"Antony Alpers has tried to discard all preconceived ideas and re-enter the world of the Polynesians as it was before Cook's arrival in 1769. By reconstructing their legends, myths, folktales and poetry in an immediate and convincing style he has let them speak for themselves. And in a long introduction that is a masterly compression of the Polynesians' whole way of life he cuts away our illusions and leaves us not only face to face with the islanders but with the way they saw themselves and the jewelled archipelagos in which they lived and sailed." Contains a preface, introduction and note on pronunciation and spelling, followed by groups of legends under the following headings: The Creation; The Heroes; Seven Ages in Thirteen Chants; The Marquesas, and Mangareva; Easter Island; Hawaiian Islands; Tongan Group; Samoa; Atolls and Outliers; New Zealand and the Chathams; 'From Darkness to Light'. These are followed by 'Notes on the Text and Illustrations', 'References' and 'Glossary and Index'. Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 3 Arch, Nigel and Marschner, Joanna. SPLENDOUR AT COURT: DRESSING FOR ROYAL OCCASIONS SINCE 1700.
London Unwin Hyman, London, (1987), Ist edition. 1987 0713526610 / 9780713526615 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 10 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(P)rovides a lively picture of contrasting courtly scenes through the ages. It takes us from the paralysingly formal Court of Queen Anne to the outlandish ostentation of fifty years later when the Prince of Wales's dancing feet twinkled with 30,000 Pounds worth of diamonds attached to his shoe buckles. It conjures up the social butterflies of the Victorian age and a young debutante in the 1920's having difficulty tucking the essential three white feathers into her fashionably bobbed hair style. The fairy tale dresses and gold encrusted uniforms described and illustrated in this book have echoed or defied the fashions of the world right up to the present day. The last debutante to be presented at Court left Buckingham Palace in 1958, but in ceremonies such as the State Opening of Parliament courtly costume and tradition still linger with us." Spine is slightly twisted, minor toning on pastedowns. Dust jacket has light wear at bottom of front flap-fold, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of rear panel, very soft crease down rear panel.

Royal coronation robes are truly spectacular, being made of the finest and richest materials, elaborately embroidered in gold, while the officers of Church and State are arrayed in the full panoply of their ceremonial dress in honour of th e So ve reign. There are many other occasions on which ceremonial robes are regularly worn, and seen and admired by millions. The State Opening of Parliament brings together the Peers and Judges, the Officers of State and t he Bish ops to hear the Queen's Gracious Speech from the Throne. The annual Garter Ceremony at Windsor is an opportunity to see the Queen and other members of the Royal Family in their blue silk velvet Garter robes, accompanied by the Knights of th e Garte r and the Heralds of the College of Arms. At the Lord Chancellor's Breakfast in October, marking the beginning of the legal year, the most senior Judges wear their splendid black and gold gowns - made of black damask elaborately trimmed wit h gold l ace and handmade gold ornaments - and the High Court Judges their scarlet robes trimmed with ermine, as they process with black-gowned barristers between the House of Lords and Westminster Abbey. The annual election of the Lord Mayor of Lo nd on give s rise to a whole series of events at which civic robes are worn, and also sees the gathering together of the members of the livery companies, whose officers wear a great variety of ceremonial dress. In the summer, degree ceremonie s take pl ace all over the country, and an extraordinary number of variations on the basic theme of the academic gown and hood can be seen. (This book) contains a full account of Ede and Ravenscroft's central role in these occasions as makers of robes a nd w igs for three centuries. 7 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." Dust jacket has a few areas of very minor edge wrinkling.

8 Cushing, Frank Hamilton. Edited by Barton Wright. THE MYTHIC WORLD OF THE ZUNI.
Albuquerque University of New Mexico Press 1994 0826313876 / 9780826313874 Second Printing Soft Cover Very Good - Barton Wright.
167 pp, 10" H. B&w illustrations. "First recorded over a hundred years ago by Frank Hamilton Cushing (the first participant observer of a native American Indian population), these tales have remained buried in an 1891 Bureau of American Ethnology report. Barton Wright has collected twenty-five of them, edited them, and provided extensive annotation. He shows how each myth compares to its parallel among other pueblos, glosses native terms, and illustrates each story with excellent scratchboard drawings. Within the Zuni world of myth and legends lies tales of adventure, epic journeys, and tragedy, which relate history, teach moral values, explain ceremonies, and offer amusement as well. Representing just a sampling of what is available in Zuni oral tradition, these twenty-five myths present Zuni thought on the origins of the cosmos, the deities, the earth, and the all important food, corn. They explain social organization, the Kach'ina Cult, and the early wanderings of the Zuni or A'shiwi around the Southwest." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - small bump to bottom corner of front cover - migrates into pages, small crease at top corner of front cover, minor wear at bottom of spine.

253 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 9781550027846 B&w illustrations. 'The secrets of Voodoo, Santeria, and Obeah are among the oldest enigmas in the world. Their roots go back to prehistoric Africa - perhaps even beyond that. From the sixteent h century onwards, the slave trade brough these ancient mysteries to the West, where they blended strangely with traditional Christianity: the ancient African gods became identified with legendary saints. This integration of the two faiths slow l y e volved to form the many varieties of Voodoo, Santeria, and Obeah that are widely practised throughout the world today. Contemporary Voodoo priests, priestesses, magicians, and enchanters use rare herbs and spices as well as charms, dolls, an d ta l is mans to control the natural world in many ways science cannot always explain. Accounts of their inexplicable successes are examined in depth. Sinister accounts of zombiism - reports of the living dead - are also inseparably interwoven th ro ugh ou t V oodoo history. What powers do these old religions still possess?" Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright. Fine

168 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0660103478 Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour. "Indian trade silver is a fascinating and little-known part of our cultural heritage - a product of the interaction between two prof oundly different cultures during the European exploration of North America. Originating in the early diplomatic gifts of medals to friendly Indians, the distribution of silver became widespread during the height of the fur trade, 1760 to 18 2 1 . S i l ver ornaments designed specifically for the fur trade included brooches, gorgets, armbands, legbands, earrings, nose-rings, crosses and headbands. A travelling exhibition of over two hundred of these ornaments was organized by the Nati on al M u se um o f Man, Ottawa, and this book was written to accompany it. Previously known only to scholars and collectors, this unusual art form has now become accessible to a much wider public. The silver ornaments created for the fur trade we re pro du c ed by bot h European and colonial silversmiths, but the Iroquois began to make similar pieces for their people after silver ceased to be available through the fur trade. Although the craft died out, it has recently been revived, and the ex hibi tio n inc lud es m any examples of modern Iroquois workmanship. Some pieces are based on traditional trade-silver patterns, but others are of the silversmiths' own design. The book illustrates and describes all the silver chosen for the e xhib ition fro m muse ums in Ca nada and the United States. Paintings and portraits of the period shows the colourful and unexpected ways the Indians wore their silver jewellery." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 128 pp, 10 1/4" H. Colour and b&w photographs, drawings. "In Ojibway tradition, mothers and grandmothers netted tiny circular cobweb-like charms from willow and sinew. These delicate charms were not meant to last but were intended to protect newborn children from 'everything evil, just as a spider's web catches and holds everything that comes in contact with it'. The beauty of dreamcatchers is reflected in their symmetry and natural accents. For generations, they have been crafted by making a hoop out of fresh wood, and then weaving a web inside the circle of deer sinew or colored thread. The unbroken strand of web/sinew is symbolic of eternity. Good dreams are also helped into the sleeper's dream world by feathers and colored beads that are attached at the bottom of the web. Careful attention is paid to leaving a hole in the middle of the web; if this is neglected, healthy dreams cannot find their way through to the dreamer." "Formed as heavy cavalry for Cromwell's spartan army (The Blues) have soldiered with the same steady qualities for over three centuries. For the c harge of a squadron of the Royal Horse Guards is no light thing: at Dettingen and Warburg, Waterloo and Tel-el-Kebir, many an enemy fell to the heavy cavalry swords. Sir Garnet Wolsely once asked a badly wounded trooper of The Blues what h a d h a p p e n ed to his assailant. 'I cut him in two, Sir,' was the immediate reply. The Blues fought on foot at Abu Klea, where their action in closing the square saved the column but cost them their colonel; used machine guns to deadly effect i n t he G re at W ar ; were the first troops into Brussels in 1944 (something of a race, one leading armoured car was commanded by a steeplechaser, another by a Master of Foxhounds); and even resorted to donkeys in Cyprus.
