CHARLES' GIFT: SALUTE TO A MARYLAND HOUSE OF 1650. WITH SIGNED LETTER., Footner, Hulbert. (William Hulbert Footner.)
3 Footner, Hulbert. (William Hulbert Footner.) CHARLES' GIFT: SALUTE TO A MARYLAND HOUSE OF 1650. WITH SIGNED LETTER.
New York Harper & Brothers 1939 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Paul Braun & Arthur Mooney, photography. Inscribed By Author
290 pp, 8 7/8" H. Dark blue cloth spine (with gilt lettering/decoration) and corners, light blue paper-covered boards and endpapers. B&w photographs by Paul Braun, Arthur Mooney and others. Inscribed on half title page: "Norah and Chew Atkins / their book inscribed in / memory of old times by / Hulbert Footner / Jan 22nd 1940". Also included, an autograph letter signed by Footner, on Charlesgift notepaper, referring to a possible visit and mentioning that "For August everything too, is uncertain. I have a lot of theatrical business coming to a head, and it may be necessary for me to be in New York at that time." (Footner uses small x's instead of periods in the text.) The envelope is postmarked Solomons, MD, 1916. During the 1916-17 season, Footner's play "Shirley Kaye" had a reasonably successful run at the Hudson Theatre, New York and the proceeds helped in the restoration of Charles' Gift. Also laid in at front, the previously folded, chipped and wrinkled/creased front panel and flap from the original dust jacket. Hulbert Footner (1879-1944) explored large areas of Northern Canada by canoe in his early years and produced works of fiction and non-fiction based on his experiences. He was also a playwright and in later life, a successful mystery writer, creating such characters as Madame Rosika Storey. This semi-autobiographical book details the purchase and restoration of an historic house, but also looks back into the history of Calvert County and recounts the people and events that played a part in Footner's life for over thirty years. Minor wrinkle at top of spine, light browning and scattered tiny/small foxing marks on edges of text block - mainly on top and top corner, a few small foxing marks on preliminary pages and on the last few blank papes, a few tiny dents on bottom of text block.

318 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0395353149 B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "(A) lively and authoritative account of the United States Navy from Independence throught the War of 1812. During this turbulent period the new American republic fought three wars - declared and undeclared - against the Barbary States, France, and Great Britain. The first two were entirely naval affairs; the third, a combination of military action on land and sea. In each the s u r v i v a l of the young nation was due in large part to the efforts of the navy and the exploits of such men as Stephen Decatur, Isaac Hull, Thomas Truxtun, and Oliver Hazard Perry. William Fowler is a historian with the capacity to convert me ti cu lo us r es ea rch into flowing narrative. Here he fuses political and naval history, looking at political forces in the rapidly expanding U.S. society as well as at naval ordnance, operations, and the fateful and exciting battles at sea. He de als to o w ith th e o ften neglected human aspects of life aboard ship, focusing on those who served in the forecastle as well as the great men on the quarterdeck." BROKE AND THE SHANNON., Padfield, Peter.
10 Padfield, Peter. BROKE AND THE SHANNON.
Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1968, first edition.
246 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, map. " 'Sir, as the 'Chesapeake' appears now ready for sea, I request that you will do me the favor to meet the 'Shannon' with her ship to ship to try the fortune of our respective fla gs.' So began the challenge to equal combat which Captain Philip Broke sent to Captain Lawrence of the United States frigate 'Chesapeake' on 1st June, 1813. The same afternoon Lawrence sailed to meet him; the engagement which resulted is pe r h a p s t he most celebrated single-ship duel in the annals of the Royal Navy. For the challenger, Broke, it was the climax of years of waiting for a chance to distinguish himself, and it succeeded beyond his dreams. In one furious contest the 'S ha nn on ' a ve nged an unbroken list of five American single-ship victories since the start of the war. (The author) tells the story of Broke's life as it led up to this supreme day and vividly describes the action itself as he has discovered i t a fre sh in co nt emp orary documents and survivors' accounts. As far as possible Broke's own words have been used, in letters to his beloved wife as she waited in Suffolk, in journals and in other papers. He emerges as much more than simply a f ight ing sai lor - he was a sensitive man, lover of flowers and the Latin poets, yet a master gunner whose fascination with scientific devices and ideas on training led to the establishment of the first great gunnery school, 'Excellent', a patriot, a te ache r, a lov ing an d be loved husband and father." Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light rubbing, minor wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds - tiny tear at top of spine, minor browning. Very Good+/Very Good

THE EYES OF THE FLEET: A POPULAR HISTORY OF FRIGATES AND FRIGATE CAPTAINS 1793-1815., Price, Anthony.
11 Price, Anthony. THE EYES OF THE FLEET: A POPULAR HISTORY OF FRIGATES AND FRIGATE CAPTAINS 1793-1815.
Hutchinson, London, 1990, first edition.
298 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0091746388 B&w plates. "Frigates, in their classical wooden form, only existed as a class of warship for a century (c1750-1850). As fast scouting cruisers, they were - again in Nelson 's words ' - 'the eyes of the Fleet'. But they were much more than that: as true fighting-ships, lightly-built but heavily-armed, they were also the maids-of-all-work of the British navy, ready for every task short of joining in those great s e t - p i e ce fleet battles which were the preserve of the ships-of-the-line like Nelson's 'Victory'. Yet Nelson's own first command as a fully-fledged captain was of a frigate: for every young officer, command of such a ship was the essential f ir st s te p to wa rds fame and admiral's rank. And in such a ship a young captain could become a millionaire - and even a Jack Tar could win the equivalent of 16 years' pay in an afternoon. (This) is the story of the frigate's evolution and high da ys, to ld la rge ly through the overlapping careers of a succession of some of the most famous - and infamous - frigate captains and set against the 22-year drama of the last of the great 'French Wars'." Slight bump at bottom of spine, very sm all soil ing mar k o n fo re- edge and top of text block. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one tiny edge tear, small line indentation on front panel. Very Good/Very Good

12 Pullen, H.F. (Rear-Admiral Hugh Francis Pullen.) THE SHANNON AND THE CHESAPEAKE.
Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1970 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
174 pp, 10 3/4" H. Endpapers show drawings of the ships and map of battle. Colour frontispiece tipped in. B&w plates, blue & white drawings. "During the War of 1812, a thirteen-minute encounter between the H.M.S. Shannon and the U.S.S. Chesapeake set off a chain of events which electrified Britain and the United States. Here is a definitve account of that confrontation by a rear-admiral who devoted nearly ten years to the research of his subject. (He) carefully sets the encounter in its historical background, examining the causes of the War of 1812, the conditions in the British and American navies, and the actual circumstances which led up to and followed the battle which proved so disastrous for the United States and of great significance to the achievement of British naval pre-eminence through gunnery. This narrative account is minutely detailed and very exciting to read, as the author moves from a long survey to a close examination, paralleled in the time-segments dealt with - ten years before the encounter, right down to the action, minute by minute. Rear-Admiral Pullen has done much original research - determining the constitution of the crews and providing tables of those killed in action. Also in appendix is the ballad which grew out of the action and is still sung in Nova Scotia and the other Maritime provinces." Dust jacket has been price-clipped (clipped price is laid in), edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

BLACK DUCK SPRING., Wright, Bruce S. Illustrated by James G. Teason.
14 Wright, Bruce S. Illustrated by James G. Teason. BLACK DUCK SPRING.
Toronto Clarke, Irwin 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
191 pp, 8vo (8 3/16" H). B&w drawings. "In this captivating and authoritative tale of wildlife in the northeastern section of our continent, Bruce Wright provides a superb account of the exhilarating and dangerous life of one of the greatest game birds in North America: the black duck. Migrating acording to the cycle of the seasons, the large male duck chooses a mate in the spring, competes for her favors, and follows her to her nesting marsh in Labrador or Quebec . There the young ducklings are born, learn to fly, and, in the fall, return south to the area of Chesapeake Bay where the cycle will begin again next spring. A world of wild animals and birds - of walrus and whales, moose and caribou, eagles and hawks, fish and seals, teel and Canada Geese - is evoked in the course of (his) exciting story about the life of a male black duck. But (this) is more than just another animal story; it is a thorough and often eloquent examination of the history of the relation between wildlife and man in this area. It is the story of rare and little known animals such as the whale-killing walrus and the newly discovered fressh-water seals of Ungava, and the story of how some famous species, the Great Auk and the sea mink among them, have become extinct. It is a story of man, the greatest predator, and the ravages he has worked upon wildlife and upon the land itself." Book slightly cocked, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light color fading at bottom corner of front board. Dust jacket has very light edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor soiling, three small edge tears - one with light crease, soft crease at bottom of front panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.
