closed tear, light rubbing.

9 Halpenny, Bruce Barrymore. Foreword by Wing Commander Ken Wallis. TO SHATTER THE SKY: BOMBER AIRFIELD AT WAR.
Cambridge Patrick Stephens 1984 0850596785 / 9780850596786 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
233 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). Many b&w photographs. "Beginning with a general description of a typical wartime bomber airfield, (this book) goes on to relate in their own words the personal stories of several crews and their missions. The locales vary, as do the targets, the results and the nationalities of the raconteurs, but the overall image is one of an Empire of bold young men treading where Goring boasted no enemy would succeed in treading. All the courage, drama, tragedy and, indeed, humour of war is contained in this compelling documentary which will appeal both to modern historians and enthusiasts as well as to those who remember the dark but strangely exhilarating days which it recalls." Bump at bottom of spine, tiny bump at bottom corners of boards and at top of spine, very tiny tear/wrinkle at top of page 111/112. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

THE THREE-STAR BLITZ: THE BAEDEKER RAIDS AND THE START OF TOTAL WAR 1942-1943., Whiting, Charles.
12 Whiting, Charles. THE THREE-STAR BLITZ: THE BAEDEKER RAIDS AND THE START OF TOTAL WAR 1942-1943.
Leo Cooper, London, 1987.
184 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 085052881X B&w photographs. "The German attempt to break the morale of the British by bombing London in 1940 did not succeed, so two years later, they switched their targets to the und efended cathedral cities of Exeter, Bath, York, Canterbury and Norwich, cities marked in Karl Baedeker's famous guidebook with three stars. Hence the name by which they came to be known. This time the British were not slow to retaliate and t h e p u n ishment rained down upon the unfortunate people of Hamburg and Cologne surpassed in ferocity anything that had gone before. From now on the morale of the civil population came to be regarded as a legitimate target in the battle to bre a k th e e ne my 's will. Charles Whiting describes in detail the Baedeker raids on the cathedral cities of England and the retaliatory raids on Germany, illustrating his story with the recollections of many of those who survived the raids. He an al ys es th e per son ali ties of the Top Brass on both sides who authorized the bombings and shows how the change in attitude to indiscriminate bombing gradually came about. It is a gruesome yet fascinating story, told with all the vividness which re ade rs of Ch arle s Wh itin g's books will have come to expect." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling. Very Good+/Very Good+
