Random House, New York, 2007, first edition.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9781400066414 "Here, in his first collection since his three hilarious classics 'Getting Even', 'Without Feathers', and 'Side Effects', Woody Allen has managed to write a book that not only a nswers the most profound questions of human existence but is also the perfect size to place under any short table leg to prevent wobbling. 'I awoke Friday, and because the universe is expanding it took me longer than usual to find my robe,' h e e x p l ains in a piece on physics called 'Strung Out'. In other flights of inspirational sanity we are introduced to a cast of characters only Allen could imagine: Jasper Nutmeat, Flanders Mealworm, and the independent film mogul E. Coli Big g s, j u st t o na me a few. Whether he is writing about art, sex, food, or crime ('Pugh has been a policeman as far back as he can remember. His father was a notorious bank robber, and the only way Pugh could get to spend time with him was to a pp reh end h im' ), he is explosively funny. In 'This Nib for Hire,' a Hollywood bigwig comes across an author's book in a little country store and describes it in a way that aptly captures this magnificent volume: 'Actually,' the producer says, 'I 'd n ever se en a bo ok rema indered in the kindling section before'." THE LITTLE MERMAID., Andersen, Hans Christian. Afterword by Claire Booss.
5 Andersen, Hans Christian. Afterword by Claire Booss. THE LITTLE MERMAID.
Avenel JellyBean Press 1993 0517064952 / 9780517064955 First Printing Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good Charles Santore.
Unpaginated, 11 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, beautifully illustrated in full colour throughout. "This magnificent edition combines the original and authentic story, as it was written by Hans Christian Andersen more than one hundred and fifty years ago, with dazzling illustrations by Charles Santore, in a spectacular vision that is as fresh as it is profoundly moving. Faithful to Andersen's story as it was first published in Denmark in 1837, this classic translation includes all the fascinating episodes in the life of the brave and resourceful child-woman of the sea, who falls in love not only with the handsome prince but also with the idea of becoming a human being. It tells of her courage and steadfastness in pursuing her goals, through pain, hardship, and sacrifice. There have been many translations of this fairy tale, but this edition presents the original story in all its wonder, essentially as it was translated with grace and elegance by Mary Howitt, a correspondent and friend of Andersen, who introduced his work to the English reading public." Book is Near Fine. Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small tear archivally taped at top of rear hinge.

"Credited with seventy-two victories, Canadian ace Billy Bishop ranked fourth among Allied and German aces of World War I. Long out of prin t, this aviation classic has been expanded with new photographs and updated by supplementary material on First World War planes and pilots....(Bishop, who received every British decoration of valor, including the Victoria Cross) was also a sk i l l f u l writer and 'Winged Warfare' vividly recreates those early days - both comic and tragic - when the deadly 'airborne jalopy' was getting its trial run. He describes the dank, slimy and boggy mud that soured him on land combat. And the w ri ti ng c ra ck l es when (he) relives flying his Nieuport Scout, armed with a single Lewis gun. It was in this tiny plane that he dodged the 'Archies' (German anti-aircraft batteries and outfought and outmaneuvered the scarlet-winged Fokkers flo wn by Bar on von Ri ch thofen's formidable squadron. Here, too, are the joys and terrors of daily dogfights, a life of extraordinary contrasts. Complete with a chronology of World War I, Bishop's confirmed victories, airplanes flown by Bishop in Wor ld War I, list s by co untry of Allied and enemy aces, and aircraft specifications and data." OUR INTELLECTUAL STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS / 'ENGLISH-CANADIAN LITERATURE' / 'FRENCH-CANADIAN LITERATURE., Bourinot, John George; Marquis, Thomas Guthrie; Roy, Camille. Introduction by Clara Thomas.
12 Bourinot, John George; Marquis, Thomas Guthrie; Roy, Camille. Introduction by Clara Thomas. OUR INTELLECTUAL STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS / 'ENGLISH-CANADIAN LITERATURE' / 'FRENCH-CANADIAN LITERATURE.
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1973.
489 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), soft cover. "These three works, displaying marked differences in purpose, tone, and effect, are all classics of Canadian literary and cultural criticism. John George Bourinot was a man of letters, an Imperialist, and a bic ulturalist, who was confident of his knowledge of the Canadian identity and felt it to be his public mission to align reality with his own personal vision. Writing in 1893 to the elite represented by the members of the Royal Society, he d e s c r i b e d h is work as 'a monograph on the intellectual development of the Dominion', describing 'the progress of culture in a country still struggling with the difficulties of the material development of half a continent'. Two decades later , Th om as G ut hr ie Ma rquis and Camille Roy wrote what were, in contrast, specialized assignments, contributions to the compendium history, 'Canada and Its Provinces' (1913). Addressing a far larger audience, and treating a vastly enlarged bod y of Can adi an lit era tur e , t heir work comes much closer to contemporary scholarship, with greater clarity, organization, and sheer bulk of information, but with the loss of some of the charm and assurance of Bourinot's wide sweep. In further co ntr ast to B our inot 's d eter mi ned biculturalism and will to unity, Roy and Marquis' essays display vivid differences in the emotional allegiances and convictions of the founding cultures. Marquis starts by asking the question, 'Has Canada a vo ice of h er ow n in lite ratur e dis tin ct f rom that of England?'; Roy treats French-Canadian literature in its Roman Catholic contexts." Interior - one small dog-ear crease, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - l ight to m oderat e bro wning, light brown ing on sp ine and on rear cover, light browning on top of textblock. Very Good-

FIGHTER SQUADRON AT GUADALCANAL., Brand, Max.
13 Brand, Max. FIGHTER SQUADRON AT GUADALCANAL.
Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, 1996.
231 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1557500886 B&w photographs, maps. "(A)fter more than fifty years and a string of fortunate coincidences, Brand's stirring account of the 212th Marine Fighter Squadron's operations at Guadalc anal in 1942 has been set in print. Once of the very first examples of oral history, this treasure trove of personal and historical detail was the result of hundreds of hours of interviews with the pilots and ground crew of the 212th, as wel l a s w i th Marine infantrymen and Navy personnel, conducted soon after the events took place. Stories of thrilling, yet deadly, air-to-air combat are recounted in the words of the men who were there - who also share their innermost thoughts abo ut fe ar , c ou rage, and their resolve to defeat the Japanese. Lost when Brand was killed while covering the Italian campaign for Harper's magazine, this unique and important find wuld never have appeared in print except for a meeting of squadro n v e ter ans a nd the author's daughter. Graced with the poetic spirit and descriptive powers of his well-loved novels, Brand's account deserves a place among the classics of World War II literature for both its literary merit and its rich legac y of p erso nal ins igh ts i nto one of the pivotal campaigns of the Pacific War. In addition to being a revealing and informative historical bonanza, this work serves as a dramatic, inspirational testament to the men of an outstanding squadron wh o tri ump hed u nder dur ess, and to their legendary squadron commander, Lt. Col. Harold (Joe) Bauer, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor." Dust jacket has light rubbing. Very Good+/Very Good+
