LOGISTICS AND THE FAILURE OF THE BRITISH ARMY IN AMERICA, 1775-1783., Bowler, R. Arthur.
2 Bowler, R. Arthur. LOGISTICS AND THE FAILURE OF THE BRITISH ARMY IN AMERICA, 1775-1783.
Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey, (1975).
290 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "....draws on the remarkably complete records of the British government offices concerned with logistics during the Revolutionary War and army service departments such as commissary, quartermaster and barrackmaster generals to provide a full account of the everyday life of the British army and an accurate record of how logistical and administrative problems in America affected the course of the war. His study makes it clear that the British army in America depended almost entirely on Britain for supplies, and that for six years inadequate and sometimes corrupt administration seriously affected the course of operations and the morale of the troops. An organization capable of supplying the army was not developed until 1781, too late to change the outcome of the war." 7 Dunn, Laurence. MERCHANT SHIPS OF THE WORLD 1910-1929 IN COLOR.
New York Macmillan 1975 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Laurence Dunn.
215 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H). "The period covered by (this) volume was one of spectacular development and dramatic contrast. The First World War brought to an end a period of intense competition - competition reflected in a rapid increase in the size of individual liners. Later, during the twenties, a more restrained style emerged, less lavishly appointed and more suited to a less-affluent world. The styles of these two eras, separated by the anonymous, camouflage-conscious years of the war, were quite distinct, the post-war years bringing in a range of new shapes and profiles in funnels and sterns." "A special feature is the 80 pages of color plates by the author, which supply a unique coverage of details such as liveries, funnel marks, and houseflags." Light waviness to edges of text block, light browning to edges of text pages. Dust jacket has light browning at edges, some very light edge wrinkling, very light rubbing, a few tiny dints on panels, two tiny perforations on front flap-fold, several small light liquid marks on bottom inside edge of front panel.

THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN 1776., Gallagher, John J. Foreword by James Dingeman.
8 Gallagher, John J. Foreword by James Dingeman. THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN 1776.
Sarpedon, New York, 1995.
206 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 188511902X B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "It is not often realized that in Brooklyn, New York, for a few tense hours in 1776, the fate of the entire United States hung by a thread. An American defeat, the Battle of Brooklyn has been all but neglected in our collective memory for what it earned with the blood of its participants - honored status as one of history's great battles. Besides being the largest cl ash of the Revolution, in terms of both troops and casualties, the action at Brooklyn (sometimes called 'The Battle of Long Island') brought the fledgling American republic to the brink of disaster. At the height of the fighting, only the va l i a n t s acrifice of one regiment - the Marylanders - staved off a catastrophe. The British army, meanwhile, executed a three-pronged surprise assault with admirable professionalism. The wilds of Brooklyn became a killing ground for the Britis h an d He ss i an troops who were able to begin the war convinced the colonials would not be able to stand against their onslaught of bullets and steel. While a drama of rare instensity on its surface, the Battle of Brooklyn also holds a larger si gn ifi ca nce : t he Ki ng's men did not invade Brooklyn to face other kings' men; they were sent to fight a population. Rules of engagement were uncertain and passions for and against the rebellion ran high. When the smoke cleared at Brooklyn, i n 1 776, th e mo dern ag e of 'democratic warfare' had begun....The Battle of Brooklyn was a victory for the British Empire. But contained within the triumph was a demonstration of the type of American resolve and courage that would eventually r esul t in inde pende nce f or t he Un ited States." Faint cigarette odor. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, tiny tear at top of spine, crease at top edge of rear flap, barcode label on inside of rear panel. Very Good+/Very Good

ISBN 0855242582 "...a combined force of about 17,000 American and French troops under George Washington moved towards Yorktown where the 8,000 strong British and He ssian army was rapidly building up fortifications. Off Yorktown, the French fleet under De Grasse held off an attack by the British navy and thus isolated the British force in the garrison. As Cornwallis was expecting reinforcements from C l i n t o n v ery soon, he withdrew to his inner defences, thus allowing the enemy siege artillery to get within range of his entire postion. Their bombardment was so successful that Cornwallis' situation quickly became desperate and, when no a i d fr om C li nt on ar rived, sued for peace in October 1781. Although the War was not finally concluded until 1783, the surrender of Yorktown marked the twilight of the British in America." 15 Kimber, Stephen. LOYALISTS AND LAYABOUTS. THE RAPID RISE AND FASTER FALL OF SHELBURNE, NOVA SCOTIA: 1783-1792.
Doubleday Canada 2008 038566172X / 9780385661720 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
335 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "The few hundred Loyalists who gathered at Roubalet's Tavern in New York one night in 1782 shared a nightmare of the past and a dream for the future. In the aftermath of the American Revolution, they found themselves abandoned by the king to whom they had promised their loyalty, and unwelcome in the land that had so recently been theirs. On the rocky shores of Roseway Bay on the south coast of Nova Scotia, beside one of the best harbours in the world, they would found a new and improved New York City. It would be cosmopolitan, but more refined, more royal, more loyal and certainly more exclusive than the place they were leaving forever. At first, all seemed to go according to plan. Shelburne, as it was called, quickly became the fourth-largest city in North America. At the time, Nova Scotia Governor John Parr grandly decribed it as 'the most considerable, most flourishing and most expeditious (city) ever -- built in so short a time --'. Within the decade, however, the Loyalists' dream city was well on its way to becoming a ghost town. What went wrong? This extraordinary and yet little-told episode from our nation's past is brought to exciting life. Combining painstaking research and a novelstic flair for narrative, (Kimber) charts Shelburne's 'rapid rise and faster fall' through the intertwined experiences of an eclectic collection of its early settlers, from aristocrats to freed slaves, colonial officers to local entrepreneurs." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few tiny edge bumps to boards. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

MITCHELL: PIONEER OF AIR POWER., Levine, Isaac Don. Foreword by Lt. General D.C. Strother.
17 Levine, Isaac Don. Foreword by Lt. General D.C. Strother. MITCHELL: PIONEER OF AIR POWER.
New York Duell, Sloan and Pearce 1958 Revised Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
420 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "The life of Billy Mitchell epitomizes the story of the development of air power, and the author presents this life against the background of an age that was revolutionized by the rise of the flying machine. Like Teddy Roosevelt, Billy Mitchell was the scion of a dynastic fam-ily, grandson of an empire builder, son of a United States Senator. At eighteen, he enlisted in the Spanish-American War. From that moment on his story belongs to the annals of his age. Mr. Levine has had access to the private files of General Mitchell, to the archives of the Mitchell family, and has also had the co-operation of many of Mitchell's closest friends and associates. The result is a fact-filled chronicle, with astonishing anecdotes, exceptional personal material, unknown pages of aviation lore, a story that brings to light striking facts and dramatic personalities. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Douglas MacArthur, Fiorello LaGuardia, General Arnold, and scores of others appear in new or little-known roles. Mitchell himself cuts a heroic national figure, the indomitable crusader, the pioneer as well as the prophet of air power." Contents: Foreword; Author's Note (New Edition); Father and Son; To the Philippines; From Alaska to Aviation; Musketeer of the Air; Flight to Victory; Blueprint for the Future; Disturber of the Peace; Flying Crusader; "A Bomb was Fired Today"; The Way of an Eagle; Stormy Petrel; What Price Heresy; Judicial Extravaganza; Man Against the Age; Postscript; Mitchell's Own Writings; Index. GHOSTS ALONG THE CUMBERLAND: DEATHLORE IN THE KENTUCKY FOOTHILLS., Montell, William Lynwood.

Knoxville University of Tennessee Press 1975 0870491652 / 9780870491658 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Mike Morse, photographer.
240 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "In the region of southcentral Kentucky known as the Eastern Pennyroyal the lore of death and ghosts endures as a great vestige of the past. Until twentieth-century progress intervened, beliefs and sayings were handed down by word of mouth from one generation to the next. Here, in this area which some longtime residents call the 'Pennyrile', burying one's own dead and recounting stories of their return as ghosts were common practices. But the advance of technology, improved communications, and better roads have slowly urbanized a once agrarian people, and the folk culture of earlier times has been replaced by the ways of life of the current American midstream. Nevertheless it is still possible to find people here who cling to beliefs in the omens of death and the manifestations of the supernatural. Even those who were children of the lean years of the thirties recall with a fondness verging on nostalgia what it was like to sit around the fireplace and listen to parents and grandparents swap ghost tales. In (this book, the author) uses the techniques of the skilled folklorist to capture an almost-gone way of life in the 'Pennyrile', when change rarely occured, when traditional customs were clung to, and when people enjoyed talking about old times and serving as chroniclers of the past to the present. He and his former students have recorded the actual words of these people, letting them literally tell it like it was. In searching out and collecting these lingering oral traditions, in relating them to the culture which produced or nurtured them, and in collating them with persistent items of folk traditions found elsewhere, his work will be a model for similar comparative studies of folk belief systems found in other regions of the country." Contents: Preface; Prologue: The Kentucky Foothills, Where Folk Belief Abounds; Introduction to Omens of Death; Death Beliefs; Death Omen Narratives; Introduction to the Dead; Folk Beliefs Associated with the Dead; Introduction to Ghostlore; Ghost Narratives; Glossary; Selected Bibliography; Index of Collectors; Index of Tale Types and Motifs; General Index.
