1 Appleby, Edna (Hill). CANMORE: THE STORY OF AN ERA.
Canmore, Alberta Self-published 1975 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good- Signed by Author
163 pp, 11 1/4" H. Signed by author on front free endpaper. B&w photographs, reproductions, fold-out school group (1926) photograph facing title page. Records the history of town of Canmore and the surrounding area. "Once located within the boundaries of Rocky Mountain Park, you observe Canmore changing from a CPR town into the only thriving coal mining town of the entire Bow Valley. Pictures and records of the once existing towns of Bankhead, Anthracite, Georgetown and Kananaskis are spotlighted as they enhanced the development of Canmore itself into the town it now is. The history of Exshaw and its cement plant is also recorded. Traced throughout the book is the development of the Canmore Mines from 1887 to 1974 with a subjective view of the miner and his contribution to Canmore." Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light to moderate edge wear and rubbing, a few very small dents and small hole on rear panel, several medium tears/creases with old tape repair at top of rear panel, two very small stains on rear panel.

Toronto Ryerson Press 1959 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good- Good-
204 pp, 8 5/8" H. B&w photographs. "Urged many times to write the story of his life, Mr. Robert Campbell, now in his eighty-eighth year, finally acceded to the request. The result is this very readable book of reminiscence, rich in humour and history, adventure and anecdote, told by a master storyteller. In a breezy and colloquial style the author tells of his experiences in and around Banff, of his political life, experiences in the army during World War I, and his encounters with important visitors in the Canadian Rockies. This is not only a fascinating story, but a valuable record of early days when the Rockies were just beginning to attract attention as a tourist centre for the world." 8 Evans, Alan. Wraparound dust jacket art by Mike Trim. SHIP OF FORCE.
Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1979, first edition.
255 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0340234334 " 'Schwerttrager!' It is the summer of 1917, Britain is losing the war against the U-boats and Commander David Cochrane Smith listens to the delirious mumbling of a dying U-baot c ommander: 'Swordbearer'. Smith believes it is the code name for an operation, a threat to Britain, but nobody will listen to him. The threat haunts him. He meets a wild, beautiful, tragic girl and she solves a tiny part of the mystery, en o u g h t o set a clock ticking, counting down. Smith has come home with a bloody victory to his credit but he is still under suspicion of being reckless, a wild man, at best just lucky. He believes the answer to the U-boat lies in convoys but h e is g iv e n a f lotilla 'to take offensive action against U-boats and bases'. The flotilla turns out to be one ancient destroyer, a turtle-back 'thirty-knotter' known as 'Bloody Mary'. It is backed up by a 'ship of force', but that is no more t ha n a mo nit or , ne ar -new and with fifteen-inch guns. Her engines are defective, she is slow and spends more time in the dockyard than at sea. The flotilla is a sick joke; the two ships are the lepers of the Dover Patrol. With them Smith has to take on shor e b at ter ies and bigger, faster enemy destroyers. He has to fight the hostility of his commanding officer and is plunged into the world of espionage behind the enemy lines. Through it all the mystery behind 'Schwerttrager' lure s h im on unt il he sta kes his car eer and his life in a desperate attempt to solve it." Faint cigarette odor. Toronto Queen's Printer 1984 0774389648 / 9780774389648 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge..

Ottawa University of Ottawa Pres 1989 0776602772 / 9780776602776 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+
237 pp, oblong (9 1/4" H x 12 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, repro-ductions. "The viceregal residences of the Canadian provinces mirror the idiosyncrasies of their inhabitants, and the tastes and talents of the architects, builders, gardeners, furniture makers and decorators who created them. In 'Ample Mansions' you will see the finest - and sometimes the worst - of Canadian style. There's no shortage of pomp in our viceregal history, but Dr. Hubbard's scholarly and sprightly text goes behind the scenes too, where there's plenty of room for rot and mildew, plugged drains and erratic staff. There are ample mansions crumbling from neglect, ample mansions consumed in conflagrations, ample mansions falling victim to political spats - and ample mansions rising in new splendour." Fine book. Dust jacket has three small areas of minor rubbing on rear panel.

501 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. Inscribed on title page: "For John Watson, / with my very best wishes, / Peter Oliver". "As premier of Ontario from 1923 to 1930, G. Howard Ferguson was the most successful, the most colourful, and perhaps the ablest of Canadian politicians of his time. Largely as a result of his leadership, the Ontario Tories emerged from the debacle of their 1919 defeat to eliminate virtually all political opposition - and launch the Conservative dynasty in Ontario. Peter Oliver's study of Ferguson's life and times provides both a revealing picture of a political professional of driving ambition and rare talent and a commentary on a largely rural society dealing with the challenges of industrialization and urbanization." 186 pp, 9 1/4" H. Maps. "The corvette 'La Vaillante' was built in Bayonne in 1796, four years after the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars. In 1798, she was captured by Captain Sir Edward Pellew, renamed the 'Danae' and given a new young captain, Lord Proby. In March 1800, there was consternation in London when The Times reported the French recapture of the 'Danae' following a mutiny among her crew. Dudley Pope has pieced together the story of the mutiny from British documents and the French naval archives at Brest, where the file is labelled 'Le Diable Lui-meme' - The Devil Himself. How did the French regain possession of their captured corvette? Why did some of Lord Proby's crew risk hanging by staging a mutiny? What happened to the captain after the French took him prisoner? What became of the guilty men? What was the role of the Americans on board the ship? The whole curious story is told by an expert on the naval history of those brutal years." THE EYES OF THE FLEET: A POPULAR HISTORY OF FRIGATES AND FRIGATE CAPTAINS 1793-1815., Price, Anthony.
17 Price, Anthony. THE EYES OF THE FLEET: A POPULAR HISTORY OF FRIGATES AND FRIGATE CAPTAINS 1793-1815.
Hutchinson, London, 1990, first edition.
298 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0091746388 B&w plates. "Frigates, in their classical wooden form, only existed as a class of warship for a century (c1750-1850). As fast scouting cruisers, they were - again in Nelson 's words ' - 'the eyes of the Fleet'. But they were much more than that: as true fighting-ships, lightly-built but heavily-armed, they were also the maids-of-all-work of the British navy, ready for every task short of joining in those great s e t - p i e ce fleet battles which were the preserve of the ships-of-the-line like Nelson's 'Victory'. Yet Nelson's own first command as a fully-fledged captain was of a frigate: for every young officer, command of such a ship was the essential f ir st s te p to wa rds fame and admiral's rank. And in such a ship a young captain could become a millionaire - and even a Jack Tar could win the equivalent of 16 years' pay in an afternoon. (This) is the story of the frigate's evolution and high da ys, to ld la rge ly through the overlapping careers of a succession of some of the most famous - and infamous - frigate captains and set against the 22-year drama of the last of the great 'French Wars'." Slight bump at bottom of spine, very sm all soil ing mar k o n fo re- edge and top of text block. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one tiny edge tear, small line indentation on front panel. Very Good/Very Good

Evans Brothers, London, 1980.
175 pp, large 8vo (9" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0237455161 B&w maps, reproductions. "The war in which the native-born inhabitants of South America wrested control from the Spanish and Portuguese is little known in Britain. Yet, during the nineteenth century, the South American people were helped in their struggle for independence by thousands of British volunteers and mercenaries - the New Conquistadors of this book. In this fascinating account, Jan Read has both outlined the or igins and course of a campaign fought the length and breadth of a continent and drawn a vivid picture of the participants - the swashbuckling and fearless Lord Cochrane; William Brown, the amateur admiral; the embattled William Miller of Peru - a n d of the rank and file of the British and Irish Legions, conned into a desperate overseas adventure with promises of 'flags, banners, glory and riches'." Penguin, London, 1992, 2nd printing.
421 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 01401111646 B&w illustrations. "In this panoramic account of events from the creation of Napoleon's menacing flotilla to Nelson's majestic funeral Schom tells the complete story for the first time. He describes in compelling detail - and usually in the words of contemporaries - Napoleon's coronation, Prime Minister Pitt's robust response to the threat of invasion, the breakneck build-up to battle and the crucial role of Admiral Cornwallis, the 'unob t r u s i v e hero' who ought to rank with Nelson as a national saviour. Trafalgar was a moment of almost unparalleled glory for Britain; this superb piece of historical detection and vivid story-telling does it full justice at last."
