1 'BB'. Illustrated by Denys Watkins-Pitchford. LETTERS FROM COMPTON DEVERELL.
Eyre & Spottiswoode, London, 1950, "First Cheap Edition", with 7s. 6d. price on dust jacket flap.
281 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover (green boards with black lettering on spine) in dust jacket. Green, black & white map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "Where is Compton Deverell? It may be anywhere you choose in the English countryside, because ' BB' has drawn a living picture of that sort of delightful old house among fields and woods, the ideal English home which thousands remember from their childhood or hope to have in that future for which they work and plan. The letters are w r i t t e n b y a countryman to a younger friend abroad and they describe the routine of country life throughout the months of the year as it engages an active man with a contemplative mind. They recount the discovery of the small signs of spri ng , th e de li gh t s of summer and long days spent in the open air, and the white beauty of the winter which the townsman hardly knows. Here then is a tranquil book designed for casual reading, calling up the very sights, sounds and smells of th e E ng lis h cou ntr ysi de . It is one of the most intimately observed of 'BB's' books, and one of the most endearing." Minor browning to pages, light browning to edges of textblock, two very small corner bumps. PRAGUE WINTER: A PERSONAL STORY OF REMEMBRANCE AND WAR, 1937-1948., Albright, Madeleine. With Bill Woodward.
2 Albright, Madeleine. With Bill Woodward. PRAGUE WINTER: A PERSONAL STORY OF REMEMBRANCE AND WAR, 1937-1948.
New York Harper 2012 0062030310 / 9780062030313 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
467 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)akes readers from the Bohemian capital's thousand-year-old castle to the bomb shelters of London, from the desolate prison ghetto of Terezin to the highest councils of European and American government. Albright reflects on her discovery of her family's Jewish heritage many decades after the war, on her Czech homeland's tangled history, and on the stark moral choices faced by her parents and their generation. Often relying on eyewitness descrip-tions, she tells the story of how millions of ordinary citizens were ripped from familiar surroundings and forced into new roles as exiled leaders and collaborators, victims and killers. These events of enormous complexity are nevertheless shaped by concepts familair to any growing child: fear, trust, adaptation, the search for identity, the pressure to conform, the quest for independence, and the difference between right and wrong. At once a deeply personal memoir and an incisive work of history, 'Prague Winter' serves as a guide to the future through the lessons of the past - as seen through the eyes of one of the international community's most respected and fascinating figures." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds.

THE BARE FACTS: MY LIFE AS A STRIPPER., Ample, Annie.
3 Ample, Annie. THE BARE FACTS: MY LIFE AS A STRIPPER.
Toronto Key Porter 1988 1550130943 / 9781550130942 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
177 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "She was notorious for taking off her clothes. Movies, magazines and TV shows, and fame as 'the girl with the million dollar chest' after her breasts were insured by Lloyds of London, helped create her very successful career as celebrity stripper, 'Annie Ample'. But behind all the hype was a real person. (Annie) looks back candidly on her turbulent childhood in a small town in California and her showbiz start as a 'go-go' dancer in a local club. 'Annie Ample' was the ingenuous character she devised to exploit the sex industry rather than be exploited by it. Whether she is recalling her narrow escapes from lascivious film producers, her famous plastic surgery, her wild nights with the jet set or the stampede of the paparazzi when she went sunbathing at Cannes, Annie's irrepressible sense of humor and earthy revelations make her story a compelling read, even when it borders on the tragic." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and at top of front flap.

THE YOUNG ARDIZZONE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL FRAGMENT., Ardizzone, Edward.
5 Ardizzone, Edward. THE YOUNG ARDIZZONE: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL FRAGMENT.
London Studio Vista 1970 289797721 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Edward Ardizzone.
144 pp, 10" H. "The story (Ardizzone) tells here is of his own childhood up to the time he started his career as an artist. Evoking a period as well as having a lot of fun remembering, it is fragmentary, charming and very much alive, sometimes because a particular character, escapade or adventure is sharply etched in his memory, sometimes, on the contrary, because the edges are blurred and the episode or person half-forgotten. Like his children's books, there are illustrations on every page, half of them in colour and half in black and white. Many of these drawings (which were all made specially for this book) are among his best work and together with the text they make up a unique 'autobiograpical fragment' - a kind of children's book for grown ups, which the publishers think that a great many children will also enjoy if their parents allow them to read it." Edward Ardizzone "is probably best-known and most-loved for the Tim and Lucy books which he wrote himself as well as illustrated." Bump at top of rear hinge, very light lean to spine. Dust jacket has wrinkling at top of spine and at top edge of front panel, light toning to spine and top of front panel - very light toning elsewhere, light wrinkling at bottom of spine and top/bottom of flap-folds.

New York Harper & Brothers 1958 Hard Cover Very Good Good Ludwig Bemelmans.

Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations throughout text, plus tipped-in colour frontispiece and one other, followed by colour plates. Ludwig Bemelmans was famous for his 'Madeline' books. "A book to delight the spirit as well as the eye, 'My Life in Art' begins with the delectable world of Mr. Bemelmans' childhood on the shore of the Traunsee in Austria. The artist then recounts his misadventures in Paris where, painting meanwhile, he attempts to turn a ramshackle bistro into a smart cafe with the help of a famous restauranteur and a few clochards. It is in Ville d'Avray, in an old ruin converted into a studio, that (he) suffers the initial despairs and frustrations of painting with oils. His success in the medium is attested to by the many color reproductions in this book. The text, with its accompanying drawings, is 'about how and why and where they were painted,' says Mr. Bemelmans." Dust jacket has light browning, a few small edge chips, is price-clipped, one or two small edge tears with creases, light soiling/rubbing, light water stains at top/bottom edge of spine.

NAPOLEON ON NAPOLEON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE EMPEROR., Bonaparte, Napoleon. Edited by Somerset de Chair.
16 Bonaparte, Napoleon. Edited by Somerset de Chair. NAPOLEON ON NAPOLEON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE EMPEROR.
Brockhampton, London, 1998, reprint.
288 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1860198767 B&w and colour illustrations. "During the six years of exile on St Helena, between Waterloo and his death, Napoleon dictated momoirs, notes, letters and battle commentaries to the generals who shared his captivity. He then corrected the material himself. Napoleon used his time in captivity to explain the motives, beliefs and doubts that drove him; to analyse strategies which turned France's Revolution into the French Em pire and examine the tactics that made the Grand Army masters of Europe. He recorded his birth at Ajaccio in 1769, and his genteel but impoverished Corsican childhood. He notes his entry at the age of 10 to the military school in Briennes, a n d h i s own early enthusiasm for the Revolution, which lessened in the face of the Terror...In this book, (the editor) has incorporated much new material from three further volumes of notes and miscellanies dictated by Napoleon at St Helena, i n ad di t io n to the four volumes of Memoirs published in 1823. As before, he has let Napoleon speak in the first person throughout, rather than in the more formal third person of the original text. The result is a fascinating account of Napoleo n' s l ife i n h is ow n words, from his childhood in Corsica to his defeat in Waterloo in 1815. Private concerns, such as feuds with his brothers and divorce from Josephine, are mixed with such matters of state as the rebellion of Toussaint-Louv ert ure and the ret rea t fr om Moscow. Over 90 carefully selected illustrations make this a superbly illustrated, detailed autobiography of one of history's great characters." Fine/Near Fine

London Oxford University Press 1967 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Lynton Lamb.
119 pp, small 8vo (7 7/8" H). The first edition of this title in the Oxford Children's Library series. B&w illustrations by Lynton Lamb, dust jacket design by Glenys Ambrus. Originally published under the title: "L'Enfant et la Riviere". "This is the story of Pascalet and the river that at first filled him with fear and curiosity and later, when he knew it better, became his friend. It ran beyond the flat French fields that surrounded his home, and though he was forbidden to go to the river, once or twice every year the river came to him. It came when the flood waters ran swiftly over the low fields almost to Pascalet's door; but it came more urgently and mysteriously in the shape of Bargabot, the poacher, whose tempting talk of the joys that awaited those who ventured down to the water's edge filled Pascalet with a longing to escape from the monotony of his quiet home and seek for himself the magic beyond the fields. One fine spring day Pascalet's chance came to explore the river. He found there all the dangers his parents had warned him against, and many beautiful things beside, but chief among all he found Gatzo - a boy of his own age - and together they launched a boat and floated away into a world of enchantment: Pascalet dreaming and fearful, Gatzo sharp and practical and brave."
