New York G.P. Putnam's Sons 1999 0399231293 / 9780399231292 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Tomie dePaola
218 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Tomie dePaola is among the best known, best loved artist-authors creating books for children today. His art and his stories, filled with imagination, humor, elegance, and curiosity, emanate from a love of life reflected in everything he does. Barbara Elleman, a critic in her own right, explores Tomie dePaola as artist and storyteller. The result is this fascinating, highly readable account which looks first at dePaola's life, complete with family photographs, and then at the extraordinary scope of his work - autobiographical picture books, folktales, Christmas themes, religious stories, collections, and more. She explores patterns and motifs that thread through his illustrations from the beginning; discusses major influences on his art; gives a rare glimpse at his fine art and his 'non-book' designs; provides an intriguing step-by-step account of the development of a picture book, 'Big Anthony, His Story', from the original draft of the manuscript to finished art. Ms. Elleman's thoughtful narrative brings a fresh appreciation of this unique artist-author. Tomie dePaola's followers and those discovering him for the first time will find this remarkable volume filled with over 200 illustrations a feast for the eye to be looked at again and again." A few very tiny edge bumps. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

Philadelphia Triangle Books 1946 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
354 pp, small 8vo (7 5/8" H). Pale orange/buff cloth with black lettering on spine, black lettering and decoration on front board. "Marco was sitting in his chair in the little private beach on rocky Spanish Cape, and he was quite dead. The dashing, handsome despoiler of women seemed to be musing no doubt on the hold he had over the frantic, desperate women in the house above him. For there was a faint smile on his strong and mocking face. But around his neck was an ugly line of red. The really startling thing about Marco's corpse was that he was naked. Under the long opera cloak draped about his virile figure, he was without coat, trousers or shirt - completely nude! Yet of all the people gathered at the house of Walter Godfrey, eccentric millionaire, on remote Spanish Cape, Marco's was the only face that did not wear the tense mask of dread. It was fortunate indeed that Ellery Queen, that amiable maestro of murder, happened to be vacationing nearby. He it is that solves the brutal and baffling case of the murdered philanderer, to the mingled horror and delight of the most hardened reader." Light browning to pages, a few pages with wrinkle at top part of page, minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling and a few tiny tears at top/bottom of spine, minor darkening at top/bottom edges of flaps, protected in a mylar sleeve.

"Alongside the Avro Lancaster, Handley Page's Halifax bore the brunt of 'Bomber' Harris' strategic air offensiv e against Nazi Germany, and over 6,000 were built, running to more than 20 variants. Between 1941 and 1945, Bomber Command's Halifaxes dropped over 227,000 tons of bombs on Axis targets and flew almost 80,000 sorties. In (this book) Brian R a p i e r e xamines the varying roles and theatres of operations in which this most versatile but much-maligned aircraft played its part - from the flak-torn night skies over northwest Europe to the swirling sands of the North American desert; f r om t he b le ak wa tery wastes of the North Atlantic to top-secret 'cloak & dagger' operations. Supported by the lucid recollections of former Halifax crewmen and an impressive selection of photographs and tone profiles, (it) provides a fascin at ing in sig ht int o t h e l ife of this famous bomber and those who flew and died in her."
