1 Ahern, Jerry. BRUTAL CONQUEST. THE SURVIVALIST SERIES #22.
New York Zebra 1991 0821735381 / 9780821735381 First Edition Mass Market Paperback Very Good
254 pp, 6 7/8" H. "World War III left America a toxic wasteland, its proud civilization buried in the poison ruins of nuclear attack. Its spirit all but destroyed, the small tribes of desperate nomads crushed by Soviet conquerors and their troops had little hope for freedom. Until one man dared to challenge the terrible Russian war machine: John Thomas Rourke, ex-CIA Covert Operations Officer, weapons expert and warrior, the ultimate Survivalist. After his brilliant attack on the combined forces of the Soviet and Fascist armies outside of Eden, Rourke and the rebels retreated to relative safety in the lush Rift Valley. Or so they thought. Ruthless mercenaries known as Land Pirates attached them deploying their huge mobile arsenals of mega-particle beam anti-personnel weapons in a bloody surprise raid. Forced to run, Rourke and his troops were surrounded on all sides by hostile armies. The cause of America's freedom seemed doomed forever. But out of the flames of bitter defeat, democracy's greatest warrior ralled to snatch his most decisive victory!" Interior - bookstore stamp on first page, small soft crease at top corner of page 228 to end of book, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - light edge wear, small crease at rear cover corners, small edge crease and a faint sticker mark on front cover, faint crease down spine.

Only one man dares to challenge the enemies of freedom - John Thomas Rourke: ex-CIA Covert Operations Officer, weapons specialist and warrior - the ultimate Survivalist. New forces are at work to destroy democracy in the dark halls of Deitrich Zimmer's headquarters. Obsessed with genetic experiments, the fascist leader holds Rourke's beloved Sarah hostage and threatens to kill her unless the Survivalist agrees to undertake a suicide mission to retrieve Zimmer's ultimate prize: the frozen corpse of Adolf Hitler. Fighting their way across New York's poisonous wastelands, Rourke and his brave commandos must penetrate an ancient mountain complex and do battle with an underground race of high-tech warriors to seize their unholy cargo and stop Zimmer's plan to annihilate America's future forever!" THE CONFLICT OF EUROPEAN AND EASTERN ALGONKIAN CULTURES 1504-1700: A STUDY IN CANADIAN CIVILIZATION., Bailey, Alfred Goldsworthy.
3 Bailey, Alfred Goldsworthy. THE CONFLICT OF EUROPEAN AND EASTERN ALGONKIAN CULTURES 1504-1700: A STUDY IN CANADIAN CIVILIZATION.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1969 802015069 Second Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good
218 pp, 10" H. "This study examines the conflict between the Europeans and the Indians precipitated by the arrival of the French in the New World. The Indians were necessarily affected by the fur trade and the religious and social development of New France, and the meeting of contrary cultures resulted in most cases in the obliteration of that of the Indian. However, a fusion of Indian and European elements sometimes occurred, resulting in the birth of a 'Canadian' culture. First published in 1937, this volume is a reprinting of the original text with the addition of an index and a chapter appraising some of the leading developments of the past few years." Contents: Preface to the First Edition; Reappraisals; The Aboriginal Population; Occasional Contact on the Gulf Coast; Acadia at the Turn of the Century; The Eastern Algonkians and the Balance of Power; The Displacement of Materials; Drunkeness and Regulation; Disease and Treatment; Political Modification, Social Disintegration; The Effect of Contact on the French; Religion; Art, Pictography, and Music; Mythology; Bibliography; Notes; Index. 4 Barbeau, Marius. New Introduction by George Clutesi. THE DOWNFALL OF TEMLAHAM.
Edmonton Hurtig 1973 0888300700 / 9780888300706 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good A.Y. Jackson, Edwin H. Holgate, W. Langdon Kihn, Emily Carr and Annie D. Savage.
253 pp, 7 5/8" H. Colour plates. "First published in 1928 (this) is the work of the distinguished Canadian ethnologist, the late Dr. Marius Barbeau. A prolific writer whose contribution to our knowledge of Indian and French-Canadian folklore, arts and crafts is unsurpassed, Barbeau offers in this book a sympathetic and dramatic portrayal of a vanquished race in conflict with itself. Based on the facts of a serious disturbance among the Indians of the Upper Skeena River in 1886, it is the story of Kamalmuk and Sunbeams, husband and wife, separated by opposing ambitions and the ambivalence of the Indian's attraction to the benefits of the white man's civilization and his revulsion against its excesses. Barbeau weaves into his interpretation of Temlaham, the ritual of authentic tribal customs and the expressive but poetic language of a people in anguish." Faint tiny foxing marks on edges of textblock, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very small glue stain on rear board. Dust jacket is price clipped, slight fading to spine color, very light wear and wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one small tear archivally taped.

A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF AMERICA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 553., Bartholomew, J.G. Revised By Samuel McKee.
6 Bartholomew, J.G. Revised By Samuel McKee. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF AMERICA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 553.
London J.M. Dent & Sons 1930 Revised and Enlarged Edition. Hard Cover Good Very Good
242 pp, 6 13/16" H. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 8 plates depicting coins. "The transformation, bit by bit, of a wilderness into the category of a Europeanized civilization may be comprehended from a series of maps which shows the ever advancing line of settlement as it first gnawed away the forests of the sea coast, and then after trickling through mountain passes, seeped across the plains to be stopped finally by the Pacific Ocean. Waterways, roads, and more recently, the railroads, have contributed to the movement of the past towards the fulfilment of the present. The following maps portray the expanding movements of new nations as two continents were wrested from a wilderness. The coloured maps locate states, towns, waterways, advancing frontiers, routes of travel, population densities, and industries. The black and white maps, besides those showing battle alignments and military campaigns, contain many specimens of early maps with their quaint antiquarian charm." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinage of North and South America" by G.C. Brooke, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in America having a Literary or Historic Interest", "Contributions to the Literature of the United States" and an Index. Book is lightly cocked, light browning to edges of text block, light edge wear, very small old ink mark on bottom of text block, rubbing with slight color loss on covers, cloth is split on hinges - repaired, small edge tear on free front endaper - archivally taped. THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY, Burland, C. A.
9 Burland, C. A. THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY
London Arthur Barker 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
196 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w illustrations. "From the earliest time man has been fascinated by visions and dreams, and by the discovery that there were men who could, by magical powers, improve a crop or foretell the weather. As civilization grew there were demands for knowledge which would give control over other men or protection from the wiles of enemies. The study of magic and counter magic became important in the policy of states. Later magic was denounced as a work of the Devil, and then the Devil himself was demoted to become a laughing stock. Yet even nowadays there exist in the most advanced nations societies devoted to magical practices, who deal in strange rituals, and promote the interests of their membership against all enemies. A careful study shows that there is a good deal of scientific knowledge involved in the vast and complex network of 'magical' practice today. This book sets out to show some of the main lines of influence which have led to the present traditions. It treats the subject as if if were a tapestry of many strands each of which has a line of origin from which it traverses like a weft thread on the warp of universal psychological experience. This book is a short history of a complex development. It is planned as a groundwork from which the interested reader can advance to further detailed studies." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small slight bump at top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear, a few small closed tears, jacket has been laminated for protection and to prevent further deterioration over the center portion (panels, spine and flap-folds).

CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS., Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.)
11 Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.) CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS.
New York W.W. Norton 1977 03930879143 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Chiang Yee.
180 pp, 9 1/2" H. Illustrated throughout with the author's b&w drawings & calligraphy. "In 1933, Chiang Yee, then the governor of a district in China, was forced to leave his homeland after an argument with a warlord. The China he left was an unhealthy country: a weak central government unable to control the power of the warlords; a deteriorating economic condition; a reputation for corruption based on an ill-defined and unsatisfactory land-tax system; widespread illiteracy and famine. In 1975, after an absence of forty-two years, he returned to China. In this book he tells of his travels and records his impressions of the new China as compared to the China he left. In addition, his two grown daughters, who, along with their mother, remained in China, provide another perspective on China's progress. As Mr. Chiang travels through China, he tells of his visits to both well-known and less familiar landmarks; he describes the communes and factories of light industry which have been built in the last twenty-five years. He attends the May First celebration - the important festival of labor. But, above all, he contrasts the backwards country he left with the brand-new independent nation that has been emerging over the last twenty-five years. He points with pride to the accomplishments: 800 million Chinese living and working together in a united spirit; the feeling of peace and prosperity; no unemployment; sufficient food for all; great technical, scientific, and educational advances; increased literacy; universal medicare; and vast improvements in the status of women." Dust jacket is price clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light waviness on front panel, very light browning - mainly at edges, small light stain at top edge of spine, two line indentations across spine, protected in a mylar sleeve.

291 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 074325080X The author's first novel. "From the oldest known court transcripts in history, Egyptologists have long known about the mysterious death of Ramses III, involving intrigue, am bition, greed, and crimes of passion on a huge, though hidden, scale. In (this book), Brad Geagley takes this event - a struggle that nearly brought ancient Egypt to its knees - as the backdrop for a story that is every bit as captivating a s t h e d i stant civilization it resurrects. At the heart of the novel is Semerket, the so-called Clerk of Investigations and Secrets, a detecive half-paralyzed by problems of his own, with a reputation for heavy drinking and tactless behavior t ow a rd s th e g re at, the powerful, and the holy, a kind of Sam Spade of the ancient world, deeply (and dangerously) addicted to the truth. Hard-bitten, deeply flawed, he is retained by the authorities to investigate what is considered an ins ign ifi ca nt mu rde r of an elderly, insignificant Theban priestess. They fail to inform him, however, that they don't expect him to solve the case. In fact, they don't want him to...."
