PALLY ARCHIE THE MIDGET CLOWN., Claxton, Patricia and Dooner, Faith.
1 Claxton, Patricia and Dooner, Faith. PALLY ARCHIE THE MIDGET CLOWN.
Routledge and Kegan Paul.
155 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Charming b&w illustrations. "This is the story of an ageless midget clown, of his trials and tribulations and eventual triumphs, told in a series of adventures. His origin is obscure, but his fondness for circus life and his obvious skill as a performer gives a hint as to his probably beginnings...He has a wonderful capacity for friendship and proves himself a reliable and loyal companion. Though mischievouness, at times, gets the upper hand, he never wittingly does any person or animal any harm. By his own merits he achieves his ambition of appearing in print and of being summoned to appear at a command performance. And in spite of his acquired wealth and fame, the encouragment and appreciations of his friends are his greatest rewards." Partial small number stamp on free front endpaper, title page missing, minor edge wear, very light browning to edges of textblock. Dust jacket is clipped, has several small tears and tiny chips, very light browning, light rubbing, light edge wear. Good reading copy only.

TOMIE DEPAOLA: HIS ART & HIS STORIES. (DE PAOLA), Elleman, Barbara. Preface by Trina Schart Hyman.
2 Elleman, Barbara. Preface by Trina Schart Hyman. TOMIE DEPAOLA: HIS ART & HIS STORIES. (DE PAOLA)
New York G.P. Putnam's Sons 1999 0399231293 / 9780399231292 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Tomie dePaola
218 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Tomie dePaola is among the best known, best loved artist-authors creating books for children today. His art and his stories, filled with imagination, humor, elegance, and curiosity, emanate from a love of life reflected in everything he does. Barbara Elleman, a critic in her own right, explores Tomie dePaola as artist and storyteller. The result is this fascinating, highly readable account which looks first at dePaola's life, complete with family photographs, and then at the extraordinary scope of his work - autobiographical picture books, folktales, Christmas themes, religious stories, collections, and more. She explores patterns and motifs that thread through his illustrations from the beginning; discusses major influences on his art; gives a rare glimpse at his fine art and his 'non-book' designs; provides an intriguing step-by-step account of the development of a picture book, 'Big Anthony, His Story', from the original draft of the manuscript to finished art. Ms. Elleman's thoughtful narrative brings a fresh appreciation of this unique artist-author. Tomie dePaola's followers and those discovering him for the first time will find this remarkable volume filled with over 200 illustrations a feast for the eye to be looked at again and again." A few very tiny edge bumps. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

HANCOCK., Hancock, Freddie and Nathan, David.
4 Hancock, Freddie and Nathan, David. HANCOCK.
Kimber, London, 1969.
191 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "(Tony Hancock) led a life fragmented by laughter and despair as he ceaselessly sought an unattainable truth in comedy until it ended in a dreary room in Australia with one final drink, one last handful of pills. But before that happened he created more laughter for more people than any other man of his generation. The search for the truth about this extraordinarily complex clown involves drawing on the memories and perceptions of writers like Alan Simpson and Ray Galton, who, in a sense, hewed the Half Hour Hancock out of the whole man, J.B. Priestley who put him, thinly disguised, into a novel, Phillip Oakes, who wrote him a screenplay, and Denis Norden who w rote material he convulsed audiences with for years. There are, too, the writer/performers like John Osborne, Spike Milligan and Eric Sykes, the comedians who knew him or worked with him like Harry Secombe, Joan Turner, Kenneth Williams and Grah a m Stark; showman Bernard Delfont; actress Sylvia Syms, his radio and television directors Dennis Main Wilson and Duncan Wood and scores of others of lesser fame but crucial importance in Hancock's life." Slight fading at top edge of spine, light w ri n kling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, a few very small closed tears, minor rubbing, slight fading to spine color. CIRCUS TOYS., Tearle, Peggy.
7 Tearle, Peggy. CIRCUS TOYS.
Leicester Dryad. 1952 Soft Cover Good
60 pp + large folded sheet of patterns laid in, 8 7/16" H. B&w photographs, drawings. "A hand-made toy has a particular appeal; if it is not perfect, it will probably have personality - and expert workmanship will make it outstanding, provided always that the design is good. Very few tools are required for toymaking, and the technique is not difficult to pick up. Moreover, the work gets increasingly interesting as experience is gained. The circus theme gives plenty of scope for imagination; trappings and trimmings can be varied endlessly, and the patterns adapted to make new costumes. With slight alterations to the facial expressions, entirely new characters can be introduced. These figures and animals are good as a group, and have therefore been made to scale. As the animals range from five to sixteen inches in height, full directions for enlarging or reducing the patterns have been included." Introduction. Contents: Materials; Ringmaster; Toby Dog; Clown; Seal; Polar Bear; Cossack; Brown Bear; Shetland Pony; Chimpanzee; Horse; Ballerina; Cowboy. Interior - moderate bump to bottom corner of text block, small bump at top corner, large diagonal crease on page 15/16, pocket at rear is torn in several place s but has been archivally taped, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - moderate bump at bottom corner, small light bump at top corner, heavy crease down center of rear cover, very light edge wear, small scuff and small light soiling mark on rear cover. Patterns in pocket are complete but have fold creases and there are a few small tears at fold joints.
