Where else can you fi nd the fascianting anecdotes, colorful stories and vivid details of battle told by men on the front lines? And see firsthand, the press' outrageous inaccuracy in covering the conflict? Or feel the frustration of Union soldiers who, equipped w i t h s moothbores, marched into battle knowing that rifle-armed Rebs would pick them off like sitting ducks? It's all here, in this unique and invaluable collection of little-known, yet undeniably compelling aspects of America's bloodiest enga g em en t. " Ve ry light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 2 Garrison, Webb. FRIENDLY FIRE IN THE CIVIL WAR; MORE THAN 100 TRUE STORIES OF COMRADE KILLING COMRADE.
Rutledge Hill, Nashville, Tennessee, 1999.
229 pp, 9" H, soft cover. ISBN 1558537368 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans, reproductions. "On May 2, 1863, Stonewall Jackson was on the verge of the greatest victory of his career. Shortly before 10 p.m. he rode through the woods near Chancel lorsville, Virginia, to find where the Federals had established their line. As he returned, his own men, in the noise and confusion, opened fire, wounding Jackson several times. One of the Civil War's first heroes died eight days later. St o n e w a l l Jackson's death is but one example of Confederate killing Confederte or Yankee killing Yankee. No war was as intense and chaotic as the American Civil War. (The author) has brought together Jackson's story and 150 other instances of f ri en dl y fi re in this unique book that strips away the romanticism of the Civil War." DIRECTORY OF THE COUNTY OF PEEL FOR 1873-4., Lynch, John.
8 Lynch, John. DIRECTORY OF THE COUNTY OF PEEL FOR 1873-4.
Mississauga, Ontario Halton-Peel Branch O.G.S. 1998 077799871 Facsimile Edition. Soft cover in spiral Binding Near Fine
141 pp, 9" H. B&w advertisements. Facsimile reprint of the 1874 edition published at the Brampton Progress and Chromatic Printing House. "This book is a compilation of Mr. John Lynch, Brampton, and contains the names of all persons on the assessment rolls for 1873, in the townships and villages in the County. It contains, besides, some exceedingly interesting historical notes of the early settlement of the district of which the present County of Peel was a portion. We read that Yonge street was surveyed in 1796, by Augustus Jones, and a number of extracts from his field-book discover that at that time the population was sparse in that beautiful route. Indeed it seems that in 1799 there were, in the Home District, only two hundred and twenty-four inhabitants. There are also a number of interesting exemplifications from the 'Court Book' of the County of York. We find parties fined for assault and battery during 1799 in amounts varying from 20 (Pounds) to 5 shillings. - On the 30th of December, 1815, Allan McNabb, Jr. had to apologize to the Bench for riding his horse on the foot path, and being pert and insolent to Wm. Chewitt. - The early settlement of the townships in the county is also briefly described." From 'The Globe' of the 6th of April, 1874. There is some blurring to portions of the text, mainly in the early pages but, except in a few cases, it remains legible. Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor corner wear.

A DEVIL AND A GOOD WOMAN, TOO: THE LIVES OF JULIA PETERKIN., Williams, Susan Millar. (Julia Peterkin.)
15 Williams, Susan Millar. (Julia Peterkin.) A DEVIL AND A GOOD WOMAN, TOO: THE LIVES OF JULIA PETERKIN.
Athens, Georgia University of Georgia Press 1997 0820319120 / 9780820319124 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
343 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Julia Peterkin revolutionized American literature by writing seriously about the lives of plain black farming people. In five bold, lyrical books she pushed the bounds of realism to earn the startled praise of such intellecturals and literary artists as W.E.B. Du Bois and Langston Hughes. A plantation mistress who vowed to 'write what is, even if it is unpleasant', she took up writing at the age of forty, produced two best-selling novels, and won a Pulitzer Prize before mysteriously abandoning writing twelve years later. Peterkin's fiction chronicles the collapse of plantation agriculture on the Gullah coast of South Carolina. At the same time her writings are a thinly veiled autobiography of a southern white woman struggling to create something new out of the beauty and sorrow around her. Writing to her mentor H.L. Menckn in 1922, Peterkin declared, 'These black friends of mine live more in one Saturday night than I do in five years. I envy them, and I guess as I cannot be them, I seek satisfaction in trying to record them.' The first full account of Peterkin's life is an exemplary biography of a brilliant, enigmatic women who defied convention, lived as she pleased, and wrorte what she knew." Minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor rubbing, some fading to spine colour (still very legible) and parts of top edge/front flap-fold.
