14 Cole, Jean Murray. EXILE IN THE WILDERNESS: THE BIOGRAPHY OF CHIEF FACTOR ARCHIBALD McDONALD, 1790-1853.
Don Mills, Ontario Burns & MacEachern 1979 0887680844 / 9780887680847 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
268 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "At the age of twenty-two, Archibald McDonald was responsible for the health and well-being of all ninety-four members of the 1813 party of Lord Selkirk's ill-fated Red River settlement. (He) responded to this heavy burden as he did to all the other difficulties that he experienced in his life as adminstrator and fur trader in the days of the Red River settlement and the early history of the Pacific Northwest - with an engaging combination of practicality, good humor, and hard work. Drawing extensively from McDonald's letters, reports, and diaries, (the author) lets the subject of this biography tell his own story: of the enmity between the Red River settlers and the violent, vindictive Nor-Westers, who were determined to destroy the Red River colony; of his years of service in the Hudson's Bay Company, where he became commander of forts on the Lower Fraser and Columbia Rivers; and of the long canoe voyages through the untamed Canadian wilderness." Dust jacket has one small edge tear archivally taped, minor edge wear/wrinkling, tiny scuff at top of rear hinge.

16 Freeman, Lewis R. THE NEARING NORTH.
New York Dodd, Mead 1928 First Edition Hard Cover Good Byron Harmon, photography.
385 pp, 8 3/4" H. Dark blue cloth with gold lettering on front board. B&w photographs. American explorer and adventurer, Lewis R. Freeman, deterimned to explore the river routes to the Arctic one summer, using "summer steamboat services on the Peace, Athabaska, Slave and Mackenzie", taking a folding canvas boat and an outboard motor for sections where that was not possible. "This would leave (him) fifteen hundred miles of the Saskatchewan and Nelson to voyage in a small craft, with whatever runs could be worked in between steamers and steamer-stops on the other rivers as well. Covering seven or eight thousand miles of river even in this hybrid fashion of navigation would still promise a lively and eventful half summer: in fact, one would have to reckon on running right along to freeze-up to make it at all." Book is lightly cracked in a few places but pages are firmly held, faint erased pencil mark on front free endpaper, slight darkening and a few tiny foxing marks on top of text block, very light browning to other edges of text block, some shelf soiling on bottom of text block, gold lettering on spine is fully faded, light edge wear, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few tiny foxing marks throughout pages, foxing in gutter of page 180.

17 Glover, Michael. WELLINGTON'S PENINSULAR VICTORIES: BUSACO - SALAMANCA - VITORIA - NIVELLE. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1963 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
192 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H). "In the course of the Peninsular War, Wellington became the most celebrated general in British history. When he landed in Lisbon in April 1809, however, there seemed little reason to suppose that the British could maintain their foothold in Portugal, still less to imagine that the French could be driven out of the Peninsula and across the Pyrenees. Since 1793 the British army had experienced a long succession of defeats and reverses. Before Wellington could take the field he had first to overhaul the entire organization of his forces. His allies' troops were ill-led, ill-trained and ill-equipped. His atttempts to co-operate with his Spanish colleagues were stultified by rivalry and distrust. Michael Glover has written a lucid narrative of the difficulties and set-backs of the five years' campaigning that brought the allies to Toulouse in April 1814. Against this background are full-scale accounts of the four battles - Busaco, Salamanca, Vitoria and the Nivelle - in which Wellington defeated his principal opponents of the War - Massena, Marmont, Jourdan and Soult. The officers and men who served in the Peninsula left behind them many absorbing and often moving eyewitness descriptions, and it is on these, no less than on his long acquaintance with the secondary sources of the history of the War, that (he) has based his study of the battles. The numerous illustrations, taken from the supreme period of military art, are themselves of outstanding interest and, with the six maps and plans in the text, complement a perceptive account of Wellington and his army." Light edge wear, previous owner's name stamp on front pastedown, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has browning to the spine and edges, light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few very small edge tears.

243 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. B&w photos. "Written primarily by Daisy Phillips, with a few by her husband Jack, to her family in England, these letters describe the creation of a shortlived English home in the Windermere Valley of southwestern B ritish Columbia. From Daisy's frank descriptions we learn of the experiences of the Phillips and their neighbours in settling the newly opened land and of their attempts to grow fruit in an area of limited agricultural potential....Between her first request for a pamphlet on laundering handkerchiefs and her departure less than three years later, (Daisy) learned to cook on a wood stove, sew, clean house, and wash clothes without running water or servants. Gradually, the cultural barriers were breaking down as the Phillips became more involved in sharing the experience of being pioneer Canadians..."
