DEFENDERS OF PAKISTAN., Amin, Mohamed; Quraishy, Masud; Willetts, Duncan; Tetley, Brian.
1 Amin, Mohamed; Quraishy, Masud; Willetts, Duncan; Tetley, Brian. DEFENDERS OF PAKISTAN.
Midland Counties, (Leicester, 1988).
200 pp, 4to (12 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with color photographs. "Few nations in history came into the world so empty-handed as Pakistan. Born at the stroke of midnight on 14 August 1947, it's bounded in the east by India, in the north by China and the Soviet Union and in the west by Afghanistan and in the south-west by Iran. More recently a simmering war - perhaps the most astonishing one of all - goes on at heights of more than 20,000 feet, in the great H imalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges of northern Pakistan. On its North-West Frontier, the Afghans of the Soviet puppet-regime in Kabul raid and harass Pakistan border posts and villages in the Hindu Kush and the mountains of the famous K h y b e r P a ss. They meet indomitable defence. Yet all it had at the start was courage - and the formidable legacy of the martial Muslims of Asia: pride, discipline, efficiency and unquenchable faith. Out of this came inspired performance. Th is i s th e f ul l, remarkable story of the bravest of the brave...the story of how a frail young nation, born amid tumult and bloodshed, threatened on all sides, transformed itself into a major fighting machine." Faint cigarette odor. Dust j ack et has m ino r ru bbi ng, light edge creasing along top edge, tiny tear and light wear at top of spine. VG+/VG

THE EMPIRE IS MARCHING: A STUDY OF THE MILITARY EFFORT OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE 1800-1945., Barclay, Glen St. J.
5 Barclay, Glen St. J. THE EMPIRE IS MARCHING: A STUDY OF THE MILITARY EFFORT OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE 1800-1945.
Weidenfeld & Nicolson, London, 1976, first edition.
276 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297771256 B&w plates. "(A) study of the military strength of Britain and her Empire during the Boer War, First World War and Second World War. Dr Barclay evaluates the contributions of Aus tralia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, and the changing roles played by the colonies during times of crisis. He explains British attitudes to colonial troops - Australian indiscipline and New Zealand thoroughness - and the lack of diplomacy on the part of British military leaders when dealing with their colonial counterparts. After the South Africa War the British government should have seen clearly the advantages of an Empire Military Force, but reports on empire defence from eminen t naval officers such as Fanshawe and Jellicoe were repeatedly ignored. The colonies themselves all reacted differently to the threat of war. Australia was often at odds with New Zealand - the former worried about defending her own vulnerable coa st line, the latter primarily concerned to maintain friendly relationships with Britain; Canada was slow to become involved - but Canadian troops were a stirring sight, well-disciplined fighting men who obeyed their superiors without question; South Af rica made little contribution to the war effort, although her Prime Minister, Jan Smuts, gained great favour with the British Government by always agreeing, in principle, to every new plan put forward by the British. Dr Barclay has written an o utst anding account of the achievements of the British Empire during the late nineteenth and twentieth century, using a vast number of published and unpublished sources." A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633., Bartholomew, J.G.
6 Bartholomew, J.G. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633.
London J.M. Dent & Sons Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
226 pp, 6 7/8" H. No publication date, but an early edition as there is no mention of the First World War. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 10 plates depicting coins. "(T)he present volume deals with the countries of Asia, whose history and geography, and whose possibilities great and grave, are alike reflected in the maps and charts that follow. When Queen Elizabeth (I) granted to certain merchants of London a charter that gave them a roving commission to trade in the East Indies, she could not foresee the immense developments that were to rise from that adventurous commerce between east and west. The successive maps of India with their frontier changes mark the gradual advance of an old world toward the new one knit by powerful mutual ties to the Isle of Britain; and recently we have seen what it is to be hoped will open a greater era for those regions, marked by a return to the old captial of Delhi, and a resuming of ancient rites which first gained their symbolism in those lands. But Asia, as Japan has taught us and as China will undoubtedly teach us again, has her own destiny to bear out, apart from our European interests and politics; and it is in that aspect we need to study her on the lines laid down and made clear and positive in this volume. It is not the military records, the charts of mutinies and battle-fields, interesting as they are, which are alone important; but those showing the conditions, physical and climatic, of the country; the dispersion of the tongues, the sites of the old religions, the wealth and tillage of the earth with its fruits, grain and minerals, its rice fields and tea plantations; the prevalance of rain, sun and trade-winds; and the course of the sea-roads that affect its human and industrial life...In this Asian Atlas, of small dimensions as it requires to be to fit its pocket, Irkutsk in the north, 'far Mandalay', the details of the East and West Indies, the route of Marco Polo, coasts like the Carnatic, towns like Lucknow and Cawnpore, Lhasa, 'the Forbidden City' of Tibet, and Matsuye, the old capital of Idzumo, which Lafcadio Hearn describes, all have their record." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinages of Asia from the Earliest Times to the Present Day" by J. Allan, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in Asia having an Historic Interest" and an Index. Slight fading to spine color, small are of minor color loss on top of text block, very light browning to edges of text block, minor edge wear, small dplit in paper of front inside hinge, browning to pages 110/111 due to laid in newspaper clipping, slight browning to free endpapers - tiny foxing mark on front endpaper. Military and press photographers, propagandists, camera-wielding soldiers and civilians - all took the opportunity to record the tumultuous events of 1939-45. Every major theatre of conflict is covered, from the icy seas of the Arctic C i r c l e to the jungles of the South Pacific, from the deserts of North Africa to the steppes of Russia. CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS., Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.)
15 Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.) CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS.
New York W.W. Norton 1977 03930879143 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Chiang Yee.
180 pp, 9 1/2" H. Illustrated throughout with the author's b&w drawings & calligraphy. "In 1933, Chiang Yee, then the governor of a district in China, was forced to leave his homeland after an argument with a warlord. The China he left was an unhealthy country: a weak central government unable to control the power of the warlords; a deteriorating economic condition; a reputation for corruption based on an ill-defined and unsatisfactory land-tax system; widespread illiteracy and famine. In 1975, after an absence of forty-two years, he returned to China. In this book he tells of his travels and records his impressions of the new China as compared to the China he left. In addition, his two grown daughters, who, along with their mother, remained in China, provide another perspective on China's progress. As Mr. Chiang travels through China, he tells of his visits to both well-known and less familiar landmarks; he describes the communes and factories of light industry which have been built in the last twenty-five years. He attends the May First celebration - the important festival of labor. But, above all, he contrasts the backwards country he left with the brand-new independent nation that has been emerging over the last twenty-five years. He points with pride to the accomplishments: 800 million Chinese living and working together in a united spirit; the feeling of peace and prosperity; no unemployment; sufficient food for all; great technical, scientific, and educational advances; increased literacy; universal medicare; and vast improvements in the status of women." Small faint scuff at top of fore-edge of text block, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light waviness on front panel, very light browning - mainly at edges, small light stain at top edge of spine, two line indentations across spine, protected in a mylar sleeve.

18 Cleveland, Reginald M. Foreword by Lt. Gen. Harold L. George. Contribution by Vice Admiral Emory S. Land. AIR TRANSPORT AT WAR.
New York Harper & Brothers 1946 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Fair
324 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs. Blue cloth with gilt lettering/banding on spine. "Air transport-ation's tremendous role in World War II has been inevitably eclipsed by the more spectacular deeds of fighter and bomber planes. But it is fair to say that combat forces could not have won so swiftly or kept down so successfully the human cost had it not been for the air transport wings - the Air Transport Command and the Naval Air Transport Service. Based on original records, with photographs from official files, this book, for the first time, brings together into an integrated record the almost miraculous achievement in logistics of these services. It reveals how indispensible to their success were the civilian air transport companies of America - the seed corn from which came the huge expansion of the ATC and NATS. The ingenuity, courage and tremendous drive of air transport personnel carried men and vital goods to combat fronts around a flaming world and evacuated the wounded to rear area hospitals and the homeland. (This) is a factual and exciting history of a great patriotic service." Might wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear, one small corner bump, one or two tiny foxing marks on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has heavy edge creasing with tears - mainly at top front edge, is price-clipped, has small piece missing at bottom of spine, light to moderate edge wear, old tape on inside top edge, rubbing, part of small old label on rear panel.
