By reconstructing their legends, myths, folktales and poetry in an immediate and convincing style he has let them speak for themselves. Unpaginated, 11 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, beautifully illustrated in full colour throughout. "This magnificent edition combines the original and authentic story, as it was written by Hans Christian Andersen more than one hundred and fifty years ago, with dazzling illustrations by Charles Santore, in a spectacular vision that is as fresh as it is profoundly moving. Faithful to Andersen's story as it was first published in Denmark in 1837, this classic translation includes all the fascinating episodes in the life of the brave and resourceful child-woman of the sea, who falls in love not only with the handsome prince but also with the idea of becoming a human being. It tells of her courage and steadfastness in pursuing her goals, through pain, hardship, and sacrifice. There have been many translations of this fairy tale, but this edition presents the original story in all its wonder, essentially as it was translated with grace and elegance by Mary Howitt, a correspondent and friend of Andersen, who introduced his work to the English reading public." OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II., Bacque, James.
14 Bacque, James. OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II.
Toronto Stoddart 1989 0773722696 / 9780773722699 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
248 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and drawings. "In the U.S. Army prison camps of western Germany at the end of World War II, almost four million German soldiers were held prisoner outdoors, in barbed-wire enclosures, with little or no food and water, for many months. The French Army, which took some 630,000 prisoners from the Americans to use as reparations labor, starved and mistreated them so badly that likely 250,000 died. In the American camps, at least 750,000 died. Most were soldiers of the Wehrmacht who surrendered on May 8, 1945, but many scores of thousands were women, children and old men. The deaths were simply listed as 'OTHER LOSSES". In painstaking, wide-ranging research, the author has interviewed hundreds of prisoners, guards and army officers and has amassed many thousands of pages of evidence from Army archives in Paris, Koblenz, London, Washington and Ottawa. He was ably assisted by senior U.S. Army historian Col. Ernest F. Fisher. How the public was fooled, the U.S. State Department co-opted, the International Committee of the Red Cross deceived, the press negated, the U.S. Senate neutered, books censored, archives destroyed and senior officials inveigled into the coverup - all this is outlined in a work that destroys the genial myths about Allied war aims and exposes the sources of cynical Cold War propaganda that blamed the Russians for all the deaths among these prisoners." Slight bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light browning at top/bottom edges of flaps, very light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel.

London Charles Knight 1974 0853142319 / 9780853142317 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
223 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions. "British army wives 'on the strength' have campaigned alongside their men since the earliest days of the standing army. They have had to maintain their marriages and some semblance of home life on camps and stations in every quarter of the world, during peace and war. (The author) brings alive for us stories of heroines whose love and loyalty helped resign them to taking second place to the Army in their husband's lives, and enabled them to keep house and bring up children in alien and often dangerous surroundings. She discusses snobberies and superstitions, traditions and taboos, and with wit and humour treats the 'colonels' ladies and Judy O'Gradys' alike. History, anecdote and personal reminiscences are combined in this book, which includes vivid extracts from letters, diaries and memoirs, some of which have not previously been published. Many of the book's illustrations are provided from a unique collection of photographs taken by a pioneer of photography, Henry Wood - Veronica Bamfield's grandfather - in the course of his military career." CHILDREN OF THE BENARES: A WAR CRIME AND ITS VICTIMS., Barker, Ralph.
19 Barker, Ralph. CHILDREN OF THE BENARES: A WAR CRIME AND ITS VICTIMS.
Methuen, London, 1987, first edition.
172 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0413423107 B&w photographs. "When the passenger liner 'City of Benares' sailed from Liverpool on Friday, 13 September 1940 she was carrying 90 evacuee children from the bombed cities of Brit ain, bound under a government-sponsored scheme for a safe haven in Canada. Her sinking by U-boat four days later, without warning, in total disregard of the plight of survivors and in defiance of international law, shocked and horrified the c i v i l i s ed world. Of 406 people on board 256 were lost - including, at first count, 83 of the evacuee children. In Britain and the Commonwealth the reaction was one of righteous indignation, accompanied by an intense desire for retribution. N or w as t he propaganda value neglected, a broadcast by King George VI the day after the news broke being clearly directed at neutral America. 'The world,' he said, 'could have no clearer proof of the wickedness against which we fight than th is fou l d eed '. Su s picions subsequently arose, however, that the British authorities had quite as much to answer for as the Nazis. Parents who, despite many misgivings, had entrusted their children to the scheme when invasion threatened, began to ask que stio ns when t hey learned that the promised naval escort had abandoned the convoy twenty-one hours before the 'Benares' was sunk. Allegations that crew members rushed the boats, that emergency equipment had failed, and that the whol e vo yage had b een u nde rtake n u nder the blight of racial prejudice, demanded a formal investigation. But somehow this was avoided, and the scandal was successfully hushed up. Ralph Barker, after a vivid and poignant reconstruction of the disa ster, turn s his attent ion to wha t re ally happened behind the scenes at the Admiralty and the Ministry of Shipping. The result is a harrowing story of human fallibility and human survival." Light to moderate browning to pages and edges of text block , mino r wrin kling a t to p/botto m of spine.
